I doubt if AI won’t later in future exterminate the human race, call it sci-fi but its reality is panning out for all to see. Imagine this in 2025!!! |

I wish them well. Reverting back to primitive methods will not work. The only solution to this AI boom is to come up with a totally different way of assessing the students. |

musicwriter:Yea, people who don't know about NOUN think it's an easy way to degree. That's why many people drop out after writing 100 level first semester exam 😂. I don't think there's is any university in Nigeria that can have such number of 100 level "drop outs" nothing like sorting, unless if you can bribe the computer in front of you, lol. You'll answer the questions according to how it's written in your course materials, programmed Q/A if you write boy instead of boys, you miss it. You can't even use synonyms, so you have to read their course materials very very well before you can pass their exams. The only thing I think they should work on is the mode of taking their TMA which is their test. |

jrobbins:Ph.D candidates have been orally defending their dissertations in fluid mechanics, abstract algebra and complex number theory for almost as long as mathematics and physics have been in academia. MSc candidates have been orally defending their dissertations in fluid mechanics, abstract algebra and complex number theory for almost as long as mathematics and physics have been in academia. Even Bsc candidates(albeit the more advanced qualifications) have been orally defending their dissertations in fluid mechanics, abstract algebra and complex number theory for almost as long as mathematics and physics have been in academia. People talk up and down about AGI(Artificial general intelligence) and how it will be the downfall of humanity were it to be realized, and under the same breath, assure people that we are nowhere near achieving AGI. Just for those who are not familiar with the concept, AGI is defined as real, actual intelligence, only created artificially. (What is often bandied up and down as A.I. (i.e. ChatGPT, DeepSeek and an alphabet soup of colorful names) today is actually completely devoid of intelligence and essentially does nothing more than imitating a parrot as it were.) So, will humanity eventually invent AGI? My opinion is that even if human societies remain technologically advanced long enough that it will take at least 1000 years before anything that qualifies as a low-level generally intelligent agent is even realized(think levels like dogs or monkeys). The reason why I believe this is that there is a growing body of evidence that seems to suggest that biological brains exploit quantum entanglement in information processing(although studies have largely been restricted to human brains I find it impossible the same wouldn't also hold for lower animals). This would effectively make the human brain a quantum computer, which would also mean that the digital neural networks that all A.I are based on are dead on arrival. Now, to answer my question, I feel that A.G.I is not necessary to bring about the destruction of human civilizations. Just look at what's going on right now with A.I. that doesn't even qualify to be called intelligent. You see, the danger that lurks is the possibility that enough people get to believe that A.I. possesses any kind of real intelligence and starts replacing actual A.G.I. (i.e. experts, professors, people with proven and time-tested intelligence) with cheap code. |

Streamz:I don't think that you understand the meaning of the word "understand". "Artificial Intelligence" is nothing more than a parrot at this stage. It can search the huge information database of cyberspace and come up with answer based on the Markov algorithm that was imprinted it during training but it cannot reason with that information in any way. |

Alusiizizi:While AI uses concepts related to the Markov algorithm in some aspects—such as in probabilistic models and decision processes—it primarily operates through neural networks that mimic the structure and functioning of the human brain, allowing it to learn patterns, adapt to data, and solve complex problems far beyond the scope of traditional algorithms. AI doesn't understand in the real sense of the word like humans do. But AI understands concepts enough to generate answers and engage in intellectual conversations. Modern AI models like GPT-4 can: Recognize complex patterns in language. Generate coherent, relevant, and context-aware responses. Discuss abstract topics like philosophy, math, ethics, etc. |

blamingthedevil:Indeed, AI caused a lot of unintended disruptions in the education ecosystem and the older pen, paper and blue book strategies would suffice for now to bring back the good old times of deep thinking. The rise of artificial intelligence in education is forcing schools and universities to rethink everything from homework policies to how final exams are administered. With tools like ChatGPT now widespread, students can generate essays, solve complex math problems or draft lab reports in seconds, raising urgent questions about what authentic learning looks like in 2025 To fight back, some schools are turning to an unlikely solution: pen and paper. The old-school "blue book," a lined booklet used for handwritten test answers, is staging a comeback, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal. And |

Streamz:"it primarily operates through neural networks that mimic the structure and functioning of the human brain" That's really interesting a statement, considering that no one really knows how the brain actually stores and processes information. Even much more mysterious is how consciousness comes about, there is no neural network, even in the imaginary realm, that can result in the emergence of anything resembling consciousness. That alone strongly indicates that biological brains are much much more than just neural networks. Recognize complex patterns in language. Still falls far short of "understanding". Recognizing patterns is strongly algorithmic, which means that the process can be described by a static complex of rules and in no way suggests understanding of anything. For example, neural networks not only solve protein folding problems faster than humans but even have been used to help create new types of proteins that does not exist anywhere in nature, but protein folding problems are fully algorithmic in nature, point being that something(i.e. humans) had to discover those rules, something that would be impossible for A.I. no matter how many neurons and data you stick into it. Generate coherent, relevant, and context-aware responses. No. Use information that is out there coupled with training on language patterning to present answers that evidently fools many into believing that the respondee(ChatGPT) actually understands what it's writing. Discuss abstract topics like philosophy, math, ethics, etc. Well, if your idea of discussion is parroting freely available information, then sure, why not? |

Bimpe29:This is a great development in the American Education sector. Is this feasible in Nigeria at all? Our case is different because we are just switching from paper-based exams to CBT. However, it will still remain a controversial discourse among the Nigerian education administrators/stakeholders and scholars. #IreO |

Every other subject was a walk by. |

I'm surprised schools are still using handwritten exams! 🤔 Is there a better way to ensure students are genuinely learning? 🤔 |
