Cyberknight:Issue is how long that's sustainable and if they're doing anything differently this time. We had thesame in 2016-2018 ish which was subsequently followed by rampant inflation when the government started printing more money to pay back. This is not even considering wider negative effects on the masses. Local investors were happy at the high rates without considering the wider effects and when the results came, they saw that 20% meant little in the face of 50% devaluation. It was high borrowing rates that forced Trump to reverse on most tarrifs, it was also same that led to the demise of Liz Truss. |

jedisco:Yes, issues still persist but the economy may be turning the corner and there are many early movers in the capital market reaping unreal gains right now. Interest rate will fall and is falling as interest rate falls. There is a lot of negative impact to the socio-economic and security condition in Nigeria due to rapid removal of subsidies and devaluation. This area would likely take much longer to fix. The important thing right now is that there are some green shoots in the Nigerian economy that can blossom into something good if carefully nutured. God bless Nigeria. |

jedisco:Sadly, it seems that this is a recurring theme. The best returns to be had are in government debt, so everyone piles in there. |

Fred2020:I'd be skeptical on the first paragraph especially as regards the debt market. For the equity market, I hope most of the gains feed thru to the actual economy as companies find it easier to raise capital and invest. As for the debt market, if it continues this way, it'd be counterproductive. Typically a good chunk of the gains go to foreign portfolio investors- as they have the data to move in early, buy debt, get their profit, sell and leave before the resultant devaluation takes hold. They then move to the next country. I agree with the last, they are some green shoots (which are long overdue). Time would tell if they would blossom |

Not a fan of the torygraph but there are some uneasy facts here. How can almost 1 in 5 new cars sold be funded by the taxpayer? So when folks incl working migrants are saving money to buy cars, some are gathering their tax-funded benefits to pay a token and then be handed a new BMW every 3 yrs. Not against those who actually need it but let the numbers keep rising, e go reach everybody soon.

Lexusgs430:Depends on who's doing the vilification. Reform rightly point out that the Tories had 14 years in government and didn't adopt the policies they are pushing now and wonder why the Tories have suddenly realised what they should've done. The Red Tories are trying to do something about welfare reform, but their left wingers refused. Instructively the real Tories refused to help the Red Tories pass the last welfare bill in its original form by committing to vote for it so that Starmer could have something to whip his backbenchers into line with and at least effect the cuts he wanted, so effectively for them its still politics as usual - no one really cares about the country. |

Cyberknight:Not one to hold a brief for KB, but I find the whole “you didn’t do anything when you had the chance” spiel tiresome. We can all agree that KB is definitely not RS, LT, BJ, TM, or DC. She’ll lead her party in the direction she sees fit—just like when there’s a change of leadership in an office, from lower levels to CEO. The new person typically likes to put their stamp on things, or sometimes even do a complete 180 on certain topics. So, sorry—as much as I despise KB, she can’t be held accountable for 14 years of Tory failure, even if she was an MP and Cabinet Minister toward the end. (She’s not going to challenge the PM, is she?) What I don’t understand is how she’s still leader of the opposition. Seems RJ & his co-plotters are biding their time we’ll, will probably make a move closer to the general election or even next year after Welsh & Scottish elections? Who knows! |

Jamesclooney:My dear sir, you must be a high-minded individual given your expressed preference for fairness, but life doesn't always work that way. OF COURSE the Tories' opponents will seek to hang every failing of their party around the neck of the incumbent leader and any other person within easy reach of a tar brush, because that is what politics is all about. It matters not whether Badenoch was still a schoolgirl in Nigeria when some things happened; they get chalked up to her party and by extension to her [leadership]. Similarly the Tories and Reform will never let Labour forget the fact that it was under a Labour government that the UK had to take an IMF loan and Labour was in power at the time of the Winter of Discontent. And so forth. Regarding her position, I believe current wisdom has it that the knives will remain sheathed until after May 26 (the devolved nations' elections). In the runup, Badenoch is shapeshifting like all politicians do - this is perfectly normal and comes with the territory. For instance, if you remember Badenoch initially said she wasn't in favour of a cap on migration; the Tories have now come out in favour of one in their mooted Deportation Bill. She may have changed her mind because she convinced herself of its merits or because she wanted to head off Jenrick by stealing his proposed policies, or indeed simply because she wanted to keep him inside the tent pissing out as opposed to the converse. Regardless, despite a desire to give vent to self-loathing anytime she's got anything to say about black people and immigration, I don't think she's doing too badly for an opposition leader. |

Jamesclooney:Because the 1922 Committee's current rules prevent a confidence vote from taking place against a leader within their first year in office. The Committee also recently changed the rules to make it more difficult to trigger a vote by increasing the minimum number of letters required from 15% of the parliamentary party to a third - which means that 41 letters will now be required, rather than 19. After the first year she will likely be pressured to resign, probably without the need of a vote. And then the knife sharpening will restart -the Tories have great form for tiring of and disposing of their leaders, especially when in opposition. |

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c98jl8jnz92o Woman smuggled baby into UK using fake birth story The case, the second the BBC has followed through the Family Court in recent months, reveals what experts say is a worrying trend of babies possibly being brought to the UK unlawfully - some from so-called "baby factories" in Nigeria. 'My babies are always hidden' The woman, who we are calling Susan, is Nigerian, but had been living in England since June 2023, with her husband and children. A careworker with leave to remain in Britain, Susan claimed she was pregnant. But scans and blood tests showed that wasn't true. Instead, they revealed Susan had a tumour, which doctors feared could be cancerous. But she refused treatment. Susan insisted her previous pregnancies had been invisible on scans, telling her employer, "my babies are always hidden". She also claimed she'd been pregnant for up to 30 months with her other children. Susan had travelled to Nigeria in early June 2024, saying she wanted to have her baby there, and then contacted her local hospital in Britain, to say she had given birth. Doctors were concerned and contacted children's services. Arriving back in the UK with the baby girl - who we're calling Eleanor - Susan was stopped and arrested by Sussex Police.... Since 2021 the UK government has restricted adoptions from Nigeria, partly because of "evidence of organised child trafficking" within the country. |

Zahra29:I went back to read the whole article and it’s shocking. The length at which this couple went to fight for this fraud is extraordinary. All their lies falling apart but they keep pushing with more lies. This part of the story got me: When Eleanor is adopted she will have a new identity and British nationality - but she may never know who her real parents are |

Hi all, I’m planning to fly with British Airways and would like to bring homemade frozen soup. Can I pack it in my carry‑on if it’s completely frozen solid, or does it need to go in checked luggage? Thanks in advance for any tips or experiences! |

| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by giselle237: 12:05pm On Jul 16, 2025 |
Lincoln4u:Maybe the grandparents have to die on official papers or the father has to die for this visa to be granted . There was no reason why this visa had to be denied as you provided everything possible but looks like you must still do more unfortunately. You are the child’s mom and have primary responsibility. I don’t know why they want you to be comfortable with your child been brought up by parents. Maybe if the grandparents die then they’ll budge or they both become medically, physically, mentally unfit to care for her…then this could be provided as additional infomation to sway your case. In the meantime, try to secure a document from the courts saying you have sole responsibility even though they claim it can not be granted by courts— still get it from them. Are you on a student visa because it looks like the visa officer is trying to force you to leave the UK to go meet with your child rather than for them to come here? They claim you knew there was a possibility your child would not be able to join you. |
