The Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, has recalled some of his conversations with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari after his retirement, one of which was about President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy while being sworn in as president.

Mr Radda spoke to reporters in Daura at the sidelines of the former president’s burial ceremony. The former president died in the United Kingdom on Sunday at the age of 82.

The governor said that after Mr Buhari left office in 2023 and retired to Daura, Katsina State, he interacted with him more often and benefited from his leadership tutelage and patriotism.

“After he left office in 2023, he spent about two years in Daura, Katsina. In that period, I was fortunate to interact with him more frequently, discussing national issues. He was a jovial person who often made me laugh,” Mr Radda said.

He said his discussion with Mr Buhari revolved around Nigerians’ plights and patriotism.

“He always told me that ‘Your Excellency, go and do your best and be honest as a leader. You cannot satisfy Nigerians; only God can do that.’ He said he suffered a lot, but now he sees himself as a free man with a sense of relief.

“Let me use his words: ‘I pity Bola (President Tinubu) for what he is doing. He is a brave man for removing the fuel subsidy. When I was president, whenever I made an attempt to remove the subsidy, a lot of people would give me too many reasons not to do so. But Bola did it immediately. If he had consulted people, he could not have removed the fuel subsidy now,” Mr Radda recalled a conversation with the late former president.

Mr Radda said that was one of their discussions that he will always remember. He said Mr Buhari’s death has created a vacuum in Katsina State that will be difficult to fill.

Mr Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy on 29 May 2023, the day he succeeded Mr Buhari. He said he decided to do so to grow the economy and promote national development.

He said the Nigerian economy had remained anaemic for decades and taken a dip because of many misalignments that had stunted its growth.

It seems that hating and suppressing the truth is really a curse. Nothing will hide the truth. Na una god talk this one.

Most president will do that kind of strong changes in the second term in office for fear of backlash or electoral loss.

But Jagaban is too strong and resolute and baba no fear any baga.

It's better he had left the fuel subsidy intact. It would stop borrowing but we are borrowing more now. The money saved from subsidy has been claimed to be given to the governors who relooted it. The sufferings and hardship occasioned by subsidy removal are too much compared to the pains payment of subsidy was bringing to Nigeria because since the removal of fuel subsidy all economic indices remains the same and even worse in some quarters, so it was better he allowed subsidy remains. Someone who knows the economy better would have reposition things and still remove the subsidy without much effects on the citizens and the economy

Mind you, even that naira/dollar subsidy then, it’s not like we had the money then, we are also borrowing to pay those subsidy.

We don use almost 5 years of our crude to borrow money in advance. Defending naira alone was costing $11bn in 7month alone.

At some point, if we retain subsidy, it will get to a point that Nigeria economy will collapse patapata. For now we are still saying inflation is high, by that time, you won’t even see money to buy data to complain.

It takes a strong mind with great determination to take such decision.

Removing fuel subsidy is very necessary evil avoided by past presidents.

Has the removal of petrol subsidy subsided the cost of living?
He only blocked the ways of some people who are benefiting from the subsidy and could use the money to create political opposition to him.

Now that he is in the saddle, he hypocritically removed what he fought against. Same thing he did with SoE in Rivers and Electoral integrity

Where are the dividends of subsidy removal? Masses are suffering, standard of leaving sky rocketed. Imaging an egg that cost #20 now #250. And he is still borrowing, no salary increment (only coppers and low income earners)

Fact is, whoever was in charge, even if na Peter OBi, there was nothing that could have been done to retain subsidy. Decades of borrowing to maintain it had caught up with us. IMF was refusing to play ball, and china was nowhere to be found.
