Public raise N26m to help lady repatriate her mother’s body to Nigeria after her hubby killed her in Canada Photo of MSN Reporter MSN Reporter July 16, 20250 2 minutes read Photo Caption Lydia Ogbejiele's late mother. A Canada-based Nigerian lady, Lydia Ogbejiele, has received over 23,000 Canadian dollars (About N26m) from public-spirited individuals to enable her to send home the body of her visiting mother, who was stabbed to death by her husband. Lydia and her hubby, Lucky, relocated to Canada some years back and recently invited Lydia’s mum to come over to assist them with their young children so the couple can focus on work. On July 2, the couple’s life took a turn they will never recover from when Lucky viciously attacked his 63-year-old mother-in-law. It is not clear what happened between Lucky and his mother-in-law before the attack. Lydia was away at work and returned a little after midnight to find Lucky coming out of their apartment in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, dressed in his office uniform. According to her, the moment Lucky saw her, he turned back and followed her back into the apartment. Surprised that he returned, she said she had inquired why he was no longer going to work, and he replied that he had resigned. She said that it came as a surprise to her because they never discussed it. Once inside, he reportedly locked the door after him and produced a knife with which he stabbed her severally, trying to target her stomach and neck. Lydia said she struggled with him and managed to escape from the apartment with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She called the police, who soon arrived and escorted her back into the apartment. They then found that Lucky had absconded and their two little children were unhurt. However, further inspection of the apartment yielded a gory sight inside one of the rooms. Lydia’s mother had been stabbed in multiple places and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Police conducted a search for 36-year-old Lucky around the perimeter of the property with no luck. Lucky Ogbejiele was found 12 hours later in a wooded area of Alder Street with injuries that the police believed were self-inflicted. He was promptly arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment. He is being charged with sundry offences relating to the murder of his mother-in-law and the attempted murder of his wife. Lydia and her sister, Esther Umoru, resorted to opening a GoFundMe account to raise $20,000 to enable them to send the body of their mother back to Nigeria. At the time of filing this report, the sum of 23,753 Canadian dollars has been realised, with more donations still pouring in. Lydia said the visit of her mother, which was supposed to be joyful, had turned into a heartbreaking nightmare that changed their lives forever. She described her mother as a peaceful woman who was full of love and care for everyone. She said her death had shaken their entire family, including her siblings and father, who expected to see her laid to rest where she belongs. Lydia said the costs involved in repatriating her mother’s body are more than she could bear alone. She has also reached out to the Nigerian community in Sudbury, who are also helping her to rally financial support. The association, in a statement on its website, urged everyone who could offer assistance to do so regardless of the amount, adding that any contribution would make a significant difference in helping the family through this difficult journey. Hmmm...do not murder people; do not frustrate a man! |

Even before I got to the part he attacked the wife, I already sensed there was a serious problem between the couple. No person would dare attack a parent-in-law if he or she was not having a problem with the spouse. |

There is a part of the story that has not come to light. There was something not yet stated by the woman. Except of course, if the man has a history of derangement. |

Tokotaya:And you say this because this derangement would provide some sort of justification for the murder that took place? ![]() |

Kobojunkie:Not at all. Just saying this could have happened if the man isn't okay upstairs |

Tokotaya:. People who are not okay upstairs have the responsibility of seeking out the help they need, not stabbing at others in this way. ![]() |

Tokotaya:You don't need to have an history of violence before committing murder. There is always a first time and some just fly off the handle. |

The guy was stupid to do this and no excuse would justify this One person dead, kids traumatised for life Families on both sides ruined Surely our man is going to prison for the rest of his life - murder, attempted murder etc. If your spouse/partner is a problem, get a divorce and move on. Then you can still enjoy your life |

Tokotaya:Whichever our guy is going to spend possibly rest of his life in jail! Sad! Is that why he came to Canada? Violence is not a solution. |

I won't be surprised if he was depressed... Or mentally unstable! Seems like it happened with no prior warning signs. The wife said they didn't discuss his resignation from work earlier. Suggesting they were probably in good terms with no issues. Also the wife described the mother as peaceful or peace loving. Nothing suggests they was any altercations. Just someone getting unhinged. She is lucky to have escaped. These are some of the downside of living abroad. Depression can set in. That's assuming depression is the actual cause of what happened! |

brain54:1. Can you please provide a link to the claims you posted that were made by the wife in this case? ![]() 2. So, in your mind, those in Nigeria don't suffer from depression or psychotic episodes? Really? ![]() |

Kobojunkie:You too like wahala... And violence. I didn't make any claims. What links are you looking for when it's in the post. Did you read it. Or just jumped in to argue? Secondly I might not have worded to convey the point I wanted to make effectively. But people relocating abroad can be super prone to depression, often referred to as "expat depression" 😊. This is because moving to a new country comes with a ton of changes and stressors, like culture shock, language barriers, social isolation, and loss of identity. Research shows that expats are actually at *double the risk* of developing mental health issues, like anxiety and depression, compared to people who stay in their home country! |

brain54:1. You said, "The wife said...," and I want you to provide a reference to the link where you got the claims from. ![]() 2. Are people in Nigeria not equally "super" prone to depression? What evidence do you have of the difference here? ![]() 3. You wish for us to believe that experiencing these changes is more likely to cause depression than remaining in Nigeria, under, in many cases, severely unfavorable conditions? ![]() 4. Can you provide a reference to this research you supposedly quote? ![]() |
