After imposing sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for alleged abuse of power and politically motivated actions, U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that similar measures could be extended to corrupt judges in Nigeria and other countries. The warning was delivered by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who confirmed that Justice Moraes was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act for human rights violations. “@POTUS and @USTreasury have sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program for serious human rights abuses,” Mr Rubio said in a post on social media. Warning judicial officials from Nigeria and other nations of the world, the U.S. Secretary of State said, “Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen—judicial robes cannot protect you.” Magnitsky sanctions are financial and travel restrictions imposed by governments on individuals found guilty of severe human rights violations. The sanctions are named after Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian tax lawyer who exposed government corruption but was imprisoned, tortured, and died in custody in 2009. Mr Rubio’s warning that the United States will pursue corrupt judicial officials globally — including in Nigeria — with Magnitsky sanctions follows the U.S. Department of State’s recent action against Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil. “Today, the United States is sanctioning Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for serious human rights abuse, including arbitrary detention involving flagrant denials of fair trial guarantees and violations of the freedom of expression,” the U.S. Department of State said. It added, “Moraes abused his authority by engaging in a targeted and politically motivated effort designed to silence political critics through the issuance of secret orders compelling online platforms, including U.S. social media companies, to ban the accounts of individuals for posting protected speech.” According to the U.S. government, Justice Moraes further misused his authority by approving unjust pre-trial detentions and suppressing freedom of expression. He has been designated under Executive Order 13818, which expands and enforces the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. https://politicsnigeria.com/trump-govt-vows-to-sanction-corrupt-judges-in-nigeria-other-countries/?utm_source=operamini&utm_medium=feednews&utm_campaign=operamini_feednews

Trump and the US should stop interference... In the internal affairs of other countries. It's not a colony nor an extension of the US territory. Respect country's territorial integrity! |

U.S. as predictable as ever, I am sure it is because President Lula and the Brazilian justice system are dealing with his ally, ex-president Bolsonaro of Brazil and his supporters. Not any different from their declaration of President Maduro of Venezuela wanted because they have not been able to successfully remove him from office despite partly destroying the country with sanctions. |

Madam Kekere-Ekun, we will continue to remind you of the terrible judgement you and other co-justices made in the Imo State guber case, where you elevated a man who came 4th above other candidates and made him Governor, effectively destroying peaceful and welcoming Imo State till this day. That was the day you nailed the coffin of true judicial justice in Nigeria. It will continue to be remembered as a dark heavy spot in justice administration in Nigeria. Forget sovereignty, when you are blatantly corrupt and brazen about it like Wike, by saying 'Heaven will not fall' regardless of what you do..It means you are inviting a higher power to regulate you and your excesses. If that power is a foreign power, then it may be justified.. Power acquired in Nigerian politics and appointment is not absolute and should be challenged when the red lines against ethics, morality and justice administration are crossed. It cannot continue like this. |

brain54:I disagree. Sovereignty does not confer absolute power to do evil against your countrymen. This is a multi-ethnic country, with competing interests. If you don't regulate yourself and your excesses, you are inadvertently inviting other forces to regulate you...justifiably so. |

Dalohad:And U.S is the country to checkmate that for other sovereign countries? R-est, please. Aside sanctions, what else can he do? Even the sanctions would come with a dialogue first(Nobody wakes up to sanction one country without early talks that prolly brokedown) With the way you guys hype USA, one would think they have absolute power like Mongolia, Greece and Roman Empire had in the past, over the rest of the world |

A welcome development, tenet of democracy must be straightened because I don't understand the version of democracy being practiced in this part of the world. where one man will dare you to "go to court heaven will not fall" abuse of court process, money justice etc. Where will a common man now run to? look at what happened in Imo, Rivers and the 2023 general election, even Edo, not to talk about the current and Lawal former SP who never participated in the primaries and yet secured fake judicial justice for sale victory and are now in the senate. Abeg Trump help us save what is left of this country because na vultures dey in power now and they have rooted down everything institution in this country na only skeleton remain. SAD |

A4alpha:Tell us the part of democracy practised in America. You mean a man can cause an insurrection against democracy and still be president? You mean a man who was found on call trying to rig the election by calling the Lieutenant Governor of Georgia - Brad Raffensberger to find 13,000 votes after the results had been collated is practising democracy? You mean a 34 count convicted felon is worthy of an exalted position? You mean a man who cavorted with Jeffrey Epstein, who was stated that he walked into contestants changing rooms during paegents that he hosted with the aim of seeing their uncladness is who should be president? You mean a man whose previous wife died under controversial circumstances (fell down the stairs) and buried her like a chicken on his golf course so he can obtainable tax exemption is who anyone should consider a president? |

Dalohad:Has America regulated it’s own self? A corrupt, fascist country led by a criminal convict on 34 felonies. A country where masked thugs are snatching Actual US citizens off the streets and flying them to El Salvadorian prisons without due process. Do you know that Trump appointed corrupt Supreme Court judges who proceeded to grant him Legal Immunity against all crimes he commits as president? This is the man telling Nigeria about legal system, and you accept it? Really? |

Commentor:Nigerians always accept from white people things they would quickly condemn if done by blacks. Can you imagine if President Tinubu got the Supreme Court to grant him legal immunity from all crimes he commits as president? The entire country would revolt. Can you imagine if Tinubu was a convicted criminal on 34 felony charges, and was still allowed to contest the presidency and win, before serving his sentence? The entire Nigeria would scatter. But it happened in America in broad daylight. Yet Nigerians keep quiet and still worship them.. |
