Deteriorating Child Family Training & Effects On The Society By Obafemi Hamzat by Racoon(op): 9:17am On Aug 04, 2025
There are things that parents do that makes me wonder if they know the implications. In my teaching career, I've come to realize that children who are well brought up produce better results.

What I see these days is training the "butty" (aje butter) way which gets me scared of what will happen in the next 10-15 years.

-I see eight year olds who don't bother to lay their beds.

-I see 10 year olds served by the maid or "caring mum" on the table and they either don't pack the table or they just dump the plates in the kitchen for the maid or "caring mum".

-Drivers carry the bags of children above 5 years and the children call them "my driver".

-Manual cloth washing is gradually been replaced by washing machines yet the maid or "caring mum" will be the one to do the laundry.

-Children wake up and go straight to the TV and sleep late watching TV with mum and dad but mum and dad don't allow them read late.
They'll say "go and sleep".

-I see parents play game for hours on their phones yet wonder why their children don't read and why their results are poor despite investment in expensive schools.

-I see teenagers who can't cook common white rice because there's maid, nanny, cook, "caring mum" etc.

-I see children who are addicted to cheating in exams, assignments, class work and the parents aren't taking conscious steps to correct it, instead some will bribe teachers to make their children first, teach them during external exams or take them to "miracle centres" to write their exams.

-I see children who talk to their parents and other adults disrespectfully and all parents say is "children of nowadays are outspoken".

-Your children's wardrobe is full of clothes but they don't have a single book.

-You buy them lots of toys but you didn't buy them books.

I can go on and on. See, when next you tell your child not to do house chores,
study hard, etc, have it at the back of your mind that what you're saying is "don't take responsibility for your life".

I guess parents don't know that chores and morals are almost directly proportional to academic performance. Haven't you thought of it that when our forefathers went to farm, fetched water, etc, before or after school, the world was a better place?

Haven't you thought of it that our local proverbs which have remained relevant were coined by unlettered men and women?

A Hausa proverb says, "Ka so naka, duniya ta 'ki shi..." favour your son and the world will reject him..." (vice-versa). A Yoruba proverb also says, "eni a nwo ki wooran"... "those who make news don't watch news".

So when you're mentoring your children to be T.V. addicts you should understand what you're grooming them to be.

There are TWO PAINS in life and everyone must suffer one;
-I). PAIN OF DISCIPLINE.
-II). PAIN OF REGRET.

When you're preventing your children from going through pain of discipline, just understand that you're automatically preparing them for pain of regret.

Some parents feel that their children's careers are secured because of their financial stand.
Now, let's do this analysis:
1. You get your children a job.

2. You make them take over your company.

3. You set up a business for them.

I. If you get them a job and they have the wrong attitude at work like being late, talking rudely to clients, etc, which made the company lose a big contract, will they keep them there?

II. They take over your company and your company lost within three months an amount that you didn't make in your first five years in business due to their lack of discipline, will you pat them on the head and say I'm proud of you child?

III. They run the business shabbily and there's nothing to show for it within few years.

The earlier we stopped these
pampering the better. You will give an account to God for them. Train your child in the way he
should go and when he is old, he won't depart from it.

Many parents are guilty of everything said here. Hence they have really failed humanity and God in this sacred responsibility.

Peer pressure, ego, societal influence, wokeness, socio-economic status, and bad emerging trends being tolerated and increasing loss of morality and godlessness are among the bane of this disturbing problem
Re: Deteriorating Child Family Training & Effects On The Society By Obafemi Hamzat by Racoon(op):
I noticed the bad effects of the neglect of effective parenting when I used to attend tutorials in Physics Dept, the Polytechnic Ibadan in the early 1999 when parents of these dull but arrogant and toutish students of ISI where being herded for by-force tutorials by their parents.

My school meet ISI in a science quiz challenge called "Irawo Science Challenge" that use to hold somewhere around Agbowo area of UI.

Sorry to say, those guys were very popous acting as spoilt brats with no social decorum.
Even to greet other participating schools was a difficult thing for them and their chaperones.

To cut a long story short, every school was just praying to be the ones to eliminate ISI. Well, Air force Comprehensive Secondary School, Monathon Iwo Road did in the finals. Then they were really humbled.

Most parents don’t care about the bad impact they make as parents. It’s always someone else’s fault…or their child’s fault for behaving a certain way. There’s no point always expecting things to change because they never will.

Some children don't even know how to greet in the morning because they are not probably brought up that way

the irony of this is that the parents raising these dubious children were raised by Godly families and one wonders what went wrong.
At a time we had fewer religious houses , the society was saner a bit but now that we have at least one religious house in almost every street , its no better.
pastors and imams should also be blamed.

The worst part is that most parents nowadays are ready to pick a brutal fight or give you a decades-long attitude if you call their attention to their kids' misbehaviors or other flaws that are clearly due to bad parenting.

Yes, agreed, that family value is deteriorating due to parents negligence. Also we shouldn't shy away from the effects of politicians encouraging thuggery and agberoism, just for their selfish ends. grin grin grin angry

This is a great piece from the deputy governor. I think more of this can be attributed to the general way of wanting to be more "civilized" , parents don't want to spank again and now they do "time-outs" and "grounding" . My children must not suffer the same way I did so you leave them to rot . I remember when Bovi was proudly talking about how his child broke the TV out of anger and he bought a new one . I weep for the coming generation

Many 21th century parents are finding it difficult to understand that there is a big difference between HOME TRAINING AND ACADEMIC TRAINING.

The home training is the duty of the parent and not of the teacher at school.

How meaningful are these words from someone who claims to be a progressive but steals Lagos trillions budget for employing teachers and other staff to educate every single child free?

It’s commendable when our political leaders take a stand on social and cultural issues. Hamzat has voiced the concerns of many responsible parents, especially parents whose efforts are being undermined by the ripple effects of widespread bad parenting, making it increasingly difficult to raise disciplined and worthy Lagosians.

This is an eye opener for all of us as either parents or guardians.
The rate of social and moral decay in our society in worrisome.
The ball is in our hands to change the narrative and bring forth better future generations that will not be influenced by the non African(western) cultures where they don't believe in disciplinary action on children if they do wrong especially after series of corrections.
The children are looking up to us as parents. hence, the need to be upright and be a guide.

Thank you sir, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

It's nothing like deteriorating. We lived in a new era where informations can no longer be hidden. The children of today react to how they're informed. And how they react is alien to the OGs.
Most OGs were misinformed, unfortunately it could not happen to the new crop of homo sapiens.

Unfortunate thing is that you cannot give what you don't have.
Parents of this generation have lost discipline in the name of civilization and it would be difficult to imbibe one in their children.

Talking about academic poor result, most of this so called parents can not meritorious write and pass examinations without cheating. How would such parents encourage their children to be serious with their education.

Also, government has done some damages to the up bringing of the younger ones; no beating of children policy has made most of the to grow recklessly and no failure policy enshrined into the educational system.

Parents have their blames no doubt, government cannot be exonerated either.

The Idea that Taking a your child to school automatically means the school is responsible for their upbringing in terms of behavior and morals is why most children and parents are where they are.

I say this having been in the educational sector.

Most parents have this idea that the school is supposed to.....

I say this to the young lads.... The first and most important form of education begins right in your home.

Nigeria has the worst set of parent currently.

It so bad you see even adult who can't even think and reason for themselves.....herd mentality everywhere.

Growing up my parents make it compulsory we listen to news every night with them, they will randomly ask current affairs questions and make sure we know what going on even out side the country. What do you have this days, tik tok etc where useless and fake news are drop everyday.

Imagine someone who doesn't know the name of governor of his state or how to even boil rice becoming a parent.

This is a very sensible write-up. I never knew this deputy governor has such a great sense. Even the Holy Scripture says: spare the rod and spoil the child.
The rod here isn't necessarily cane, but disciplining which includes but not limited to morals, inspirations, warnings, word therapy, etc. In fact, it's better a parent read in his kids presence always than to be fiddling with phones. This will encourage the child to do same. Little kids always want to mimick their parents/loved ones.
