the irony of this is that the parents raising these dubious children were raised by Godly families and one wonders what went wrong.
At a time we had fewer religious houses , the society was saner a bit but now that we have at least one religious house in almost every street , its no better.
pastors and imams should also be blamed.

My brother religion leaders are little in all these.. parents spoils these children with the mentality of I don't want my children to suffer the way I did. Not knowing that too much pampering is not helping them.

As Yoruba will says "ile ni ati'nko esho re o de" . Meaning charity begins at home.

God bless for seeing what others didn’t see in his write up, there are few people like you on this forum. None Nigerians will read his write up and think that is the true about an average Nigerian family . 90% of Nigerian children cannot afford the lifestyle depicted in his write up . Why won’t he tell us how poverty is the major cause of moral decay in the society . Children of the poor going to any length to copy and cope with life

If the schools were even allowed to try to help them improve their kids morals, maybe there could have been some impact.

Instead they intimidate the school not to discipline their kids yet they do not do it at home. Most private school teachers have given up on those kids, they just swallow their pride, teach to those who want to listen and go their way, after all their salary is often small.

I say this to the young lads.... The first and most important form of education begins right in your home.

It’s another long break for kids, instead of them to take a leave at work even if it’s for two weeks. Stay home with your kids, know where they need corrections and act accordingly. Instead they will send them to school lessons. They prefer to take leave from work for enjoyment purpose only.

Go to Warri, there's what is called Association of Yahoo Boys Mothers. Growing up in our days, it was the responsibility and duty of the whole village to train and raise a child. Then if you are seen with a 1 naira note bill as a child, someone collects it from you and takes it to your parents to report you. Today, nobody cares. No matter your age, just make so much money, the society begins to respect and hail you. Nobody cares how you make money, just make it anyhow. The rise in ritual killings, banditry and all manner of social ills is the result of these quick money making syndrome. The level of decay and moral deterioration in our society today is alarming such that in 20 years time, we may not have a country safe for habitation, if the trend continues unabated.

The worst is allowing little girls act and dress carelessly.

This is a very sensible write-up. I never knew this deputy governor has such a great sense. Even the Holy Scripture says: spare the rod and spoil the child.
The rod here isn't necessarily cane, but disciplining which includes but not limited to morals, inspirations, warnings, word therapy, etc. In fact, it's better a parent read in his kids presence always than to be fiddling with phones. This will encourage the child to do same. Little kids always want to mimick their parents/loved ones.

The guy is a very intelligent man and the most of his attributes is the humbleness. I jammed this guy for the very first time in 2023 at Paris’ airport. He was sitting at the first class in the plane. The guy was so humble that I had to ask him if he was the deputy governor of Lagos State ?

He said yes and I was like, why would he keep a low profile like this? He was like ‘je je laiye gba’ meaning you must ‘take it easy and strike a balance’. That was the only encounter I had with me.

This is a wonderful piece coming from an affluent parent.

Truth hurts

First thing we learnt to wash was school socks , and mum will wash the bigger clothes later we graduated to uniforms and house clothes mum washes the fancy outing and church clothes and then so on and so forth.

Plates too , you wash yours alone first then graduate to washing few more , then washing pots and all.

You clear where you ate, and clean up as little as 4-5 years even if e no clean very well the child sha cleaned it.take small size broom and packer to clear the rice that you poured on the floor.

Now sef even average families are doing this, dey spoil pikin rotten, can't even clean up after themselves not to talk of making cereal for them selves. And then they raise young adults who can do nothing for themselves and then husbands who can't even boil water, the girls are now forced to learn by fire by force.

Once the parents get it right with children with the help of God they will turn well

I have a former boss who takes his annual leave in August to bond with his children more during the holidays.

This is the background of maladjustment in our society, we have to discipline our children now for a better tomorrow

A German proverb says "Children that are brought up to do nothing become adults that cannot do anything".

A core northerner I am. I had my primary education between Abeoukuta and Lagos. Every morning I woke up, I did my chores (wash the dishes, sweep the house, even fetch water, eat my breakfast and I walk to school. My uncle was very friendly, yet very harsh when I do nonsense. I was commended for doing very well in school, yet I get my own punishment (caining, pick pin, even extra chores) whenever I do wrong. I use to run away from home thinking that my uncle and aunt hated me. I even use to wash my clothes right from primary 3 or 4.

Upon my return to the North, I realised that I'm the most independent among my siblings, had better education than them, more disciplined, more open-minded, smarter, even more responsible.

Till this day I'm always proud of Lagos for everything it gave me during my childhood. Though our school were public, yet we were much better educated than the kids we have here in private primary and secondary schools. I always thank God for the time I spent with my uncle there.

We always forget that even the civilised western societies many Nigerians revere today were once very backward. There was suffering, corruption, wars and many woes. They took their time to transition to where they are today. In my opinion, its a mistake to compare our values to that of many European nations and even think we can adopt everything they have today into our society.

We should take our time and bring our kids up properly. When values of morals and human goodness have spread in the country, there might be very few people to punish, even in schools. Looking at the way we are now, I'd rather say our parents and elders of the 80s, 90s did much better than us today. Crimes were minimal, corruption minimal, education better, economy more functioning.

I noticed the bad effects of the neglect of effective parenting when I used to attend tutorials in Physics Dept, the Polytechnic Ibadan in the early 1999 when parents of these dull but arrogant and toutish students of ISI where being herded for by-force tutorials by their parents.

My school meet ISI in a science quiz challenge called "Irawo Science Challenge" that use to hold somewhere around Agbowo area of UI.

Sorry to say, those guys were very popous acting as spoilt brats with no social decorum.
Even to greet other participating schools was a difficult thing for them and their chaperones.

To cut a long story short, every school was just praying to be the ones to eliminate ISI. Well, Air force Comprehensive Secondary School, Monathon Iwo Road did in the finals. Then they were really humbled.

True ISI kids had inflated ego. They had few real brilliant ones with a lot of financially-privileged academic wannabes

He has been hovering around the corridor of power of Lagos State since 1999.
What has he done so solve some of these problems?

He wrote the above whilst he was fasting or he was just inspired why under his air-conditioned office having eaten a plate of poundo yam or plain pounded yam?

Very true. I hope we can correct this trend and reestablish our moral values but this is also due to poor leadership from the elders and leaders.

Most parents don’t care about the bad impact they make as kids. It’s always someone else’s fault…or their child’s fault for behaving a certain way. There’s no point always expecting things to change because they never will.

What do you expect when people who have no business being parents are literally conned into becoming that? Nigeria is a society where people believe that to be regarded as successful there must be marriage and children and so many follow along without questioning knowing fully well they do not have what it really takes to raise another decent human being.

In your write up sir, you clearly left out the middle class and lower class sir. The three family classes can't raise their kids in the same ways, you were only talking about the bad ways of parenting in the upper class families.
You are quite right about it , but raising kids in the upper classes , most parents that falls in this class are majorly elites in our society, top industrialiasits, business managers , political office holders , decisions makers etc , whom don't really has the time to stay with their kids everyday, thereby they require the services of maids, nanny's, cooks, chefs, personal security personnel, private teachers etc. The upbringing of the children in these class is not to train their children to cook, to wash clothes, to run errands, to lay beds, the children are being trained to handle political offices, industrialist, decisions makers, etc

Family is the first and most crucial institution for child development. Traditionally, parents and extended family members played a key role in instilling moral values, discipline, and social skills in children. However, in recent times, child-family training and early schools have deteriorated, This decline has profound negative effects on society which resulted to our current maladjusted society. Way out

Reviving Moral & Religious Education,
Reinforce values via schools,
Government & Community Support,
Awareness campaigns on child upbringing.


The deterioration of child-family training poses a serious threat to societal stability. Without proper child upbringing, children grow into adults lacking discipline, empathy, and responsibility. To build a better future, families, schools, communities, and governments must collaborate to revive effective child-rearing practices.

Investing in children today ensures a morally upright and prosperous society tomorrow.

I agree with Hamzat write up....but would all these morals still work in the present day that we are, with technology taking over the whole systems, where disrespects the new confidence, where humility is seen as being empty and having nothing to offer, when arrogance is seen as arrogance......lets think about it

The worst part is that most parents nowadays are ready to pick a brutal fight or give you a decades-long attitude if you call their attention to their kids' misbehaviors or other flaws that are clearly due to bad parenting.

It's because it's everyone else's fault that their kids are a certain way. It's never their fault. They can't do wrong and everyone is out to get them.

I don't even know why I am even complaining about this. Most bad parents, regardless of where they came from, won't change. It's your fault for the things that you did that caused them to be bad towards you, everyone is out to get them, everyone is picking on them, and they are just helpless victims of everyone.
