Na human being selfishness be the problem, normally don't give people something in expectation of something, give in appreciation of the relationship you have shared and on your believe that they deserve it as your support. However, this is different from whe someone out rightly asked for loan or help with promise to pay back. So in the absence of promise, please don't give in expectation but in appreciation of what you both shared and on the value you placed on the individual. Ever since I learn this, I have had my peace of mind. I do things for friends but without expectation. Those who remember and say thank you, made me proud, those who forget, didn't disappoint me but themselves.
