Justin Madugu was asked about Ngozi Okobi on the radio just now.

He said that people have a wrong view of female football. He said that people think that it's the younger the better, like in male football, but that's not the way it is.

He said that if you look at other developed nations, their best players are in their 30s, some are even in their 40s. He said that these players still have something to contribute on the field and even off the field.

Therefore, he said that he is not ruling out Ngozi Okobi or any of the other players. He'll select players based on performance.

This statement isn't just problematic, it is also factually wrong. The best teams in the world are in fact getting younger not older. Their best players aren't in their 30s talk more 40s.

It's this type of thinking that makes me wary of the idea of Madugu being coach for the long haul sometimes.

Hannah hampton 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 just went on talk sport and revealed that during the pen shootout she realised Cata had her waterbottle in the goal with the stats for penalties on it. So hannah picked it up and threw it into the crowd and replaced it with her water bottle. When beth went up to take her penalty, hannah saw cata looking around for her water bottle which obviously was nowhere to be found. Hannah said she was trying really hard not to laugh when she saw cata looking for it 😭😭

It's always like whenever this people interested in switching they always employ a professional to write out this request speech of calling out to the national team and appealing to the fans empathy.

And as fans we are always ready and happy to give them an opportunity if they are good enough.

Anyways who needs a writer ??

Actually, that shouting and directing play from the touchline is a thing our coaches picked up from the grassroots. Hardly will you see any coach at that level who doesn't do it.

Nigerian pendulum.

Does shouting matter?

Nigeria got to the finals of multiple African Nations Cup competitions and FIFA world junior championships in the 1980s. I remember that one of the things that people always said when things were going wrong (players making mistakes at the early stages of the game, etc.) was, "Why is the coach just sitting down? Instead of him to shout on them".

People had the belief that these players might not concentrate or understand how important the task was at the early stages of the match and they believed that the coach needed to shout at the players to keep their minds on the game.

A very famous and more recent example was the case of Chief Adegboye Onigbinde. Chief Onigbinde is one of the most experienced indigenous coaches that we have ever had. He coached Nigeria to the final of the 1984 Nations Cup and he has been a member of FIFA's technical committee. He was brought back to coach the team in 2002 after we had problems at the 2002 Nations Cup.

Nigerians could not understand Chief Onigbinde's quiet nature. They couldn't understand why he just sat on the bench instead of shouting at the players. Indeed the biggest criticism of him was not about his tactics, it was about the fact that he sat quietly on the bench while the team played.

Chief Onigbinde said that he didn't believe that there was any need to shout. He said that he had already given instructions to the players in the dressing room and they knew what to do. Besides, he said that the noise in the stadium would not allow the boys to hear whateve he decided to shout. Therefore he saw no need to shout at the players during games.

Nigerians did not accept that explanation.

However, probably due to the influence of European football, some Nigerian fans are beginning to criticise Nigerian coaches that shout at players during games. Funny enough, some of the present critics use the exact opposite of the 1980s critics, while others agree with Chief Onigbinde's thinking.

Some fans believe that shouting at players during games distracts them (remember, the 1980s critics believed that it helped players to concentrate). Others believe (as Chief Onigbinde did) that there's no need to shout at players if you gave them proper instructions in the dressing room.

Alozie was never in his plan. His team had visa issues, and fortunately we had a lot of Nigerians in the US then. Tosin and Deborah are from age grade team. Ifeoma has never really settle or impress, especially to the standard we expected.

BTW, what was the use of using 5 years to assemble players when you didn't win a spoon with them?
