Niger State Signs $100 Million Livestock Export Deal With Saudi Arabia by TimeManager(op): 6:47pm On Aug 20, 2025
The Niger State Government has agreed to a deal with the government of Saudi Arabia to export livestock worth about $100 million dollars according to the state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, on Tuesday at the Firstbank Agric and Expo 2025.

This signals a positive trend in the government’s non-oil export from the country, and under the deal agreement, the first tranche begins with a $10 million payment to the Niger State government by the Saudi authorities.

The development is aimed at stimulating the economy of Niger state and also making the state a strategic player in the livestock supply chain.

Governor Bago said, “This is incredible. The Saudi government has given us an offtake agreement for $100 million. They’ve asked the Nigerian Export and Import Bank (NEXIM) to come in, and we’re starting with the first $10 million.”

This development comes against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical and environmental disruptions in the Sahel and Sudan, which have created urgent demand for livestock across the Middle East.

Bago explained that this is a $2.5 billion annual opportunity, as Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries seek stable, high-volume sources for meat and animal by-products.

He said, “This is not just about meat. The tripe, blood, skin, hooves, every part of the animal has value. We’re building the entire ecosystem.”

In his remarks, Olusegun Alebiosu, Firstbank CEO, explained that as a nation, Nigeria finds itself at a pivotal moment in its economic journey, one that demands bold diversification beyond oil and the harnessing of the vast opportunities in our non-oil sectors.

He said, “Today, agriculture, once overlooked, is rightfully at the heart of our national development agenda.”

Alebiosu, during the event, renamed FirstBank Agric & Export Expo, which reflects the bank’s renewed and unwavering commitment to positioning non-oil exports as a transformative force in Nigeria’s economy.

Meanwhile when Tinubu was creating the Livestock Ministry, members of opposition with limited understanding and stunted foresights were kicking, calling it a waste, propaganda, etc. But look at it now, barely a year, things are shaping up. Look how excited the Governor sounded. How many Governors have been given enabling environment to earn foreign exchange since 1999?. Look how Governors across the states, regions and political parties are executing different kinds of projects under the leadership of Jagaban. And if these Governors completed a project and named it after Tinubu, you will be on your keyboard kicking. Renewed Hope till 2031.

When we do not have enough livestock to go round In This country......meat is a very good source of protein but we are getting short on it and someone his planning on exporting.

Meat is extremely expensive especially in the south and I still don't understand why, this cows eat free range grass and water......I get extremely angry when I hear the ridiculous amounts people are having to buy meat......I have long sort preference in fish and eggs......a crate of eggs cost 6k for 30 pcs and would take a family of 4 2 to 3 weeks to consume but 6k meat won't last 3 days.

It is not good news

We need to understand world geopolitical dynamics

We will not eat dollars we need to feed ourselves before we export any food

Rich countries make a strategic decision to outsource food production to poor countries effectively using their land and people as cheap labour to produce food they cannot produce

That is why we need national cohesion
States should work with the federal government to understand national strategic interests
No food exports whilst we are going hungry

Same Niger state Governor said he would join Tinubu in Brazil on Friday because out of the $2B+ coming from Brazil through livestock investment, over $1B is coming to his state. Yet the North that supposed to worship this president is clamouring for power as if they have been able to do more than him in their over 40 years of ruling Nigeria. The northern Governors have a very good opportunity through this livestock production and export opportunities. See how a president from South is going everywhere to make sure that northern Governors gets FDI. This week again Air Peace will get the approval to fly directly to Brazil once Tinubu sign the contract yet Obi is angry that Tinubu is traveling to Brazil. Two major deals from Brazil alone. Can someone open a 4x4; shop for Obi at Aba please

My question to Muslims despite your investment in Hajj is this the best Saudi can do
How come Saudis prefer to invest in America
They hardly invest in Muslim countries on a similar scale
The only major investment they have for you is mosques)

Beautiful news filtering in from Niger state since morning.

By the way, whatever happened to the Obudu cattle ranch in Cross River state?

Are they not supposed to be leading the way in investments, tourism, livestock R&grin and everything else that has to do with cattle?

One wonders how many of such establishments have been left in total disrepair while still drawing management and maintenance funds from the government.

E no good ra ra.

There is enough? How much exactly how many animals any data or figures?

E.g I can tell you there are 238 million cows in Brazil

With respect your question is funny
Economic activity should improve the lives of the people
What that means is high production will increase supply reduce prices and increase purchasing power
Now minimum wage for a month can hardly buy a goat
Compare to middle income countries where you could buy it with minimum wage working 2 or 3 days

So it is about purchasing power and devaluation of our currency

If we boost production will all our resources and advantages we should have a higher population of goats than humans
