jedisco:From the same immigrants who are a burden and spoiling the country 😂 funny how any leader won’t see this as a factor or cause of future inflation |

Lexusgs430:Honestly my change in stance is not based on pressure but from having done a lot of thinking. Of course my decision will still depend on how mad they run with their fortnight changes on immigration policies so I'm approaching it cautiously. Very cautiously. |

Goke7:Fair point.. after interracting with many, I've come to see that it's mainly for Africans that travel is made to seem as a privilege. Sadly, we're also accepting it. When I speak to Brits who have holiday homes in Spain or planning on a working break in Australia, they see it as a right. You sense the air of entitlement in their voice. Canada, Aussie, NZ, U.S are populated with folks of European heritage yet some Africans in this day and age still see travel as a privilege. I might excuse some folks in 9ja but those whove moved out should know better. |

Lexusgs430:Hehe...pity landlords. U sef na one. Finally na selfless service. One group is providing housing, the other is supporting their landlords retirement abi mortgage. My landlady dey sometimes look me as her retirement benefit... she no dey take eye see my rent. Once its past 8am the day before its due, she go dey jittery. She's retired and doesn't look like she has much in terms of income aside statutory stuff and her additional pension (i.e tenant). All said, housing is good. Always found it odd when folks say their plan is to use house A for retirement. Inside life... |

Keir Starmer's net approval rating has plummeted to -44, compared to Farage at -29 and Badenoch at -31...and rumours are beginning to swirl that Rayner is being lined up to replace him 🙈 And this is before the Autumn budget which is expected to usher in tax rises , and rife speculations on a new Property Tax on properties worth over £500k ( which will impact the average family home in London and the south east). Tax reforms are needed in the housing sector but If not handled extremely carefully, these new taxes could destroy the Labour Party in the same way the poll tax brought down Thatcher's government. Choppy waters ahead... https://www.theguardian.com/money/2025/aug/18/rachel-reeves-stamp-duty-property-tax-council-tax |

Zahra29:To give Starmer his due, he did make an attempt with the WFA and the Welfare Reform Bill, but those failed. So unfortunately, the government already seems to be drifting just a year into its term. They're already where the Tories were when they threw in the towel last year. The UK is seriously in need of restructuring, reform, whatever, but just like the previous governments, there's no political will to do anything other than tinker around the edges. The raid on businesses in the form of the NI increase was ill-conceived - everyone with half a brain could see that it would dampen employment. The best thing to have done would have been to swallow the ridiculous pledge they made and either distributed the burden equally between employers and employees or at least taken employee NI back to where it was before Jeremy Hunt reduced it before the election. That would have been easier to spin. I don't think Big Ange can make any difference to Labour's woes, especially as the Labour left is not really seen as a viable government. They won't be able to shake of the tax and spend label, given that when they gutted the Welfare Reform Bill they were clearly out of step with Middle England as it's almost a consensus that something needs to be done to cut those outgoings. No progress has been made with reforming planning rules, and the inevitable tax rises will be fiercely hated as everyone sees it as money thrown into the pockets of what Labour thinks are its voters. A tax on sales of property above 500k will gum up that market segment somewhat and will generally end up entrenching the slowly growing class divide in London and the Home Counties (the French like to make fun of London as the museum city - saying that not only does it have more museums than Paris, but it is becoming a museum itself where the only the rich can afford to live while the less well off travel in to look around the city only as visitors and stare at those who live there). The tax will be passed on to buyers and further reduce the pool of people who can afford housing in the south east and so on. All in all Labour has few easy choices to make (I foresee the axe descending on immigrants (or rather non-British time-limited residents) again), but they'd better do something otherwise they'll be knocking on the IMF's door sooner rather than later. |

Gurus in the house please i need guidance regarding my insurance policy issue, i know this might not be the right thread however its still boils down to investment. Five years ago, I subscribed to the Flex Edu Insurance Policy with First Bank Insurance for my daughter’s education, which was due to mature this year. Along the way, the policy management was moved to Sanlam Nigeria (a partner company, as I was informed). Despite the transition, everything seemed smooth until recently. A few weeks before the maturity date, I contacted the company to confirm that all was in order. They responded promptly, acknowledged the upcoming maturity, and provided me with a statement of account. (Also note I had exchange several mails before and they responded swiftly) Five days before maturity, I was forwarded a form & asked to complete a payment voucher for the full benefit. However, it has now been several weeks since maturity, and I am yet to receive any payment. To make matters worse, I even noticed an over-debit on my account, which I raised with the company, but my emails have since gone unanswered. I have sent multiple follow-ups to every contact I have, including those I previously engaged with, but there has been no response. Currently, I can no longer access my account online, which raises even more concern. After diligently saving monthly for five years for my daughter’s education, I feel deeply frustrated and disappointed by this experience. I kindly seek your advice on how best to call out these people? How I can recover my funds after years of committed savings. Is First Bank Insurance is still directly involved in this matter? and What formal steps I can take to escalate this issue if Sanlam Nigeria continues to be unresponsive This situation feels unfair and distressing, and I would appreciate any support, guidance, or escalation channels you can provide to help resolve it. I will appreciate every single help I could get on here Thanks |

Cyberknight:Great analysis as per usual 👍🏾 One choice they can make and it’s relatively easy imho is actually STOP THE BOATS and deport those in hotels/stop funding them! Just borrow some of Trump’s harsh methods and the illegal migrants will get the point and stop coming altogether. Once KS manages that, he’ll steal the thunder from Reform/Online Right and legal migrants will support this as well. It’s a no brainer for me. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Goke7: 7:46am On Aug 22, 2025 |
Jamesclooney:Nobody will stop any boats it’s the legal migrants that will continue to bear the brunt, know this and know peace. Once there is more pressure expect salary thresholds to go up again or more occupations struck off the skilled workers list; that’s all KS has to offer |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Jamesclooney: 8:24am On Aug 22, 2025 |
Goke7:Then he should be ready to lose power to Nigel in 2029 (or Rayner n co even before the general election). Sometimes I don’t know how dumb politicians can be. Voters are literally telling you their issues and you’re forming you know better/refusing to give them what they want, when Trump has shown you the example and you’re losing support left, right and centre. They should go ahead and commit political suicide then, no one’s holding them. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Goke7: 9:05am On Aug 22, 2025 |
Jamesclooney:Even the Nigel making mouth will not stop any boats either, the Torries couldn’t, Labour can’t so what will Nigel do that will be different? It’s all gimmicks to win elections that’s all and when they get in power they look for the quickest or easiest vulnerable people living in the uk to pounce on. From Theresa May that’s has been the plot, international students, windrush generation, eastern europeans(Brexit), Muslims, Arabs and other minorities in the uk they can easily show power on to please their people! |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 10:20am On Aug 22, 2025 |
Cyberknight:💯 I feel a bit sorry for Starmer - a lot of these issues, including much of the nation's impatience and anger, were inherited.....however you can't promise bold change and then 1 year on it largely feels like much of the same. Where are the radical, well-thought out policies or ideas? Replacing him with Rayner will make the situation worse because it will send out the message that the government is in crisis and will almost certainly mark the beginning of the end, just as when Brown replaced Blair. At the moment it feels like Labour are not pleasing anyone. Most people expected that they would go after corporations and the very wealthy, but in reality that's not easy for various reasons, and so it's the middle class, disabled etc that's feeling the brunt of tax rises, property taxes, welfare reforms etc leaving traditional Labour supporters disillusioned and angry. Corbyn is now standing up his breakaway left wing party which will only compound Labour's issues. The asylum seeker issue is an intractable one due to courts and human rights; however in the short term, the government probably needs to look into rehousing them from HMOs and hotels and into purpose built centres such as disused military camps - otherwise public anger will continue to grow, especially when juxtaposed against images of Brits who are homeless or on waiting lists. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by justwise(mod): 10:27am On Aug 22, 2025 |
Jamesclooney:KS should not even think about it else labour party will be gone by next general election. What Trump is doing can only work in a lawless country like US. The British justice system will not even allow the govt to do what Trump is doing. Stop the boat YES but the moment they get into the country they should be treated with some level of dignity. If KS decided to do that then expect the economy to tank and everyone of us will 'collect'. Ask Americans farmers and construction companies how Trump immigration policy is benefiting them. |

Lincoln4u:What’s the new policy?? |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 10:36am On Aug 22, 2025 |
justwise:They need to introduce a regularisation scheme for existing illegal workers e.g. those with no criminal record, those who have lived X years in the US etc - even if it's a temporary visa like we have here, with no direct route to settlement. At least the workers will be able to work without fear and exploitation - unfortunately many are paid below minimum wage, no insurance or employment rights etc. |
