Hello Guys,
Please, I need advice on which option is better:

🔹 Option 1: Master of Engineering (MEng)
Duration: ~12 months (can even be completed earlier since it’s charged per credit)
Requirement: 8 courses (0.5 credit each = 4 credits total)
Cost: $35,750 CAD

🔹 Option 2: 2-Year Diploma
Duration: 24 months
Cost: $14,580 CAD per year = $29,000 CAD total

Both programs are full-time.

One more question: Is it advisable to rush the MEng and finish within 8 months, hope it won't affect my PGWP eligibility?

I have 2 possible plans:

1. Register for 2 credit units in Winter 2026 and the last 2 credit units in Summer 2026 (finishing in 8 months).
2. Register for 2 credit units in Winter 2026 and the last 2 credit units in Fall 2026 (finishing in 12 months).

In your opinion, which is more advisable: the 12-month Master’s program or the 2-year Diploma program?
And if it’s the MEng, should I spread it over 12 months or fast-track it in 8 months?

Thanks in advance for your input 🙏

While some Vos, based on how you present the application, may accept the scholarship as proof of funds, others may not be as lenient. Although these scholarships are available, they are sometimes accessible only when specific requirements are met. Temporary resident applications, such as study permits, are based on the discretion of the visa officer handling the application. Therefore, I recommend providing proof of funds (even if it is a lump sum) in your account ( you are not required to submit Dad’s account) and explaining the source. Suppose you don’t have additional funds to complete the required living expenses. In that case, I strongly advise you to request a support letter from the school, addressed to IRCC, stating that they guarantee the funds and that you are eligible for them. They should also know what the scholarship covers, how much will be provided per period, and when it will be disbursed.
Photos of the farm and cattle are insufficient for proof of income source. You should provide evidence of business registration, invoices/receipts and tax documents.
All the best.

It depends on your ambition and financial capability. The Master of Engineering (MEng) is more lucrative but expensive. On the other hand, the diploma is affordable, but I am unsure of the employment opportunities since you did not mention the name of the diploma. It is worth noting that both of them are ineligible for SWOP if you are married.

What message do you intend to convey by including such information? You are required to have living expenses, which include rent, even if you have free accommodation. In my opinion, such information is unlikely to have a positive impact on your application.
A marriage certificate is sufficient for a non-accompanying spouse.

Having the funds is always preferable when applying for a study permit. But many have received approvals with Mpower loans. So, it should be used as a last resort.

Thank you so much for your comment. Although I’m not married, the clarification about SOWP was really helpful. I had initially thought that all Master’s degree programmes were eligible, but from your feedback and the information on the IRCC portal, I’ve now learned that SOWP is only applicable to (MSc category) Master’s programmes with a minimum duration of 16 months.

Bro, please be calm. This is actually my first time hearing something like this, and I’m here to learn too…

Do you mean your school sent you an email saying that the programme you applied for (the same one that was used to issue your study permit) has now been cancelled?

If that’s the case, what happens to all the money and effort already spent on securing the study permit? And will the same study permit still be valid for the same school if you decide to switch to another course?

I don't believe there's any cause to worry. You can present your current docuemts at the border/POE and obtain a study permit.

However, once you're settled, it is your responsibility to immediately review the available programs in that same school and request a change of program. Otherwise , you will neeed to reapply for another study permit if you choose to change entirely to another school instead.
