I work as a sales boy in a shop were curtain accessories are sold and in this line of business some customers tend to owe not because they don't have but because they don't want to. So there is this man that I know and he owes other people too, he should be in his forties and I'm 21, so he bought goods from my shop today worth #60k and told me he will pay me once he gets back from were he wants to use the items he bought so he decided to drop his phone because I didn't allow him to carry my goods without paying. so this evening when he arrived he was sweating and complaining that the customer has not paid blah blah blah..as usual of them He couldn't even pay up the person that went to work with him complete. He tried explaining to me sweating and all that that what is left in his account is #35k which he paid to me but I didn't allow him to go with his phone, I turned deaf ears to his ranting and assured him he is not leaving there with his phone without paying the remaining balance of #25k. He had no other choice than to leave without his phone and now am worried if I have done something wrong . Was I wrong to keep his phone? What would have been the right action I would have taken because I'm feeling very bad now like what will he tell his wife about his phone.

Tharmon:You are a very wicked person.... After he squzzed his last 35k for you, you still kept his phone... now you are asking us about your action...... You could hv just note his contact and adress since you knew someone he tends to use the material for did not pay him... The only thing you can't run aware from is conscience look at how you're feeling now cos you hurt your fellow man... locate that man and give him his phone for your peace of mind.... On a final note always have compassion for your fellow man. |

Tharmon:You have to separate your church mind from business especially in Nigeria!!! Your business should be a legal entity of is own and your business money is not yours in the first place... That's is your doing your business aright. Since he was not paid, he should have brought back your items... Simple! |

Kosoco:you don't talk very much like someone that have sense. The agreement was to pay him his money and get his phone back. The phone was a form of payment to the seller until the real money comes. The op is also working hard for his money as a seller. So why should he give the man his goods for free? Did he get it free from his supplier? @Tharmon the moment you give that man the phone back, you'll lose your power and will need to beg and beg before you get shishi from him. You guys had an agreement, if he can't keep to this one even when his phone is involved, what make you think he'll suddenly pay back the money on his own when you have no leverage on him? Hold onto the phone when he pays back and give it to him with an apology and explain your position. Even next time he repeats that still collect the phone and hold on to it. Debtors are not your business friends. They will kill your business of you allow them |
| Re: I Collected A Customer's Phone Because He Couldn't Pay, Now I'm Bothered by Host78: 5:55am On Sep 06, 2025 |
Kosoco:op conscience is disturbing him because he's a good guy. You can't say the same thing about the buyer. As a father, you feel bad to punish your son when he does something bad. That's conscience. But would a good father allow his son to go bad just to have a clear conscience? Of course not. That's a bad father. We need to understand that sometimes love is pain not just pleasure. Sometimes you don’t want to punish people but if you don't they will destroy you. Since he's sure to pay back let him come and rescue his phone with the money. Op as a sales boy please don't give anybody anything without them dropping something you can sell to raise that money. Let it become something you're known for in the market. Such that if anyone is coming to your shop, they will come with something valuable to give you. You're the one doing good by giving people items for anything other than money. They are not doing you a favor by patronising you. They come because they NEED what you sell. If you start giving people things for free, soon you'll be the one in trouble. I'm saying this multiple times because I've been a sales boy before and trust me wetin my eyes see for debtors hand eh, it almost crumbled my oga's business until I resolve to stand firm. Sure some customers stopped coming around but they were never customers but people that always owe for months and pay only when you've spent money calling and visiting their homes or threatening to fight them. Trust me, it's not good business. Hold onto that phone and every other debtors phone I beg you for your own good. |

Kosoco:But the money is not his. It's for his boss. Don't you think he will fall into trouble with this your advice? And if he does, will you be ready to help him out as a nice person? |

Kosoco:Someone suggested you should pay for the man na. Why the Cho Cho Cho? Since you are not wicked, pay for the man and God will bless you more |

If he doesn't pay to the last kobo don't release the phone to him and don't allow him guilt-trip you into giving him. Debtors are very wicked sets of people, give them a little leeway and watch them cripple your business |

![]() In my many years of dealing with people and money, it's safe to say you did the right thing. Like someone said earlier, don't bring emotions into business. I was at the receiving end at some point. Never ever give in to such! Besides, you're the sales boy. Tread carefully! |

You kept his phone, not his life. His phone is not more important than the sustainability of your business. I will trash my phone for my business to survive. You have done no wrong. But if you don't have the mind to run a business or manage someone else’s business, better to quit now and try begging. |

You can return the phone only if you'll be responsible for paying the 25k balance. |

zeuss:He did the right thing but to avoid further wahala, whenever you take people's things like that as security, you also get them to sign a some kinda agreement to avoid time wasting matters in the future. We've seen chronic onigbese wey go owe, drop phone but later report for station. If no be say stubborn me was the girls alibi, police for use her shine... |

A lady I once Scot to stay with me, I was trying to tell her to leave cuz she hardly sleep at home, she all go out 7pm and back 8am she refuse going and she sieze my phone. I report her to the police just so they can help send her out, Na there wahala start, they charge her for stealing my phone. I just wish I don't report to police that day, but am happy many things was unrevealed about her. |

Kosoco:On the contrary he actually did well, Nigerians are very bad in paying debts and any transactions with a Nigerian should be backed with some collateral and the said phone is a good collateral. How can you buy materials on credit and expect the vendor to understand that the person you use that same material for didn't pay you? |

Kosoco:Did you read where he said he is a sales boy? Did you read where he said they do this alot ? How about you own the business and they do this to you by buying and not paying, do you think your business would thrive ? You just sounded like a child who don't live in a business world , do you know anything about business? Some times we shouldn't just comment, Read to Understand and not reading to respond Cheers man |

The op is a young man with a conscience, not of guilt for what he did by seizing the phone but of empathy/compassion because of the customers situation. But here’s my own little summation.. Op you have to be very careful! Learn to stand firm! Many may play on your empathic nature to run you street. That’s how brutal some evil humans can be. Remember you are a sales boys not the business owner. |
