Never collect somebodys phone in exchange for goods you are encouraging crime in the society, someone will thief phone drop it collect goods and sell it.

Then you will handle the stolen phone for him.

I work as a sales boy in a shop were curtain accessories are sold and in this line of business some customers tend to owe not because they don't have but because they don't want to.

So there is this man that I know and he owes other people too, he should be in his forties and I'm 21, so he bought goods from my shop today worth #60k and told me he will pay me once he gets back from were he wants to use the items he bought so he decided to drop his phone because I didn't allow him to carry my goods without paying. so this evening when he arrived he was sweating and complaining that the customer has not paid blah blah blah..as usual of them

He couldn't even pay up the person that went to work with him complete. He tried explaining to me sweating and all that that what is left in his account is #35k which he paid to me but I didn't allow him to go with his phone, I turned deaf ears to his ranting and assured him he is not leaving there with his phone without paying the remaining balance of #25k. He had no other choice than to leave without his phone and now am worried if I have done something wrong .

Was I wrong to keep his phone? What would have been the right action I would have taken because I'm feeling very bad now like what will he tell his wife about his phone.
Next time don't just give the goods instead on credit

Bro... so many people are passing through a lot you can imagine his level of frustration while he was sweating and coming to your shop without your money... I believe he will complete that money. Thank for your understanding 🙏 you will go far
With this advise of yours, if he handles only 3 other transactions as you have advised, he will certainly be without job any time soon. Surely.

Business is not about emotions and empty trust.

You did wrong. That was a sincere man yet you turned deaf ears. Tomorrow you'll go to church and start praying for God's mercy while you cannot be merciful to your fellow man. You've given him and experience that he will never forget.

If you listen that what that man said, you will certainly be without job very very soon. Business is not about sentiment and emotions. One must be pragmatic and deal with everyone base on their merit and credibility.

If the man was a principled person like me, if I was in that man’s shoes, I wouldn’t have asked for my phone back without redeeming my promise. That is certainly how the mind of a sincere person works

You are a very wicked person.... After he squzzed his last 35k for you, you still kept his phone... now you are asking us about your action......
You could hv just note his contact and adress since you knew someone he tends to use the material for did not pay him... The only thing you can't run aware from is conscience look at how you're feeling now cos you hurt your fellow man... locate that man and give him his phone for your peace of mind.... On a final note always have compassion for your fellow man.
Nothing bad in what he /she do to the man just that bad ones don't let us know the good ones

You are almost there but you are not there yet. Taking his phone is the right action, feeling bad about it shows you are not emotionally matured to run a business yet to run a business in a “ churchously” wicked country like Nigeria.

If you want to improve your in your business sell no credit to these artisans.

the worst thing you can do is mixing business with emotion.

Don't release the phone to him till he pays all, he will still buy tomorrow from you if you have what he needs, he will only understand you are principled
Re: I Collected A Customer's Phone Because He Couldn't Pay, Now I'm Bothered by Dronyemachi53(m): 1:24pm On Sep 06, 2025
After you give him the phone, prepare to write another post on how debtor has refused to pay you.

For an example, loan app..alot of Nigerians don't like paying their debts.

Hold the phone till he completes your money except U want to gamble on his sincerity.

That's how my dad's cement business crashed ..till today,he couldn't get back his money from debtors... One story after the other.

those saying U should return the phone are chronic debtors in real life... ✌️

Yes.Some tribes can't run spareparts business for instance where it's unfortunately a culture to be owed for services rendered while some tribes are used to such endurance.

You that is not wicked, you should have asked for his account details and forward the balance to him so that the man can get his phone back ASAP.
It is simple!

is it his conscience that he will tender to his own boss!!? Even if he own the business. Business is business except you have money in your personal pocket (different from business capital) to pay back if he doesn't come back.
