Four Workers Rescued After Yaba Building Collapse In Lagos by cityboylagos(op): 1:07pm On Sep 13, 2025
A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night, September 12, 2025, at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State, leaving several workers trapped and residents in shock.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30 pm, sparked panic as eyewitnesses reported seeing men buried beneath the rubble. Residents in the area immediately rushed to assist before emergency responders arrived. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Swift Rescue Operations
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), four adult male construction workers were rescued alive from the debris and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

Emergency responders from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked through the night to search for victims. The area was cordoned off to prevent further accidents as rescue teams carefully navigated the unstable structure.

“No effort is being spared to save lives,” a NEMA spokesperson said, praising the professionalism and bravery of the rescue teams.

Growing Concerns Over Building Safety in Lagos

Building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often blamed on poor construction materials, weak regulation, and negligence by developers.

Experts note that despite repeated government warnings and demolitions of unsafe structures, dozens of collapses are still recorded yearly across the state, causing deaths, injuries, and displacement of families.

The Alagomeji collapse is the latest in a string of incidents fueling calls for stricter enforcement of building codes.
What’s Next?

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and vowed to hold developers accountable if negligence is confirmed.

Meanwhile, residents of Yaba and other parts of Lagos continue to express fear that more buildings under construction may pose similar risks if urgent reforms are not implemented.

I think LABSCA needs to take a closer look at the Yaba axis , I can't imagine how a lot of the buildings in that axis were approved in the first instance .

I don't understand how we are still struggling with construction engineering in this country. How is this even happening in 2025?

It's clear that area will be on strick evaluation now. Many houses will be detected substandard and marked for demolition. Many will want to bribe officials not to demolish their structures!

Old school structures plenty for Yaba, Alagomeji, Ebute meta! Some built due to the old railway corporation.

All these developers are just killing people with substandard structures too!

Most of them are 2 floors built in the 50s-70s and are sound structurally. The main culprits are those recently built with developer mindset, build quickly and cheaply. You can always tell a useless construction from the way and manner it's built..
Truly they are much in Yaba axis..
Terrible decelopers.

It is advisable to always abide by the rules and regulations of LASPPPA (Lagos States TownPlanning Office) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) when errecting a building in Lagos, it is quite doubtful If the people responsible for this collapsed building cared to obtain a building permit at all.

If they did applied and got an approval this tragic incident would not have occured because LASBCA would have been coming to certify the integrity of every Stage of the construction, from foundation to roofing.

when a building is under construction in Lagos State, the govt officials that are responsible for check mating the projects always go to d site to compel the enginears to give them money.
They are not ready for any proper inspection

You see a bricklayer parading himself as Engineer, you see an Architect doing the work of an Engineer, you see unqualified people handling and supervising housing projects. They even get more projects to handle than the professionals and well trained people.

It’s rife in Lagos now. That’s why my friend who wants to buy a house, im thinking of advising him if it’s not better to buy an empty land in an estate if he’s afraid of the usuals and build. That way he’s sure of the structural integrity of the property.

The root of this problem is in the City administration. This is not about the use of sub standard materials or short cuts ..cutting corners. This is a building under construction. Which city inspector approved the construction so far? ....these are the people that need to be held accountable. If they were doing their job...then the construction would've been shut down and the building demolished for failing to meet standards. Those inspectors are never held accountable.

All blame to the fake Professionals

But none to the money bag that is cutting the corner by employing unqualified professionals.
To be a "developer" no hard now,no skill is needed, just have money and you can claim to have developed Abuja sef

Thank God the workers were rescued safely.
This reminds me how delicate life is — just like when someone undergoes a brain aneurysm repair and every second matters.
Authorities must investigate thoroughly to ensure stricter building safety standards.
Wishing the injured a quick recovery and hoping lessons are learned to prevent future accidents.
