Expect Reform to clap back at Labour by targeting another "minority" or "vulnerable" group.

There is not much milk left in the immigration thing.

They need to pick another issue that can evoke strong opinion to keep the polling high.

Like putting a cap on how many children migrants can have or if they want give birth they must exit the country to bear children elsewhere

At embolden, exactly 💯 that's simply the truth of their target but being who they are can't afford to chest it. Zia tries by calling out non-EU but we all know their main target.

Zahra29:
The proposed ILR changes are not only being targeted at skilled workers - other groups such as SWV dependents and asylum seekers will also be impacted. The latter currently do not have to be in employment and pay taxes in order to achieve ILR. Refugees can access benefits before ILR etc so some of the proposed eligibility conditions will impact some groups more.

Since the colonial times, the mentality of the UK gov has been to try and extort or make their trade as one sided as possible. It was evident in their dealings with China during their century of humiliation, the decision to leave the EU and still shapes most of their immigration policies to this day.

The UK has set a dangerous precedent, showing its hand as unreliable and capable of being bent to the whims of a racist minority against the actual needs of the country. As far as I know, people can make it to 10 years before ILR and they can change it to 20 years again grin

Did they think about how this makes them look? Attracting immigrants in the future in case of another pandemic or when there is a need for health and social workers? The same immigrants who risked their lives during the pandemic are now being denigrated and made scapegoats, the same ones who they clapped for and applauded are those to be discarded like menstrual rags. They are the ones being obviously targeted by this policy and its sad

I have been here for just 3 years and rules have been changed at least 4 times, so much that its hard to have any form of stability. This is appalling and points to a lack of direction on the part of the gov or policies set in stone. 3 years here, and I have never heard them discuss any advancements in AI, automation, cloud computing, EVs, semiconductors, drones, industrialization, just IMMIGRATION , boats and finger pointing, a dying empire that refuses to look in the mirror.

On the other hand, I am actually glad they are implementing these rules because the immigrant blame cow will be milked to death and then they will have to face reality and find someone or something else to blame (peep how blaming and leaving EU worked out for them). One day, they will tell themselves the truth and admit their traditional ways do not not work in a modern world with alternatives and the system will need actual change

The US / Australia / Canada on the other hand gives legal immigrants giant wings to fly on, multiple pathways to citizenship and high paying jobs that can help you get to your desired financial goals quicker. This is even apart from the plethora of scholarships available for high soaring academics or those willing to put in work.

As long as I am here, I will do as much as possible to advance my interests and port if possible to a country that does not moan about me being here every 1 hr like they are on chron jobs.

Awa o fo, but I rest my case

grin

They want to impose a 6% TAX on International Students so that they will use the money to fund grants for ‘Home’ students!!!!

The same international students that even after getting glossy paper UK degrees will wait a minimum of 10 years to get ILR?

If I say this UK Labour Government has ALL the hallmarks of Nigeria’s 2015 APC, JamesClooney will come for me.

But honestly… what sort of rubbish is that??
I am done putting up with this nonsense.

@Jedisco, where are you? I think it’s time for me to consider Japa inside Japa.

I have a very strong feeling that the Labour Party rep that used to be on this thread, MissJekyll has Japa’ed a long time ago.

10 years is being proposed as the baseline qualifying period for ILR if certain basic conditions are met.

If these conditions are not met = ILR could take longer than 10 years, or might never be achieved.

If additional conditions are met which demonstrate significant contribution e.g. high salary, specialist skills, considerable community impact etc (earned settlement) = ILR could take less than 10 years
From a citizens perspective this makes a lotta sense but the isshhh is that they are other major issh facing the country.

After the 20 years, you go need another 15 years to prove you don assimilate the culture well so you can drive and you must get 8.5 IELTS scores every 2 years

….
Bros, do you even read my posts or just name-drop me for bants?

1. I hate APC. Buhari & Tinubu wrecked Nigeria, forcing millions (incl. me) to japa.

2. Labour Party/Starmer is feckless and on borrowed time. It’s quite obvious they’re in panic mode, hence the name calling while copying Reform’s policies on immigration.

3. Opposition parties always over-promise & under-deliver. It’s the game. Reform’s doing it now. Trump did the same (“Day 1 Ukraine peace, end inflation, only deport criminals” etc).

So why the tears? You’re making it sound like APC and Labour invented it. This is politics 101.

Thanks for spelling out the moniker. grin

One thing though, I am glad Labour is at the forefront of these new anti-immigration policies, else we would have been told na only conservative parties dey anti-immigration. Chai! It is always good to understand humans' behaviour from basic economics, biology and psychology so one plans ahead.

That’s the kind of migrants the uk actually wants- suppressed and conquered folks but it’s when they start seeing them flexing they begin to cry and make noise.
