Funny way to change names without changing names: Excel(Eko electric) IE (Ikeja electric) Electricity would soon become pretty expensive for everyone and there won't be anything like bands again.Every consumer will soon be in band A+. Lagos will soon be unrivalled as the most expensive city per GDP in the world. Families are now sharing flats,a modern version of face me, I face you. Transport cost is so high that on their legitimate incomes, civil servants can't afford to be commuting daily to places of work that exceed 10km from their residence. If you have a car you can't afford to fuel it daily,so you either abandon it or turn it to a taxi when going or coming back. |

mfm04622:I knew that that was going to fail and NERC quickly stepped in to kill it. You can't have electricity if you don't pay for the electricity. |

nairalanda1:Look you are not talking to a novice, I operate is a sector of energy and I know what am saying. No one is saying power should be given freely. But why are the disco unwilling to give people meter even when people are ready to pay for what is supposed to be free. Mainwhile government have paid for these meters which supposed to be the responsibility of the power provider, yet the hoard it from customers. If you don't know that distribution companies are exploiting 1. The government 2. The generation company 3. The customers Then you are not qualify to defend them. |

[quote author=nairalanda1 post=137030498]Yes, and most of your countrymen are not paying that high, and most of them are not paying at all....so consider this is part of why your bill may be that high. Plus in USA...everyone pays their power bill...and please don't lie...I have people in the USA...and what they pay for power for a one bedroom flat in say New Jersey in one month is what people on band B pay in three months. But when everyone pays their power bill, the profits increase and eventually prices will fall...see the GSM sector. So, stop grumbling. We have to accept hard truths in this country. E get why Obasanjo and GEJ privatised power....government ownership was not working because government did not have the funds , before corruption came in to wreck havoc. Again, we need 10 trillion naira annually for 10 years to get power for 24/7. Is any investor that is decent going to come in to a sector where 80% of the customer base are underpaying for power? Lord knows, I wish we could have power at N10 per kwh. But that is fantasy[/quote) Regarding everyone paying their power bill in USA, let's examine how this feat is achieved. Then let's compare their billing system to the current billing system that is prevalent in Nigeria. |

Mandem05:Again, most nigerians who are electricity consumers are charged at a price below the market price. Government pays a subsidy that is not able to cover resulting losses...because tinubu and apc don't understand that their job is to make nigeria richer. Again, we need 15 trillion annually for 5-10 years to fix power. Most of that money needs to come from investments...and our pocket. Tell me, would any investor agree to invest in a power sector where most people are underpaying or not paying at all. This is not GSM, where you cannot use a phone without paying. Again, we need to fight corruption in the sector . GOes without saying. Better face reality. I hate the reality, but here we are. The alternative is that we take loans until our debt becomes unsustainable, and we run out of money...because power must be free of charge. |

The amazing thing about Nairaland is that the issues are usually straightforward and easy to understand, but people are playing politics (and they think that observers don't know). |
| Re: Lagos Licenses New Discos, Replaces Eko, Ikeja Electric by nairalanda1(m): 6:05am On Oct 06, 2025 |
Ttalk:Okay, that means that you are essentially saying government shoult take loans to keep the power free of charge. Keep in mind that because discos cannot increase power fees for most of their consumer base and because discos are being underpaid by same consumer, EVEN WITH THE SUBSIDIES IN PLACE...and at least 30% don't pay for power at all...that is why they dont have enough money to pay gencos. I effing am not defending anyone....and the fact that you assume I am defending anyone shows you completely misunderstand my point. Again, remember we need 15 trillion naira annually to fix power to all our tastes. Porfits earned by discos amount to 1 trillion naira at best, annually, then subsides paid by government amount to 1 trillion annually, that is, if they are paid self. And we need to increase generation. We need 32000 mw to supply everyone connected to the grid right now with 24/7 power, and we need 88000 mw to give every nigerian household 24/7 power. If you think that N1 trillion naira profit would be enough for that, then you are one of those that bought your ferrari last year for N400. Ok...jokes over. The fact is, the sector has a liquidity problem, because we...the rich and the poor, are not paying market price for power. And that is a problem You have GSM Phones because you pay market price for their service...and the government does control prices but not to the extent where they dip below market price. Unlike for power. |

Ttalk:Let me ask you a question...have you heard of meter bypass.? Very common, and that is why metering, despite being desirable, won't solve the problem Also, even if we metered everyone...AND WE SHOULD, Before you come and say I support esitimated billing.....it still does not solve the fact that most consumers are at best paying below market price, and your government subsidies ar enot enough. Gas prices are increasing ....that makes things worse. |

Ttalk:Chai!! You have raised a great point that I'd like to explore. When comparing USA electricity billing system where almost all the customers pay their bills, as opposed to the Nigerian electricity billing system that most Nigerians as subjected to (not by choice). The only thing that stands out to me is the fact that I practically all customers of the American electricity companies have meters that accounts for the electricity they use. As opposed to the estimated billing we have in Nigeria where basically you may not have had electricity all month but at the end of the month you have an electricity bill presented to you to pay. IF DISCOS were responsible companies the first task they would have undertaken would have been to provide prepaid electricity meters for their customers as it is done in some parts of UK. |

| Re: Lagos Licenses New Discos, Replaces Eko, Ikeja Electric by nairalanda1(m): 6:14am On Oct 06, 2025 |
Mandem05:The problem is, there is the issue of meter bypass How bad is meter bypass? 60% of Nigerian electricty consumers who are metered bypass their meters (from TCN figures). With that issue, metering, while very very necessary, is not going to solve the problem. Nigerians have to realize that power is not cheap, and pay their bills, and maybe we would see investment, and eventually the 24 hours a day power. I'm off to do some stuff. |

Ttalk:I believe the answer to the question is YES. So another question is why hasn't metering been done for most of the electricity customers in Nigeria? |

Hope Lagos state involvement will not turn it to extortion spree as it is done on land matters. |

nairalanda1:You are not correct with what you are saying and you just base your opinion on propaganda the distribution companies dish out. Let me ask you again. Who do you think pay more presently between a consumer that uses distribution companies electricity to pump household water and the one who pumps his water through a solar set up. Please I need a straight forward response and not a conjecture and the propaganda stuff |

Please answer this question without any ambiguity Let me ask you, will metering of all houses that needs electricity increase the revenue of the distribution companies? Yes or No |

Mandem05:Nope. As i said, metering is a must. At the end the answer is that we got to accept that power is expensive. No four ways about it. Anything else involves more loans . Apc has already made things worse to have that on our heads Adieu |
| Re: Lagos Licenses New Discos, Replaces Eko, Ikeja Electric by Ttalk: 6:41am On Oct 06, 2025 |
Mandem05:Thank you sir. That is the foundation and a prerequisite condition the distribution company must fulfilled before the government and the customers can entertain any other requests or complain they have In fact, metering everyone means accountability and transparency and the government and the players in energy sector can adequately analyse the data that the system present. Presently there are no records, no data and no verifiable information to support distribution companies claim. How can new investors even come in when the system is run in dubious and intentional manner of secrecy? |

Same people same delivery, nothing special just nomenclature change....wè like fanfare a lot in Nigeria, every little thing is made so big without any significant positive difference in the lives of the citizenry. Check out the names of the representatives of the "new" discos online
