Who Can Really Fix Nigeria, Politicians Or Technocrats? by CommentatorPro(op): 8:39am On Oct 06, 2025
Who Can Really Fix Nigeria — Politicians Or Technocrats?

For decades, Nigerians have been told that politics is for politicians. But looking at the current state of the nation — the economy, power supply, insecurity, and corruption — many are beginning to ask a serious question:
Should Nigeria continue trusting career politicians, or is it time to let technocrats take over?

Politicians often argue that leadership requires experience in governance, understanding of party politics, and connection to the people. They believe technocrats — no matter how intelligent — lack the street wisdom and political structure needed to govern a complex country like Nigeria.

But many Nigerians disagree. They say politicians have ruled for over 60 years with little progress. From one administration to another, we keep seeing the same faces, the same promises, and the same failures.

On the other hand, technocrats — experts in economics, finance, and management — have proven that competence can bring real results. Examples like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Akinwumi Adesina, and Peter Obi have shown that leadership doesn’t always require long years in politics, but the ability to manage people and resources effectively.

So the debate continues:
Do we need more politicians who understand the system, or more technocrats who can fix it?

Some say Nigeria’s problem isn’t who rules, but the system itself — corrupt, wasteful, and resistant to change. Others believe a mix of both worlds — a smart technocrat who understands politics — might be the real solution.

Whatever your opinion, one fact remains clear: Nigeria cannot afford another round of trial-and-error leadership.

So, let’s hear from you
If you had the power to choose Nigeria’s next leader, would you go for a career politician or a proven technocrat — and why?

I see no sense in this post. It's like asking who should fix broken vehicles? Mechanics or Automobile Engineers, when their roles are clearly defined. Auto mobile Engineers design and manufacture vehicles while auto mechanics are responsible for repairs.

Same fashion, technocrats are not trained for politicking. Career politicians are. A good and sincere politician will appoint a tested and trusted technocrat to carry out specific functions towards achieving a set goal.

You may be amazed to know that Ngozi Okonjo may not do well as a President, but we all know she does excellently well as a technocrat.

Leave politics for politicians and leave innovation, creativity and excellence for technocrats.

Your concern should be "are the politicians we are electing into power honest and do they have good intentions for us?".

A benevolent dictator is what Nigeria need at anytime. It cost a lot to win an election in Nigeria. You will wait tire grin stop expecting an "investor" not to recoup before providing dividends of democracy

A politician would have to appoint patriotic technocrats and give him or her free hands to carry out their assignments.

INEC chairman is the person to fix it if he decides to let votes count. We saw the transformation in Abia because a woman decided to do what was right.

The question you should ask is "are we operating the right system of government?"... You are torn between seeking for a politician or tehnocrat repair man for the country because democracy offers the optin for a singular savior; but a system of government like communism does not rely on a savior, it relies on communal efforts with a sole representative doing the common will of the societal party... So i ask again, are we operating the right system of govt given that we are in a multipolar society?

When Technocrats dive into politics, what does that make them. ?

They become politicians...

So it is not about whether we need Technocrats or Politicians.

What we need are people with a good heart and Conscience that are willing to work for the people..

When a politician with a good heart surrounds himself with Technocrats with good Conscience, that is when the magic happens..

Likewise, if an elected Technocrat join forces with good hearted politicians, there would be positive changes

Oga who's debating this again?

It's long proven that politicians are entirely useless. Oh, they're only useful in sucking the country dry. And in filling their own pockets with supposed borrowed funds.

Fixing a country is a collective responsibility. That's why I am mad at the business and religious elites for not calling out political leaders. But they won't call out political leaders because they are all friends with one mission - take and take and take from the people and keep them poor!

Asking who can fix Nigeria is like asking which mechanic can fix a car with no engine. Nigeria has no foundation to build anything sustainable, and politicians know this

The question should no longer be who can fix Nigeria, but who can give Nigeria a new engine by convening a national sovereign conference where the ethnic nationalities that the British forced into their unworkable colonial project called Nigeria, can come together and decide the terms of engagement

No one is coming to fix Nigeria. Its either Nigeria restructures or disintegrates, and people like me prefer the latter

Well that's a vague statement to make saying God can't . But I won't blame you either for this . Cause those who advertise God seems to be mediocre as well and hence it's now looking like God is toothless.

Is that why in 2016 he tinkered with the constitution to extend his term in office grin

Ivory Coast was already a great place to be right from the days of Houphouet Boigny

The earlier the Youths realise that this present APC Tinubu government is a joke the better for them.
The belief that Nigeria can never be fixed, so they should continue to manage Tinubu," half a bread is better than none"" is a consolatory report for a failed nation
