Sani Labels World Bank, IMF ‘witches And Wizards’ Behind Nigeria’s Economic Hard by ogododo(op): 3:19pm On Oct 10, 2025
Former lawmaker and human rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticised the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), describing the Bretton Woods institutions as “the witches and wizards” behind Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship following government-implemented reforms.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Sani said, “The World Bank and IMF are the Witches and Wizards who will tell you to remove subsidies and float your currency in the ocean and expect the miracle of wealth and prosperity, and when the results turn out to be poverty and misery, they blame you for taking the wrong dosage.”

Sani’s remarks come amid mounting public discontent over the excruciating hardship Nigerians have been plunged into by the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2023, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira.

The policies have been praised by the World Bank and IMF as bold and necessary steps to stabilise Nigeria’s economy.

Following Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, both international financial institutions commended the Nigerian government for eliminating the decades-long fuel subsidy and unifying the country’s multiple exchange rates.

The IMF hailed the reforms as “crucial for restoring macroeconomic stability,” while the World Bank described them as “important measures to enhance fiscal transparency and attract foreign investment.”

However, the immediate aftermath of the policies has been marked by soaring inflation, a sharp depreciation of the naira, and a dramatic rise in living costs.

Fuel prices tripled within months, transportation and food costs spiked, and millions of households were plunged deeper into poverty.

In a reverse negative turn of events, a recent World Bank report released in September 2025 projected that by 2026, over 140 million Nigerians, roughly two-thirds of the country’s population, could be living in extreme poverty, driven by inflation, job losses, and weak social safety nets.

The report warned that Nigeria’s poverty rate would continue to rise unless the government implemented “targeted interventions” to cushion vulnerable groups from the impact of economic reforms.

Senator Sani has frequently criticised the influence of Western financial institutions on Nigeria’s economic policy.

His “witches and wizards” analogy underscores widespread frustration among Nigerians who feel the reforms, though lauded internationally, have deepened domestic suffering.

Sani’s post has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing his sentiments that the IMF and World Bank’s economic recommendations have failed to deliver tangible improvements for ordinary citizens.

Reacting to Sani’s remarks, an X user, @Adebanjosanya wrote, “The irony is that the same institutions prescribing “economic freedom” know it leads to dependency, not development.

“They hand you the pois0n, call it reform, and later write reports analyzing how you died.”

Also, @MarvellousIsra3, asked, “They will tell you to put your hand in the fire because you are foolish and lack sense, you will go and put your hand in the fire shey?

“Is there any advice they have been giving to Tinubu that they didn't give to the predecessors before him?”

As Nigeria grapples with inflation and a weakening naira that recently crossed N1,500 to the dollar, debates continue over whether the nation’s economic strategy should follow international advice or pursue a more locally driven recovery path.

Shehu Sani is indirectly telling us that Buhari was smarter than Tinubu in governance, because Buhari rejected IMF's advise while Tinubu followed their advise, now Tinubu supporters want us to believe that Tinubu is better than Peter Obi, the question to them: is Buhari better than Peter Obi?

IMF did not tell Tinubu to move fuel price from 187 to 600 overnight , it was his self centered agenda that made him do it ..importers has imported million of litres and made over 300 percent profit because of that announcement

COMRADES, when the narrative suits them, they heap praises on world bank, but if the narrative is the truth about the poverty level in Nigeria, the apc uses people like Sani or Ominkry to criticise the world bank

The real "witches and wizards" are those in government who sheepishly do the biddings of those institutions.

Just imagine someone that actually hailed Tinubu as the messiah because he was fighting El-rufai. Now instead of blaming TINUBU you want to blame people you borrow from?

When you join APC ..you become lost grin

Correct label.
But include those Nigerian leaders who grab IMF recommendations lock, stock and barrel, beginning with Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

Babangida fresh from military .coup d'etat had to swallow IMF prescription hook, line and sinker. He wanted to legitimise his military govt before Western countries who frown at military leadership.
Re: Sani Labels World Bank, IMF ‘witches And Wizards’ Behind Nigeria’s Economic Hard by Lanruze:
Senator Shehu Sani had better be circumspect in his utterances against the World Bank.

Nigeria is heavily indebted to the Multilateral lending organisation. The World Bank has one of the most reasonable concessionary long-term rates on loans.

I usually laugh when citizens praise the Tinubu led Government on the "outright" removal of PMS subsidy, FX rates Unification and Tax net expansion.

The three (3) policies above are World Bank dictated policies and never worked in any country.

China and the Asian Tigers used home grown industrial revolution policies to advance its fortunes, Brazil modeled a "Bolsa familia" home grown policy, Rwanda used its own home grown model of environment cleanliness and urban renewal initative to attract tourists and the list goes-on.

The best advice for any right thinking middle income Nigerian is to look elsewhere for greener pastures especially countries with a stable currency whilst pumping investments in Nigeria. In Ten (10) Years you will thank your stars you took the plunge.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are just lending institutions.
No African country has prospered as a result of following the advice of the World Bank or the IMF.
Re: Sani Labels World Bank, IMF ‘witches And Wizards’ Behind Nigeria’s Economic Hard by VladimirTheGrea: 11:28pm On Oct 10, 2025
Everybody knows that.

They sold it to Pablo so he can appear legitimate before them. They had him devalue the currency so he can reduce the little strength the Naira had against foreign currencies. They told him subsidy had to go for growth to come in and the checks on the books would become green and very nice not considering what that that would mean for the people.

The urban bandit yielded. Today, they're praising him for whatever reforms which includes excess borrowing. I pity the dafts that have been pushing him to such destructive ends.

Any leader of Nigeria who has skeleton in his cupboard embraces deadly prescriptions by the IMF. The leader needs to implement the deadly prescriptions to be in good terms with the West. Nigeria's doggy leaders implement the IMF prescriptions without bothering about the ugly consequences on the masses of Nigeria.

Misplaced blame, let's call a spade a spade and point accusations to the right direction.
Tinupu hastly removed subsidy without metigation plans, without understanding anything. Infact, he stated clearly that " NA STATISTICS WE GO CHOP"

Tinubu Took an action that requires alot of statistical knowledge to drive home. Technocrats inputs like what we saw from the Jonathan Regime of Subsidy re-investment program aka" Sure-P "program existed before mentioning of any removal of subsidy. SURE-P buses where seen everywhere at a highly subsidized price.

Alas, the reality of Tinubu's lack of regards for statistics brought us to this terrible hardship and not world bank or IMF advice.

Sani, would do well and be bold enough to point his accusations to the right direction "Balabluuu without economic cues and a legend of misplaced priorities.
