Wafcon Expands to 16 Teams For 2026 Finals

The Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals will expand from 12 to 16 teams starting from the 2026 edition, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced.

Next year's tournament in Morocco 🇲🇦 was set to have 12 competing sides, and qualifying for the finals has already reached the second and final round.

The expansion will likely require a third round of preliminaries to be played, with 11 remaining nations competing for four spots.

Caf is expected to announce further details after discussions at its executive committee meeting being held in Kinshasa.

Wafcon was an eight-team tournament from its first edition in 1998 until the 2018 finals in Ghana 🇬🇭.

The 2020 Wafcon was scrapped because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the competition returned with 12 sides in 2022.

Caf has invested in order to improve women's football on the continent, with this year's tournament in Morocco seeing a 45% increase in the overall prize pot to $3.45m (£2.6m).

Champions Nigeria 🇳🇬 were handed $1m (£750,000) after winning a record-extending 10th Wafcon title.
"I am pleased with the progress we've made in women's African football," Caf president Patrice Motsepe said.

"Part of my starting point is making sure [men and women] are paid well and they can make a career out of football.

"I can assure you women's football will continue to improve because that is an area we are focussing on a lot."

I support this move! But it should have been announced before the qualifiers began, instead of changing the rules in the middle of the game.
Anyway, CAF may have to extend the duration of the tournament by at least one or two days in the interest of the players’ health and adequate TV coverage

If we lose this girl, men it’s finish because this girl is just too good in the air and a typical no.9 that we don’t have.. She will benefit a lot from Okoronkwo who’s a better with delivery good crosses and assists..

Madugu better Bring this girl in and play her alongside Okoronkwo and Ajibade upfront.

Imade is well built, fast and Strong. You will need two very powerful Defenders to get her down…

4️⃣ goals in 5 League games not bad at all..

• Edna Imade
• Joy Omewa
• Asisat Oshoala

Should be Super Falcons no.9 in that particular order as Esther can play as our Right Winger since she loves to drift wide alot and can draw players to herself to open space for the rest.

What of Monday Gift 🤦‍♂️🙆‍♂️

Edna Imade and Joy Omewa
We need to quickly draft them into the SF setup.

Oshoala at this point is a honorary member of the team and quite frankly isn't in contention to for lot of playing time.

Esther Okoronkwo still ahead of the pack in my opinion. Gift Monday retuning may mean an adjustment to Esther's role but we'll see. The CIA h also fancies Ihezuo so she should roster. New entrants are Imade and Omewa. We'll see what they bring to the table, I just hope they are capped soon and given a chance to show what they can bring to the team. If it were up to me for the forth coming qualifiers, I won't invite Asisat and Ihezuo, I'll replace them with Omewa and Imade and vice both some playing time once the damage is done to the opponent.

[quote author=lovewins post=136916504]Joy Okonye currently leads players on Nigerian decent at the NCCA in goals and assists.

She has 5 goals and 5 assists so far this season (in 10 games.

BTW, I don't know how old she is because there's no verifiable information online indicative of this, I however would have loved to see her at the u20 world cup. I'm guessing she should be 19+ being a junior

Below are links to 2 of the crazy goals she scored just 4 days ago. Just amazing stuff.

I was researching the performances of Nigerian players in the NCAA, a "Nigerian" name appeared on the top scorers list that piqued my curiosity, but was sad to realize that Canada already capped her.

Meet 18 yr old Skillful forward Annabelle Chukwu, who since 2024 scored 25 goals and 2 Assists for Canada u20 team in 17 games.

She's currently one of the top scorers in the NCAA with 8 goals in 20 games.

Here's a link showing just how skillful she is.

dont see Canada letting Annable go. She is the future of Canadian football. Also the NFF is not serious. We are not even sure we can get Edna Imade. Vicky Lopez was ready to play for Nigeria but nobody from the NFF approached her. Onyeka Gamero is also there but I doubt the NFF will approach her. Our NFF are just too unserious.

I really dream of a day this our nwfl will be a destination zone in female football for other African stars and even foreigners just the way Mexico is currently. We go need setup a lot of stuff off pitch to guarantee that level of attraction though.
