Publish Contractual Details Of Lagos-calabar Coastal Highway, Atiku Tells FG by Ofunaofu(op): 3:30am On Oct 17, 2025
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has asked the federal government to publish the full contractual details, including financing terms and counterpart obligations of Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project.

He also said the project should be subjected to an independent value-for-money audit while further payments are suspended until Nigerians are assured it genuinely serves national interest.

Atiku stated this while stressing that he has been vindicated over the admittance by the minister of Works, David Umahi, that the actual cost is indeed closer to N8 billion per kilometre.

According to a statement by Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the minister had, in 2024, had countered Atiku’s disclosure that the project came at a cost of N8 billion per kilometre.

When the Tinubu administration unveiled the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar raised the alarm that the project’s cost was inflated to an outrageous N8 billion per kilometre.

“At the time, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, dismissed the claim, insisting in a 2024 interview that: ‘You will find out that our cost is N4 billion instead of the N8 billion claimed by the former Vice President.’

“However, the same minister has now done a volte face and admitted that the actual cost is indeed closer to N8 billion per kilometre — precisely what Atiku warned Nigerians about.

“This admission not only vindicates the former Vice President’s position but also exposes the Tinubu administration’s lack of transparency in managing one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s history.”

Atiku said he had earlier questioned both the cost structure and financing model of the coastal highway, describing it as opaque, inflated, and suspiciously designed to benefit vested interests rather than the Nigerian people.

“Now, even by the Minister’s own account, the Federal Government’s commitment is only 15%–30% of the total project cost, meaning the bulk of the estimated $11 billion would supposedly be sourced by the contractor. This raises fundamental questions: Who are the actual financiers? What sovereign guarantees underpin this arrangement? How did a project initially presented as cost-efficient balloon to Atiku’s projected figure?

“This development reinforces Atiku Abubakar’s consistent call for due process, competitive bidding, and transparency in all major public projects.

Nigerians deserve openness, not contradictions and concealed deals.

“Once again, Atiku has proven himself a statesman who speaks truth to power — not out of politics, but out of patriotism. He understands that every inflated contract represents theft from the Nigerian people.

We, therefore, call on the Tinubu administration to: Publish the full contractual details, including financing terms and counterpart obligations;

“Subject the project to an independent value-for-money audit; and Suspend further payments until Nigerians are assured that the project genuinely serves national interest.

“The Nigerian people are watching — and history, yet again, has vindicated Atiku Abubakar,” the statement said.

My own major issue with this coastal highway fraud is the timing and priority, like, look at all the problems Nigeria is facing today then Tinubu decides to spend trillions that the government itself does not even know the exact total estimate and when the contract will end.

is this among the topmost priority in Nigeria as at today?

Something that will be used to fund the 2027 Elections, dey play !

That cost per kilometer that Umahi mentioned is still subject to prevailing market realities.

Haba! Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu has told you several times to calm down naa.

You still will not become the President of Nigeria with all this your gra-gra.

Buhari just finished his 8years in office and you never ask him to publish the details of any contract he awarded, so why the double standard? grin

Return to Dubai and keep enjoying your money naa. grin

When is this Dubai landlord loser going to raise dust or condemn Sokoto-Badagry highway that will benefit the north?. Atiku is using some useful edihots in the south to condemn the projects in the south while he and northerners remain mute on the projects in the north. It goes to show many southern wailers are still politically immature.

That road is by far the most expensive road in the entire history of Nigeria. If they actually wanted to deliver that road, several construction companies should be awarded various sections of it using the stipulated standard and specifications

Of all the people of this country. Atiku is calling somebody to come and publish details. Atiku of atikulooted or who? Charcoal is calling kettle black. Did Atiku ever come out to explain what's SPV? And How much was paid to that SPV. Did Nigeria forget so soon?? Some gullible guys here already supporting his assertion blindly not knowing he is playing politics of bitter opposition.
Fine, for the interest of the good people of this country, I just wish that the minister for once and for all can make details of the contract available in the public not because Atiku or any other looters of this great country.

I concur with you bro. He always criticise projects in the South but throw his face on the norther projects. because he knw, he may looser some voters if he does that. But our southerners are politically naive, especially SE people. They never still understand politics of interest and development.
Abuja- Kaduna-Zaria- kano is going, Kano- Maiduguri ongoing. Did you ever see Atiku ask about cost per kilometers of those road of importance to the north? South New to wake up politically. We can't be manipulated all the time nah
