justwise:Decided to look at some of this campaign promises and the approach to immigration is just funny Farage said he would entirely abolish indefinite leave to remain (ILR), which is open to people who have worked and lived in the UK legally for five continuous years, and their dependants. After a minimum of a year on that status, people can apply for British citizenship, though each stage comes with considerable fees. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/22/farage-vows-to-scrap-settled-status-placing-thousands-at-risk-of-deportation Do they bother to think before spewing stuff like this? No immigrant who would have alternatives will stick around for crap like this or do they think immigrants just pick money on the floor in London?. ![]() This will ultimately leave them with immigrants with no alternatives who probably be "lowly skilled" which means the solution solves nothing ![]() |

HustlaOfLagos:They just have to say something to grab votes most time they will end up not doing anything too differently from previous governments. Just look at America now after promising to make America first the people are now hearing that over 40 billion dollars is going to Argentina while health subsidies for Americans will be scrapped 😂 even Qatar will now have an airforce facility in the US. Remember Brexit they promised heaven and earth only to open the flood gates for all sorts of immigrants like Ukrainians, hongkongers, Afghans etc which are actually the figures that shot net migration up than students and work visas. At the end Keir starmer and the Labour govt may actually be the ones to actually reduce net migration compared to the noisy Torries or Reform |

HustlaOfLagos:Stopping the boats or smashing the gangs are just buzz words for the electorate. To the politicians it means nothing actually. How do you stop what’s needed for your primary industries 😂 |

Raalsalghul:Its surprising when I see folks fawn over European migrants, the good old days of EU migration and how those eastern Europeans 'integrated' and assimilated the culture. I'm usually like - is it thesame country we're referring to? Take any headline today and change the current migrant population to 'Polish migrants' and boom we're in 2014. People complained how half their town only spoke Romanian. Any progress in Poland was put down to the money Polish workers sent back home. Not even touching all the tripe about 'taking our jobs'. One of my favourite headlines is pictured below Interestingly, same attitude has been seen in different countries at different times. E.g it's when the Irish or Italians moved to the U.S, many were hated but today, na them be examples of 'model migrants' Don't be surprised that in the next few years, the narrative would be how integrated those Nigerian migrants were.

ReesheesuKnack:Interesting. Had similar discussions a while back. It ended with me asking the bloke why folks aren't chasing Argentinian government debt with 'massive' yields When I see a country offering 20% in government debt, my initial question is why? Except one catches the tide tide well e.g with the recent naira devaluation and frantic dollar hype followed by high rates and a steady currency, otherwise such moves usually come back to bite. The last time 9ja offered such rates, many forex holders who delved in lost a lot as the naira devalued much more than their gain. If like in this case, the person is relocating, then all good but personally, I'd still hedge my bets. |

The grandson of an immigrant and married to an immigrant. | Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Goodenoch: 5:16pm On Oct 20, 2025 |
HustlaOfLagos:Lol no. Eton is by money and connections. Not the one you asked, but they are tests for grammar schools. They’re academically selective so the perception is that they provide higher quality education compared to state schools without needing to pay private school fees. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Cyberknight: 6:21pm On Oct 20, 2025*. Modified: 7:41pm On Oct 21, 2025 |
Goodenoch:Correct. One correction: most grammar schools are state schools (i.e. funded by the government, so no school fees to pay). That's why people rush them. @HustlaOfLagos: The exam children take here is like the Common Entrance exam we take in Nigeria to enter federal and state schools. Like in Nigeria, where the federal unity schools had catchment areas, the same applies here, so there is a formula for allocating students to schools to which a child applies based on their score in the 11-plus exam (the England equivalent of Nigeria's Common Entrance), where you live, and other contextual admissions factors. Kent has the largest number of grammar schools in England, followed by Bucks, and people move around just to be in a catchment area so their children can go to grammar schools. Admissions fraud is a thing whereby people pretend to live in a catchment area using addresses of friends or family or even go to the extent of renting a property within a catchment area just to be able to apply to a desired school. It's very common for children to travel in from long distances away. I live in Bucks and it's always impressive to see the young children jumping onto the train early in the morning when I'm heading to work. South east England is diverse, definitely, but I do get the impression that quite a lot of the children travelling up and down are "minority", ethnic, BAME, whatever the PC term is. |

Cyberknight:Thank you for the answer Is there a way one can see where those schools are? Are the exams typically difficult or they are relatively easy with practice over time? | Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Santa2: 4:46am On Oct 21, 2025 |
HustlaOfLagos:Personally I think the exams are a bit difficult especially for a 10 or 11 year old. Just like common entrances were those days. But with lots of practise over time it becomes relatively easy. You often have people start to prepare their wards 3-4 years before the kids have to take the exams. Just like someone alluded to, Most people move to the south east to be well placed for these schools, Its one of the major reasons we moved from the North to Kent sometime back. Locrating is good tool to use to see where the schools are and their ranking, You usually are not just looking to get your kids into just any grammar school, you will want them to get into the best within your capabilities(get into the eton of grammar schools ). |

And when the French authorities took it literally by slashing the boats before they left for the waters, the same bits were complaining about human rights, makes you wonder what they want. They prefer legal migration to be cut... people that work and pay tax o, do they think people would leave high paying jobs to be claiming benefits. How dem wan take survive? Now their school fees are going to be raised again due to low international students enrolment 🫣 HustlaOfLagos: |

Anyone else get the feeling that Meghan and Harry have been treated far harsher than Andrew, both by the royal family and the general British populace? Every other day there’s a hit piece in rags like the Mirror, Telegraph etc about Meghan and there’s even a thriving cesspool of a subreddit dedicated solely to attacking Meghan. I wonder why. Lol just kidding - actually, I don’t. |

bigtt76:The bolded is the bit that gets me every time. You think I paid 20k plus upfront for my one year masters (apart from application fee, IHS etc) as part of some grand strategy to sit down waiting for 300 ish pounds per month? As how nau. What will I do with that? Of course there are other benefits that people are entitled to but the fundamental point is why on earth would someone who paid such substantial sums be thought to be planning to become reliant on benefits? |

Goodenoch:These people think students come in and start applying for benefits from the airport while also taking their jobs - the same jobs they wont do. Where I used to work as a SW, the only two white people who managed to come started to cook up excuses after 2 weeks. The last one was even a relative of the owner, after 2 days e begin complain about trauma and didnt show up again from the 3rd day. Trauma, for supported living, if na come proper forensic mental health nko with people who have severe mental health issues ![]() Can't win with them ![]() |
