Why Is The Price Of Rice Crashing In Lagos? by NaijaphiliaBlog(op): 11:52pm On Oct 27, 2025
The price of rice is currently going through the floor in multiple markets all over Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria.

This has been confirmed by traders and consumers in the city interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and who disclosed that the essential victual has witnessed a sudden drop in price.

The crash in price affects both local and foreign brands of rice.

In various markets such as Arena (Oshodi), Festac Town, Mile 12, and Oyingbo, a 50kg bag local rice which sold for about ₦85,000 in January 2025 currently sells between ₦60,000 and ₦70,000.

Likewise, foreign rice which was ₦95,000 as at January is now between ₦65,000 and ₦75,000 depending on the brand/location.

The price drop has been credited to improved local harvests and a massive surge in imports following the reopening of Nigeria’s borders.

What's more? Dollar price moved down MASSIVELY from 1500/1usd to 1499/usd. Petrol from 1000/litter to 995/litter.

These are considered as earthshaking progress . Remind them of the prices of all these before APC and they start to foam in the mouth.

No mind Tinubu and his paid agents. Since he doesn't have any meaningful development he achieved since he became President, he has resorted to propagating lies through the 10,000 South West Youths he recently employed, to defend him online.

When local manufacturers had opportunities to leverage on government's support and make life comfortable for fellow citizens, was it not hoarding they resorted to ? They were inflicting pains on people because they wanted to make huge profits. How can locally produced rice cost more than imported one and you want government to fold its arms and continue watching? Many of Nigerian farmers are greedy

If it doesn’t drop to 20,000 Naira, then it has not dropped. Stop glorifying nonsense.

Meanwhile, I stand with JAGABAN. If JAGABAN cannot do it, then it isn’t Peter Obi, Atiku, Rotimi Amaechi, El-Rufai, Aregbesola or Goodluck Jonathan that can do it.

Rice is not 70k, I just bought 1 at 55k. A moderate family will eat that for 2months even if they are wasteful.

If you want the price to come down to 20k hope you are equally ready to drop the service or the product you sell by 500%

Your income has increased by over 300% but you want those in rice business not to make gain from their business, that type of selfish mentality is what many of you carry into business and eventually kill the business, because you are too narrow to understand that the price of a product is the aggregate cost of other input and the purchasing power of the consumer.

It's not only in Lagos state but nationwide.

At least, herdsmen attack in Southern region have reduced drastically while the government has been providing empowerment program for our farmers

A bag of rice selling at a price equivalent to minimum wage is absurd.

A Nigerian soldier told me he earned N36,000 per month in 2014, and bought 4 bags of rice from his town at N7,000 each and still got N8,000 to run expenses for the month but today, he is paid N90,000 and he can only afford a bag of rice. Na so, I begin to pity them.

Justice for military cadets.

Smuggling is doing wonders
Buhari did us dirty by curbing smuggling without an alternative. Man treated Nigerians like animals in a zoo.
Zombies were hailing him then calling some who disagreed with his methods wailer or smuggler
Today they are praising Tinubu for opening the border to smuggling and bringing Dende back to business
Zombies are daft!!

Nigerian farmers are not the problem
The problem is the sycophants in APC who went to convince Buhari that we have more than enough rice in Nigeria but Nigerians are too addicted to foreign rice to embrace the local one
APC sycophants are demons in human form. They praised him for locking the border only to curse him for wrecking the economy

Why not just tell the people to face the reality than using the media to gaslight the people into believing that price of commodities has crashed.
We that r in the southern regions, we still buying rice at a costly price.
Does Nigeria start n ends in lagos, that they use lagos as a determinant price crash state?

I still remember when i posted on this platform that the insecurity bedeviling the country is going to cause serious issues in the food security of the country.
Almost all the agro communities and states r affected by banditry...
Instead of the govt to tackle this issue, they r doing cosmetic and window dressing of the issue.

Can we feed ourselves, of course we can.
But r we feeding ourselves, The answer is No.
