Seriously, when you lose either or both parent that is when you will know the world is wide they're certain things they'll not tell you but you'll absent yourself from them.

This is exactly how you feel when you grow into adulthood without leaving your adolescence behind.

During adolescence, everyone feels like the actions and words of our parents were always overbearing.

The moment we enter adulthood, we see beyond the screens of childishness and appreciate every one of those moments as love.

Don't be surprised, the things that these children may have experienced from that their 'parents,' may not be up to 1/5 of what we experienced. But we still love our parents and wil continue loving them till our last days.

It does not work that way.

I have an uncle who failed his children. As a civil servant with the state government, he bought a car.

Yet, his first born is a stark illiterate. One was a scavenger in Lagos. We all thought he was dead. One is an itinerant schizophrenic. Another one is heavy drug user. The only one in the family with any hope is the last daughter who has a kid in university. She want s all her 4 kids to b e very successful. Meanwhile, she is married to a good for nothing man who is always haggard looking.

Despite this, their dad felt entitled to the children's money. He expected them to give him money.

He is late now. He was staying with his eldest son and then disappeared. His soon claimed he was suffering from dementia and went out and never returned.

I suspect he died in his son's house and the man just dug a pit and buried the man there.

Should his illiterate son celebrate his death with a huge party?

This is more common than you think. I even think those that do not have resentment for their parents are minority. Most families are not healthy. I repeat, most families are dysfunction.

If the family is from Nigeria, then the chance of dysfunction is not just high, but very high.

You probably will find it easy to forgive your parents when you become a parent yourself. Your parent grew up in the worse geographical region that have been looted for centuries, where illiteracy, poverty, voodoo, and all kinds of evil thrive freely.

Your parent probably have beef with their parent as well, but they hid it well from you, since they are committed to undo the trauma from the past.

The past is connected to the future. For a people that have been subjected to all kind of abuse for centuries from both internal and external exploiters, you cant expect things to just be fine. On an individual level, you can undo the past, but from a national level, even in a continental level, Africa is really under heavy bitterness.

What you can do right now is to move on. Forgive your parents and make sure your kids do not have resentment towards you. Let see if you will do a better job.

Because it is easier to point fingers at others, to sit at the throne of a judge, but if the table turn round, we might fall short of our own judgement.

2. Everyone, including good parents, makes mistakes. Bad parents go a step beyond making mistakes. Not only do they reject every opportunity to learn from them to become better parents, but many also go a step beyond to pour all of their regrets on those kids whenever possible.

Being “good” alone doesn’t automatically make someone a good parent. Parenting is more like mentoring — and you mentor people based on your own principles, right?

So what happens when the child you’re trying to mentor doesn’t agree with those principles? Does that suddenly make you a bad parent?

You’re still not getting my point — your “right” or “good” might not mean the same thing to me.

Boko Haram and even some politicians believe they’re doing what’s right because, in their minds, they have a “good cause.” The people under them don’t question it either because that’s what they’ve been taught to see as normal.

It’s the same thing with parenting — people act from what they believe is right, even if it doesn’t look right to someone else.

So most often, I won’t want to blame parents 💯, until I understand certain things about them. The resources, their growing up, their mentality, their understanding of life. It takes a lot to be a parent, and while still grooming your child, you are still learning.
