What I Noticed About Gen Z by RollinTNDA(op): 1:12pm On Nov 30, 2025
As someone born in early 90's I have always kept my distance from gen z people.

Here is why

I noticed that the moment you try to reason with them. They immediately think you are there mate. Respect flies out the window

During my time, I related with my seniors abd never felt like I was in their level.
But these gen z ppl the moment you try to hang out or chit chat the next thing they begin to treat you like you are age mates.

Both girls and guys.
Am I the only one who noticed this?

You're not alone in this bro..

Even during my time as a Keke rider,I always try as much as possible to avoid them...cuz they are very insultive and abusive..... Especially if you meet the ones who are into fraud......Bro,you go just tire for life....

I checked what Gen Z was. Found it described as people born between 1997-2012, and I laughed, because Gen Me would say what you said about every generation after me, and I'm certain Gen Before Me would say the same about my generation.

Seun needs to introduce a hierarchy thing here so people can know their levels. It however can not be age, since age (or gender or tribe or religion etc) are owed no respect if nonsense is spoken or no respect given, even to those younger than one.

Well duh! Thankfully, this generation are much less traumatized than the generations before them, which is why they can better relate like humans with people of even older generations, unlike past generations that immediately switched into some gods vs slaves mode when older individuals were involved— due to abuse inflicted on them under the guise of instilling discipline in them. 🤔 🤔

2. Why else would you want to hang around and chat with them? No be so they treat you like one of their own? Or are one of dem old men out there looking for kids to worship them since they failed to get their peers to do the same? undecided

Seun needs to tag those who have been here for the past 10yrs to 15yrs, 5yrs to 9yrs, 1- 2yrs
So that we old members will have some respect here

Its odd he does not see the benefit of hierarchy of some sort, though it has its pitfalls too.

This is why I wouldn't agree that seun use age as his hierarchy determinant, as it does not imply wisdom.

In fact, hierarchy itself does not imply wisdom, and should just be a thing of vanity, and not a thing to respect.

"Older people opinion" should not be respected just because they are older, is what I'm saying.

If I am older than you and my opinion is nonsense, you should not respect my opinion. And if I am older than you and you talk sense (or even nonsense), I should respect you even if I do not respect your opinion.

I should respect you regardless of your age, since I can respectfully disagree with your opinion. I after all should respect my own children though I am much older than them and they sometimes talk nonsense.

1993 when the election was held and today is 32 years. That's no small feat. We've been using that to tell Atiku to calm down. Except you are a late Gen X or early Millennial, then you are here with your grandkids.

@ Topic, what I see is that there has been a collapse of parenting and this is the result we are seeing. Who are their parents? They true to embrace gentle parenting, it's the gentlemen and women you are now seeing today.

You are clearly not a Nigerian.

98% of Nigerian parents demand absolute respect and obidence. When you disagree with them it is labeled as insult or disrespect.

I have seen my boss been commanded by his father and this man is grown with kids.
I have heard his father call him a fool Infront of us all.. grin grin
African parents don't give a sh** if you grown they still see you as a kid in their eyes

What you are describing as absolute respect is more fear than anything else. And perhaps I'm just the 2% you left out.

Nigerian parents can, or rather, do definitely demand absolute respect from their children, but that's no guarantee they'll get it. But I'm not your parent, so, despite the probable fact that I am likely to be twice your age, I'm very certain you will disrespect me if I don't respect myself and disrespect you. You after all are a human being who deserves respect, so why should my age give me license to disrespect you?

Perhaps those Nigerian parents you mention need to learn to respect their children. Because, those children learn from what they see their parents do, and if they show disrespect to their children that's what their children will learn to do to others.

My African Nigerian parents respect me their child, so I have learnt as well as I can to respect others regardless of their age, gender, color, wealth, etc., unless they show they don't deserve it, then gloves off.

P.s. I have commented on Nairaland like 40k times, so you can read my post history and share or quote the ones where I have been disrespectful to see if I walk my talk, at least more than I don't, and where I haven't, if it is deserved.

Those Gen z are just in their own world.
If you don't know how to deal with them. Just leave them. Them greet or no greet you leave them except only when they overstepped their boundary

That's because the respect system thrives on the ability of parents to traumatize their children. All that so-called discipline that you gain in childhood in Nigerian homes is usually through the use of abuse. And all that trauma is what causes children to remain subdued even into adulthood by their parents and others in the community who may have inflicted similar abuse on them during their formative years. undecided

What you have in Nigeria is not respect or discipline but trauma-enforced cowering. undecided

I, formerly traumatized, have, over the years, sought help and healing from my childhood traumas, and no longer have parents (my parents have had to adjust themselves and learn to accord the family the respect deserved) who would speak to me in the same manner that your boss's parents talk to him. That equally means I will not stand for jackshit from any other so-called elders out there. undecided

Hope isn't lost on those who wish to do away with the brainwashing. They simply need to want to redeem themselves from all of their childhood trauma, cloaked in tradition. undecided

maybe that is what we are missing.
That is why nudity and depravity has multiplied Because kids no longer get disciplined like before.
See te level of shameless people on TikTok and Onlyfans. If they had parents like old parents not these woke mumu new age parents that don't discipline their kids

Not that I agree with OP
But let's say the honest truth

Respect=Fear

You respect fire because you know once you touch it you get burned. The fear you have for fire is in the respect.

You respect a lion, you fear a lion
If a lion was soft without teeth you won't fear and give it the respect it deserves.

When you fear something You respect it
You don't go about touching naked wire
Because you fear and respect electricity

Your ancestors walked around literally nude and depravity and lynchings. That was literally the culture for the longest --- before the white man showed up. So, let's get things straight, abeg! 🥱🥱🥱

2. Kids still get no real discipline, the same as those before them --- even your grandfathers, and fathers are all indisciplined and corrupt entities to date, so don't even pretend they are better in any way. However, the brainwashing culture of old, which hides its evils behind words like discipline, continues, but fortunately, kids now have the Internet to know what is real from all the bullsheet of old. 🥱🥱

Others are advancing and evolving.
You are going backwards to the ways of your ancestors by walking nude.
You should go back to fetching water from river to drink since your ancestors didn't have borehole water or GP tank.

Also stop using phones as your ancestors didn't use phones to communicate.

Well, nudity is not now, or has it ever been, the problem of life and living in Nigeria? I pointed out the fact that nudity has existed from the time of your ancestors to get you to begin reasoning in the right direction. Our nudity back then was not considered a problem in society, and we still have no reason to consider it a problem today, since it is not considered a criminal offence. 🥱🥱

The high levels of crime, both at the grassroots and national levels, coupled with a culture of general disrespect for the law and the lives of the citizens, have always been the only problems. undecided

2. To this day, over 90% of the country still depend on fetching water from unhygienic water sources. So, what in the world are you on about? 🥱🥱

3. Yes, keep deflecting... that is typical! undecided

I respectfully think you should spend some time researching those two words, "respect" and "fear", because, while I am fully aware the two are conflated, especially in our Nigerian culture, the two words do not mean the same thing.

I respect my children, does obviously not mean I fear my children, and being afraid of a lion does not mean I respect the lion that I fear.

In fact, you may respect me in our conversation in this thread, but I very much doubt you fear or are afraid of me, since you very well know that there is absolutely nothing I can do to you to make you fear me. I hope.

If you respect someone or something because you fear that thing or person, you will not respect them when they become powerless over you and can no more do to you what you feared they might do.
