Let’s talk LAW + MARRIAGE + NIGERIA
Because a lot of people are LOUDLY wrong on this issue.

FACT: A woman in Nigeria can KEEP her husband’s surname even AFTER DIVORCE.
Yes. After divorce. Even if the man is crying.

The law is VERY clear.

CASE LAW DON TALK:
• Ayeni v. Afolabi – Court said a woman can answer ANY NAME she likes. Nobody fit force her to change am unless she dey use am to do fraud.
• Cowley v. Cowley (UK) – Court said NAME NO BE PROPERTY. You can’t own a name. You can’t stop anybody from using it unless there’s malice or deception.

Translation for the streets:
There is NO LAW in Nigeria that says:
❌ “After divorce you must drop his name”
❌ “Your ex-husband can force you to change surname”

That law DOES NOT EXIST.

Now hear this plot twist

Mr. Bulaba divorces his wife.
Later he remarries.

New wife becomes Mrs. Bulaba
Old wife? She can STILL remain Mrs. Bulaba

Shock incoming
Both women can even be called CHIOMA BULABA
And legally?
The man can do NOTHING about it.

As long as:
✔️ No fraud
✔️ No impersonation
✔️ No criminal intention

The law PROTECTS her.
