Good day Nairalanders,

What is the light situation in your area, just as the heading suggests.

In my office 🏬 Lekki phase1, light has been very bad, since last month, despite the fact that we are on Band A, we have been solely relying on generator from morning till night.

In my house at around Obalende, infact that one os worst, sometimes, I stay in the office late, so that once I enter house, just take my bath and sleep straight..

The most painful part is that, my inlaw who is from Oyo state are complaing bitterly that light might not even come for 2-3 month and when it does, it won't last more than 4hours and its gone..

We have a minister who is from Oyo state and can't even manage just a ministry and want to govern a whole state.

The light is really giving me a concern, mostly this festive period that alot of expenses is there, you will still be thinking of powering generator with high rate of fuel to welcome visitors..
Mine is like 16-18 hrs. In ikenegbu owerri

It's not only in his area. Even here in Yaba, it's been bad for some few months now. Last month, we didn't have it for one week at a stretch. People are not talking because insecurity seems to have overshadowed everything else. Light under Buhari was a lot better, I wonder what happened between then and now.
The worst thing is that there's no news whatsoever about why the light is erratic. Gosh!

Even here at akobo in Ibadan. Our light is one of the best in Ibadan but now, it's epileptic. In a day, they might on it for just 10 mins. Later, I read it from ibedc that the issue is from national grid. The supply of electricity to some states under ibedc is just too low and that is the cause. They assure that they are working with the distribution company to increase the supply. I just pray it will not be like this for long.

Extremely poor!!!

I live on the Arapaja axis of Ibadan, Oluyole Local Government, and the power supply here is far worse than anyone should reasonably endure. Over 60% of residents in this neighbourhood now rely on solar or inverter systems. In my own case, I had to upgrade my inverter capacity in November just to power more appliances and get longer hours of electricity.

I visited the Agbowo area today, where residents lamented that electricity used to be very reliable, something I can personally attest to. However, since around June this year, supply has deteriorated to the point of embarrassment. While electricity appears stable in a few selected areas in Ibadan, one must ask: why should access to power be selective? I have not even consumed up to fifteen thousand naira (₦15,000) worth of electricity in my fully equipped three-bedroom apartment in the entire year 2025, an indication of just how terrible the power supply has been.

If a state represented by the current Minister of Power can suffer this level of neglect, especially a state he aspires to govern, then it would be deeply misguided for the people of Oyo State to entrust such leadership with the governorship. Although I may have a soft spot for the APC, it is certainly not unconditional. God forbid that Adelabu becomes our governor.
This was exactly what I was discussing with someone few hours ago. Penkelemesi cannot become Oyo state governor. God will not even allow it to happen. I reside in Ibadan and the light issue have been a terrible headache. A state you aspire to govern and as a minister of power does not have light. Ha, it is terrible. Two weeks now, I have not set eyes on light.

Really? I was thinking it was only here in Osogbo. Sometimes, we barely have up to 4 hours of electricity in our own part of the town. Even the Band A people are no longer enjoying electricity as much as before.

Well, when PDP was in power, the power supply was bad...and then GEJ privatised power in 2013, which ended government responsibility for improving generation and distribution...just transmission.

The main issue is, power companies cannot charge cost reflective tarrifs for most nigerians. And before privatisation, that was the same problem NEPA had, plus from 1980 onward, every governor was connecting villages and cities to the grid, without thinking about how they will pay for the thing.

I am disagreeing with you not because I support tinubu, I effing don;t, but because our power supply problems have more to do with nigerians not paying cost reflective tarrifs for decades. And this has become more important since privatization

Also, many of you act as if there has been no privatization, as if government is still doing NEPA. They ain't.

In Ivory coast, they don't have blackouts...since 1990, not because they have better government (the instability in Ivory coast since 1990 is worse than the benign peace of Houphouet -Boigny before he died.)...but because they decided to implement cost reflective tarrifs. This allowed investment into the sector to flow in, heck the World Bank even gave them a loan self...and there have been no blackouts for decades. Only folk who were born before 1985 recall blackouts. Again Ivory coast has AND still has corruption, tribalism(even xenophobia!), a civil war, and a millitary and civillian coup, and another sit tight leader called Ouattara...yet power is stable there compared to nigeria, because cost reflective tarrifs.

Whereas we in nigeria will blame every leader, blame corruption, blame this , blame that...but then bypass our meter, or underpay for power used, and then expect power to come on for 24 hours a day, seven days a week...on what money? Imaginary money? And of course no investment. Even the discos...three of them were handed over to the banks, and they are cutting jobs to survive because people don';t want to pay cost reflective tarrifs.

You all want free electricity, yet you don;t want to accept it costs money.

Tinubu is a bad president, like his predecessors, but on power, make we face some home truths, even tinubu is dodging paying for light by switching to solar. That;s a loss in revenue.
Talk true. Was it half this bad during Jonathan's administration?

No power since 5:00am till now.

We were told removal of electricity subsidy will solve all these problems, but this government is a lying piece of shit.

The electricity mafia in Nigeria will never allow the country to have stable power supply. This people are making huge profits it's a market. I recently get to see the house of the NEPA boss in my area. All I can say is The country is doomed for failure

So how is it working in Aba? People should study the blue print of what Geometric is doing in Aba. My family resides in ogbor hill area and the light doesn't go out in that area at all, It can only go out for like 5 minutes in 3days and it's back immediately so people there enjoy 24 7 light.

Tinubu is to blame
I score Tinubu a solid 1 out of 100😒

Tinubu's capacity for shege is limitless.

Yes the Minister of power is very useless and incompetent, but Tinubu appointed him and has allowed him to remain in the job despite the man not performing from day one.

Tinubu wants us to suffer, it is that simple.

If you see they way Ghana who themselved do not have stable light, are mocking Nigeria because they learnt how terrible our light situation is.
They even use our failure to qualify for World Cup football join; Saying they "..would love knowing Nigerians would be home watching Ghana play World Cup, but Nigeria got no electricity." 😏

Upwards of three days of power outage. How we lack shame as a people just beats me. We are awash with gas used to fire turbines to produce electricity yet we do not have electricity in Nigeria! Simply befuddling!🤔

Technocrats heading ministries look for ways of making things work, using best practices to initiate and implement tech based knowledge.
They are keen to overcome challenges that may smear their image.
But politicians, the only thing they are good are is fraud, thieving and money laundering.
The government should continue to reward cronies and journeyman politicians with critical and vital offices, after all the people are too used to bad governance
