The problem is not the buying of potential but buying players with OBVIOUS irredeemable flaws.

It is either the scouts of the technical people sanctioning the deals. Or it could be both. They need to do better with player evaluation and take talent ID.

Ugarte and to a lesser extent Dorgu have flaws that can’t be fixed. Obvious to anyone who spent time to study them but we somehow missed it.

PSG tossed Ugarte out after 1 season but watch how we will keep him for 3-4 seasons while he keeps stinking up the joint.

And I agree that we have academy players that will do a better job.
