Compliments of the season to this great house.

A while back, I made an inquiry about giving my car to a friend to use on the Uber platform while I was at work, with the hope of netting ₦400,000 as profit, which we would split equally on a monthly basis.

Unfortunately, he travelled for a different assignment, and we had to put the plan on hold until he returns in January 2026.

However, I came back to my home city (Benin city) o celebrate the festive period with friends and family and have been around for over two weeks now. I do not know how to stay idle for long, so I decided to register my car on Uber, Bolt, and inDrive to test the waters by myself.

I was accepted on all three platforms upon registration, I did not do any physical assessment whatsoever, quite strange though.
I turned on my Uber app the next day (a thursday) with excitement and waited for hours in Benin City without a single ride request. After a few hours, I decided to drive around GRA(gapiona, ugbor, ihama and so on), popular spots, and campuses, yet not a single ride came in. It was quite a shock.

The next day, I tried again with Uber and experienced the same thing. On that second day, Bolt approved my account. The moment I went online on Bolt at around 1pm, I got my first request immediately. I still left Uber turned on. I also checked inDrive, but the prices were extremely low on Indrive. Each time I tried to negotiate, the passengers declined my price. I mean, how do you book a 15 km journey for ₦3,000 and still refuse to negotiate? Indrive's negotiation is pegged, you can't go above a certain threshold, usually one cannot go 20% higher than what the passenger put in there, not many will obviously understand what it would cost to move from a certain location to another, they need to review their model, I think.

On my first day using Bolt, which was a Friday, I worked from 1 pm to 10 pm and made a total of ₦61,000 from about 10 trips. After Bolt’s deductions, I was left with ₦48,000. I spent roughly ₦19,000 on fuel, leaving me with about ₦30,000 profit.

The next day, I worked only in the evening from 4 pm to about 11 pm. I made around ₦37,000. After Bolt’s deductions, I received ₦29,000. I spent ₦10,000 on fuel and was left with about ₦19,000 profit.

I did not use the app again for about a five days, I had a presentation and virtual meetings in between from work. I came back immediately I was done with all that last last weekend, and continued my on and off, today, I decided to do full time - from 8AM to 6PM, greed forced me to go till 9pm, , I sha made ₦77,000. Bolt deducted about ₦14,000, and I spent roughly ₦20,000 on fuel, leaving me with about ₦43,000 profit.

My takeaway from this experience is that the job is extremely time consuming and stressful, una dey try abeg.... There is also a significant level of disrespect from some passengers. One passenger threatened to cancel the trip and report me to Bolt if I did not come down to help her load Christmas gifts into my car. I politely declined, and she was furious, but we moved on. As we were going some yahoo boys in a bid to avoid getting searched by police reversed with full force as my car was behind theirs, they ended up hitting my bumper and driver headlight, I spent 20k to fix the damage, but it was quite painful, i wanted to chase after them, but I relaxed sha. The said lady was now apologizing all through our, cos na she force me to pass that route in the first place, her pride turned into instant pity for me. We move sha

At multiple occasions, passengers turned me into their personal driver. One lady in particular, made me her stop and go driver, stopping multiple times to shop for Christmas items. In the end, she paid exactly what Bolt calculated, with no additional compensation for the wasted time. They all did this too, no compensation for time wasted from them or bolt

The male passengers were generally very cool, with mutual respect on both sides. Many female passengers, on the other hand, were quite disrespectful and condescending. If you have a rigid ego, it is difficult to handle e hailing as a partner driver.

On the bright side, you get to connect with people on the street and see the world from a very different perspective. I carried some high profile individuals I would never have met otherwise.

Driving on Bolt Comfort pays significantly more, The additional fuel consumption from using air conditioning is balanced by better earnings, making it a more lucrative option. On bolt comfort, the passengers are saner and more respectful too.

There were several occasions where I was stuck in traffic, yet Bolt did not adjust the fare to compensate for the time spent.

In total, within just two weeks on and off, I made over ₦300,000 net fueling was around 100k or there about

My question is this: why is Uber not operational in Benin City? Or is this how it is too in Lagos?

With these earnings, I am now contemplating quitting my job and focusing all my energy on this when I return to Lagos, while also building my own company on the side as well, he be like I am ready to comot hand for 9-5 sha.
let me help you further before you quit your Job.
You earning monthly will be in the range of 600k this a gross earnings
You have to subtract depreciation of the car per month Which is around 70k for a 8m car
Service 30k
Tyre 20k
Insurance
Parts / maintance 30k
Total 150k -600k
Balance is 450k .
Then you pay yourself salary =200k
Profit remain 250k .
In you Job you are the asset generating money
In E hailing run the car is the assets and you are the Human asset .

Understand this clearly.....

And this is what I got after reporting. This Indrive is total rubbish. All their support staff are Indians who don't understand the Nigeria market.

I uninstalled Indrive and installed it back yet they wouldn't let me create or even log in with another phone number on the same device.

Please, anyone knows how I can get around this
My question to you is why you report yourself? What was the aim?

I appreciate your comment and advice my oga

Yes that's true, because this is a peak period, I may not be seeing the true state of how the whole system works and how it profits her partners. I will observe using the January and February window(my 9 to 5 nor go gree me do this sha - I leave my house as early as 6Am and I get back home around 8pm, maybe rather than go home by 5 I will just enter from there, I doubt if I'll be able to do anything meaningful between 5 to 11pm

One other reason I am considering quitting is because I believe, and I know, that I could have doubled these earnings if I were playing on Lagos turf.

However, let me see how it goes in the coming weeks. I will keep you all updated here.

Over the last few months, I have been contemplating quitting my job for my side hustle (startup), which I have been managing alongside my job for one year now. I just need a small source of income to keep my family and me afloat while I continue to build my startup. I could possibly even connect with clients while using Uber, Bolt, or indrive if their riders head correct sha for Lagos

This is why the idea of my friend using my car for Bolt was another option I accepted, but his body language lately has been somewhat concerning.

Na God get power in the end
What kind of car do you drive?

I hope we learn a lesson from this driver-rider altercation. This isn't the first time issues like this would pop up here and most support the driver, even when he is in the wrong (NOT SAYING THIS ONE IS IN THE WRONG O)

How a driver manages situations is very very critical. Beyond your driving skill, your temperament, diplomacy and conflict management/resolution is the next most essential skill.

Knowing you have a lot more to lose should be uppermost on your mind after safety. And I'm not only talking about issues with riders, other road users too. I remember one uber Suzuki guy trying to force himself into my front one day, I held my ground and after trying repeatedly the guy just brushed my car pulling off my front bumper and carried on like say nothing happen. Na me gats begin sort myself. Time and energy wasted, thankfully no monetary cost. Similar scenarios have happened to me like 5 times, some costing money in repairs.
These are situations I could have avoided but I was standing on my right, and guess what, I was even more upset than I would have been if I'd just let the mad people go.

Like someone said, you can't control other people's actions, only your's. In the long run a lot of these things that get our veins strung out don't really matter not on the other hand, look at the outcome here. A potential 5k loss has become a loss of a whole line of earnings while the girl is out there maybe looking for the next victim.

Let's be wise in our dealings, simple.

Also, guys, put a dashcam in your car and make sure it is visible to everyone, rider and police alike. E dey reduce problem.
I feel you 100% on the bolded.

The lady's only argument is that the trip is reading 0.00 because I wasn't taking her to her right destination which you and I know very well that it's a lie and that's what triggered me in all of this.

This is what we would have settled in the car but just watch and see how she just started shouting immediately she cancelled the ride.
The girl is definitely a scammer she knew what she was doing but indriver shouldn’t allow rider cancel trip that is ongoing huh

You no get her phone number make boys help you greet her merry Christmashuh

If 7m is all you have home and abroad, not advisable. But if you have 10m and above, no problem. The car is very good and strong.

If 7m is all you got, I will advise spending 4 to 5m getting a car(you should get a good car for that amount)and use 2m as emergency funds.

I love your advice, so thoughtful. Reason why I'm considering buying the car is because it's direct foreign, 4 to 5m can only get me a Nigeria used car and I'm avoiding Nigeria used because of hidden undeclared problems that mostly come with Nigeria used car. Car are too expensive now this Big daddy is the only Tokunbo car I've seen so far with a reasonable price, a dealer is even selling the same car for 9million( ahh where are we going in this country? )

Some foreign used cars still needs small tune up here and there to get it to shape. Besides, you still need extra money for unseen circumstances. Not always advisable to go all in to purchase a car, that's if the 7m is all you got.

At the end of the day, nothing beats a foreign used car, just don't go all in.

Thank I grab your point, not putting all eggs in a basket. All I just want to know is the reliability of the mentioned brand of Toyota.

Not everyone is inclined to this japa shit, I have a project I'm working on that does not in anyway align with traveling for a greener pasture, I've already layed the project structure I only need side income stream to generate more fund to finance the project.

Everyone can japa base on their mindset, I'm seeing a golden opportunity in a country where most of my peers consider a deserted country.

If I can raise 7m for a car in this country I see no reason to japa to start from scratch in the a name of greener pasture. The land is greener here, it's just unfortunate that only few can see it.

U don't need a sign post to tell u that u are driving one-way on a dual carriage way. The last time I went to that Elegushi beach, I had to go and turn at a very far point to come back. Going back to VI too was same thing. People were passing one-way but I refused. Instead of passing one-way, I rather stay away from that axis and since then I haven't gone to that place again. For two years I have gone to Elegushi beach only twice.
If u put yourself in a situation to be extorted, u shouldn't complain when the chickens come home to roost.

I don't expect this type of reply to his comment at all. The road is still under construction, and cars has been passing either way to get to there destination since there is no clear path yet for people to be taking but all of a sudden they just wake up one day and started arresting people for one way without any warnings or signs isn't that absurd to you?

No Sir, right now the road is open both lanes.
No obstruction, no blockade From Ogombo, Sangotedo to Ahmad Bello, VI. To and Fro.
Anyone still playing one way on that road is irresponsible. They will cause the road to be blocked and innocent u will regret passing the road. Or cause a serious accident and an innocent oncoming vehicle will have his car right off or lose his life.
When some parts where blocked it was understandable. Right now there is a clear path with turning at specific points, cross overs and U turns to your destination.
The only reason anyone will pass one way is irresponsibility and lack of patience.
U can't justify passing one-way on third mainland bridge just because the next available turn is far. Same thing applies here.
