Nigeria’s Honey Queen Sets Ambitious Production Targets of 5 Tonnes in 2026, Eyes 20 Tonnes by 2030

Maryam Mahmud, Zoology graduate from the University of Ilorin and Executive Director of Honeyz Depot, the state’s largest honey distributor and operator of Kwara’s only exclusive walk in honey store has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the company’s honey production operations.

Beyond her executive role, Maryam is also the lead beekeeper, directly managing the production line and ensuring quality at every stage.

Honeyz Depot, which has dominated honey distribution in Kwara State for the past five years, began its honey production line three years ago and is now set to go semi-commercial, targeting 5 tonnes of honey by 2026, with a long term goal of scaling up to 20 tonnes annually by 2030.

Nigeria’s honey market is valued at approximately USD 63.21 million (2024), with demand rising across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care sectors. Yet, the country produces less than 10% of its annual honey consumption, creating a large import gap and costing the economy over $2 billion annually in imports.

Speaking on the expansion, Maryam said, “Our walk in store, before temporary shutdown and distribution network have shown the growing demand for quality honey. Now, we are taking the next step, controlling production, ensuring traceability, and scaling responsibly to meet rising market demand.”

Maryam stated that, Honeyz Depot’s production roadmap will combine owned anchor apiaries with a structured outgrower beekeeper network, designed to maintain quality, expand supply, and reduce import dependency. The initiative is expected to create jobs, support rural livelihoods, strengthen pollination services, and foster sustainable growth, not just further solidifying Honeyz Depot’s leadership in Kwara State’s honey market, but also across Nigeria.

That’s a bold goal. I doubt they can meet it. My problem with honey is I touch it once then never again. I always give out bottles I buy.

The woman is a zoology graduate. That means she has enough knowledge of the ways of the bees.

This is an example of someone putting her knowledge to good use. Putting her degree to good use.

And someone was saying that zoology na useless course. Okay o.

Hope no be Adulterated like most of her colleagues in the industry...

Just saying

Because that is the reason I stop buying and consuming honey,

Even though I used to love it a lot.

I even stop my people for bringing me the one given me for free because I noticed it was Adulterated.

The same reason I suspended my consumption of palm wine for the time being.

There are a lot of good honey producers in nigeria. Look for them.

Dont use a few bad examples to diss everyone.

And the woman is a zoology graduate. She knows what she is doing.

Greed transcends degree, knowledge and wealth.

And it is one of the things ruining this country.

The people killing and looting our resources are mostly graduates, learned and wealthy.

I once watched a honey documentary and in it, an expert on the global honey economy remarked that there are not enough bees alive to make all the honey being sold in the market. You see, the problem is not of resolve, but that it may simply be impossible to reach such a target, unless the "honey" that she plans to manufacture is fake, which is a whole nother story.

Why are you not leading an advocacy for better NAFDAC as well as state and local government controls of the value chain in both products, instead of simply giving up what you love?

But honey is actually sweeter than sugar. It has nothing to do with differences in individual taste buds.

I actually waybill palm oil from my local village faraway in another state,

The local palm oil here foams like detergent when cooking with it, with a distinct smell, so I stopped.

And before I waybill the palm oil, I give stringent conditions, including the adverse effects of Adulterated palm oil to my parents and the seller, with threats of not patronizing her again...

While I haven't noticed anything unusual, I am always examining the oil whenever I cooked with it...

I don't eat Groundnut oil,
So, it is palm oil for everything I do.

Ya, kudos to her.

I really appreciate her effort and resourcefulness

But honey, Palm wine, Palm oil... matter for this country is crazy lately.

Until I can attest their originality, I will stay away.

I am indulging Palm oil because it is a necessity in my kitchen, and I try to take every necessary step to make sure I am buying at least something close to original, if not original. embarassed

It is true. Honey is sweeter than sugar; honey is higher in fructose compared to glucose, which is why it is the preferred sweetener used by food companies. A spoon of honey goes a long way more than a spoon of sugar would.😐😐

I know how to identify fake honey, but how do you normally identify adulterated honey?

Bee keeper or just Honey producer, not manufacturer
Re: Nigeria’s Honey Manufacturer, Maryam Mahmud eye 20 Tonnes by 2030 by wellmax(m): 5:21pm On Aug 26
This is what graduates should do.
Identify a need. Think of the solution and act on it.

Imagine Nigeria producing only 10% of honey needs.

And we can produce, starting doesn’t even need much capital
