🇺🇸 Two pilots have died after their helicopters collided mid-air on Sunday above a city in New Jersey, police said.

Hammonton Police identified the pilots as Kenneth L Kirsch, 65, and Michael Greenberg, 71, both of New Jersey, according to BBC news partner CBS.

Only the pilots were on board each aircraft, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement, adding there would be a federal investigation into what led to the collision.

Hammonton is about 35 miles (56km) south-east of Philadelphia, Pennsyvlania, just off the Atlantic City Expressway.

Police on Sunday reported that one of the helicopters was engulfed in flames by the time it crash landed on the ground, and emergency services were working to extinguish the fire.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the crash involved a Enstrom 280C helicopter and a Enstrom F-28A helicopter and happened at around 11:25 EST (16:25 GMT).

Both helicopters are lightweight aircraft that typically hold three people or fewer.

Had this rather unfortunate circus taken place in Nigeria, our ever-reliable seasonal patriots, those who loathe the country with Olympic-level enthusiasm, would have turned it into a blockbuster documentary on “Why Nigeria Is a Failed State.” They would have beaten the tragedy like a talking drum, using barbaric exaggeration to market their usual narrative of doom.

But, it happened in their so-called heaven on earth. Suddenly, the same tongues that drip acid now ooze sympathy. They will console the country, mourn politely, and, through some truly acrobatic mental gymnastics, still find a way to blame Tinubu. Talent like that deserves a Nobel Prize in selective outrage.

In any case, they should by now understand one immutable law of Nigerian political reality, none of their candidates is getting anywhere near the seat of power. Not close. Not remotely. Not even with binoculars.
