“today Is My Wedding, But I Ran Away” — Nigerian Woman Sparks Online Debate by eyesoflagos(op): 8:09am On Jan 12

A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread debate on social media after revealing that she deliberately skipped her own wedding, citing emotional distress and family pressure as reasons for her decision. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The woman, identified as a TikTok user @adetutuifemi, shared a video explaining that although her wedding was scheduled for the day of the post, she chose not to attend the ceremony. According to her, the relationship with her fiancé had been unstable, as he had previously ended the relationship before later returning to seek reconciliation.

In the viral video, she said:

“Today is my wedding, but I did not go to the wedding. He broke up with me and later came back to beg. We did an introduction because my family asked me to bring a man.”

She explained that despite proceeding with the traditional introduction ceremony due to family insistence, she was never fully convinced about getting married. On the wedding day, she reportedly left Lagos for Kaduna, choosing her emotional well-being over societal and familial expectations.

The woman also offered advice to others searching for a life partner, urging them to “find him in Lagos,” a statement that further fueled conversations online.

The video has attracted mixed reactions from social media users. While many praised her courage for prioritising her peace of mind, others criticised the families involved for allegedly pressuring the couple into marriage.

One commenter wrote, “It is better to cancel a wedding than to enter a marriage filled with regret.”

The incident has reignited conversations around the pressure many women face to marry despite emotional uncertainty, highlighting the growing call for personal choice and emotional readiness in marital decisions.

Apart from the fact that she allowed the young man to waste his money on preparing for a wedding ceremony that was likely not to exceed beyond lintel level,I don't think it's a wise idea for anyone to choose societal pressure over his/her own peace of mind..

But then,I don't completely believe this story......There must be an ex who's unwilling to let go..

Where there's no investment there's no risk. That's why it easy for her to walk away. If she was expected to make financial contributions towards the marriage ceremony she would have open up to the man that the marriage will not work so no need to waste money.

I find her actions incredibly childish, because she knew well before the wedding that she didn’t want to marry him, but she waited until the last minute to make that known. I think she wasted many people’s precious time and resources.

Before ever you agree to get married, you must have done some serious soul searching and be very matured in reasoning not in age.
Maturity in age is way different from maturity in thinking.
She is not matured at all.
Forget about her trying to have her peace of mind or choosing emotional wellbeing over societal or familial expectations.
No one sits down to agree to a marriage without taking many factors into consideration.
Firstly we are Africans, our marriage lives involves families, whether you like it or not.
Of course marriage is between two individuals but in this part of the world, it is a union of two different families with their extended members.
Before ever you make any marriage commitments, think very well.
These later generations that thinks anything goes as they wish are really making monumental mistakes.
Marriage is spiritual and has laid down long time foundational rules and guides.
Overlook those rules and guides, the marriages do not last.
Marriage is not boy-girl relationship or friendship.
It is way beyond that.
It needs maturity.
You don't just wake up and plan for marriage and wake up to abandon the marriage.
Look before you ever leap to avoid stories that touches the heart.

This one no get sense at all, the real marriage is the traditional marriage, so for her information she's already married to that man...

Why allow the man and his family to waste money and invite guest all over just for her to run away...

The man should arrest her and make her refund for all the expenses.... And if she doesn't have money to pay back, she should be sent to Kaduna prison with hard labour.

Marriage is overrated in this modern age

People fail to come to the realisation that what worked for the previous generations might not work for this generation.

So many cases of divorce everywhere and it isn't peculiar to just a particular geographical region but universal.

This is so cruel. You are saving your mental health while ruining another's?
How is that fair. In fact its very CRUEL of you and you are a horrendous person!
All the time and money the man must have spent in making arrangements for the wedding, all going in vain?
Over an issue you could have STAND ON YOUR FEET, tell your family and the man also, that you cant go ahead with the marriage/wedding!
It's easy for you to come online and gloat, all because it isn't your money that was wasted!
You are a HORRENDOUS person!

The amount of money that would be involved in breaking up a marriage that was built on false pretences , and has produced children, go dey higher than the amount of money that was spent on a called off wedding.

Karma will find her. This kind may never marry, or marry into an abusive marriage. She knew how to evade family pressure but waited for the young man to waste his resources - and most embarrassing - bringing family and guests to such a failed mission. It's next to murder. It meant nothing to her but she committed next to murder without knowing it.

That's why women should not be allowed to choose. Society should choose a husband for them because they're prone to mind-changing.
I'm only half joking
