You are earning almost same amount a person will earn for similar job in Nigeria based on exchange rate calculation. And in Nigeria your earnings might not be taxed but in UK, but it's not that bad sha
You are wrong.
Any labourer working fairly consistently will pay tax.

With a tax threshold of N800,000 which is equivalent to an hourly wage of 17 pence equivalent in the UK, a labourer here will surely be taxed because he can easily surpass that sorry Nigerian tax threshold in less than six months and be taxed though he will not be able to feed his family.

No man can keep a home on N800,000 a year period.

Is better to earn $1000 in a month or two in Nigeria than earning €5000 in UK in a month. She is just an ordinary laborer

The benefit of living in the UK is not in pounds to naira conversion but in the quality of life.

1. Free health care - NHS is free at the point of use

2. Security - Her life expectancy is higher in the UK than Nigeria

3. Law & order - Her chances of fair hearing and judgement is way better in the UK than Nigeria

4. Human rights - She can truly experience what human rights mean without any inference from others who maty want to force or coerce to as they wish.

5. So many other things that bring human dignity. Nobody will look down on her as a bricklayer and health & safety rules will be implemented at her work place
Where is free healthcare in the UK? So people migrating through student route and other non-healthcare route are not paying IHS abi which kind talk be this? Do you know how much people pay as IHS fees when they came for their masters, when they applied for post-study and when they eventually got skilled worker visa?

In this eye-opening video, I visit a real UK building site, carry heavy blocks, mix cement, and chat with bricklayers to find out what they ACTUALLY earn in just 8 hours!
General labourer (feeding blocks): £150/day ≈ ₦290,000–₦300,000+ (at current rates!)
Beginner bricklayer: £200/day ≈ ₦380,000+ Naira!
Compare that to typical Nigerian bricklayer pay (₦5,000–₦20,000/day) — the difference is massive! Is japa worth it? 💭 (Remember: UK has taxes, high bills & living costs — but the raw earnings are wild!)
This is raw, on-site truth — no cap! 🔥

If she leaves a modest lifestyle, she will still be saving 30k a day

30k times 25 days.

Can prof saves such in Nigeria?

Haha, no.

As an example, if you have a TV in your house, in Nigeria, you pay nothing to the government, in the UK, you pay a TV Licence.
Also, you can spend as much as 30 pounds monthly for power supply for a one room house..that's 60000 naira.
Then there is council tax, etc.
You only pay TV licence if you watch live prog else you pay nothing for watching TV in the UK and you don't pay to the govt.

You don't pay for electricity in Nigeria? Even when you don't get power supple for days?

Council tax you pay for police, bin collection, road maintenance, street light, street cleaning, free school for kids and the list goes on..

What do you benefit from your tax you pay in Nigeria?

Hmmm....
30 pounds will get you roughly 253 Band A units in Nigeria. That is about 8 and a half units a day for a one room apartment. Not enough to live a decent, comfortable life meaning electricity is just as expensive in Nigeria yet even the Band A service is markedly inferior.

But then how many people in Nigeria living in a one room apartment can afford 30 pounds on electricity alone except their stomach has been replaced with an inverter and they eat lithium ion.

Remember the bills upon bills u have to pay in UK for survival.

The lady might end up not saving enough after all the stress that she may have subjected herself to
So how come we have so much in diaspora remittance every year if japa labourers and other workers end up not saving enough after all the stress of paying for:

> stable electricity,
> water supply
> medical care

while enjoying free education for all their children with good roads as well as security and safety of lives and properties huh

True — but the key point is earning power, not spending in naira.

Yes, the money is spent in pounds, not naira.
But even after UK taxes and living costs, many workers still save more in a month than a Nigerian bricklayer earns in a whole year.

So the comparison isn’t about converting to naira for spending —
it’s about how much value your labour commands in different countries.

That’s why the conversation around japa still matters. 💭

Exactly.
The wage is is low for the UK and low for a similar, equivalent lifestyle in Nigeria. In both cases it cannot support a family so is not sustainable.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, has said that people drilling borehole in the Lekki axis of the state is probably drinking ‘’shit water.”

While speaking at a stakeholders meeting in the state recently, Adegbite noted that contaminated boreholes in Lekki pose health risk and added that treatment of waste water would eradicate any form of disease that may arise from it.

He said, “On waste water treatment, I will say that everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water.’

I'm not excusing bad government in Nigeria, but a lot of UKians complain a lot about high costs of living. Also, difficulty in meeting payments, and even having enough for basic needs is a problem there.

What we do in Nigeria is that we think that someone with N50 pounds a week to spend is enjoing...from a nigerian view. From a UK view, that's a lot of money.

This is not a good example, but you can get pasta at N500 in Nigeria, in the UK? Three times the cost. And so on.

All in all, Nigeria needs to change the basis of our economy to enjoy improved life. Relying on oil is not going to make life better.

This where you guys always get it wrong.... How much is the rent of the bricklayer a day, how much is heat, phone bill, electricity, food etc a day in UK and how much does a Nigerian bricklayer pay for the same things..... By the time you do the maths based on cost of living in the 2 locations you will see that 200 pounds a day will only be big in Nigeria but not for the bricklayer in UK that's struggling bye just as much as you think that's struggling bye in Nigeria too..... The grass is not truly greener at the other side. grin

That's for a one room apartment with lights off, and a lot of conservation of power, and single hood.

If one had a family...costs go up. Winter time...costs go markedly up. (Heating chops power).

TheBedWench:
The one-drop rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was historically prominent in the United States in the 20th century. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of black blood) is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms).

This concept became codified into the law of some states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the long history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste and later segregation. It is an example of  hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups.[3]

The one-drop rule is defunct in law in the United States and was never codified into federal law.
