Would you have said the same if it was the US? Sha don't lie to us cos we no wear pampers.

African and Caribbean countries, if they were not short sighted would go with China.

At least with China, we wont have useless wars and we get to have some infrastructure if we are willing to pay for it. Peep Brazil, which is how they were able to bypass some of Trump's tariff spat with investments in grains and BYD EVs there - https://www.alvarezandmarsal.com/thought-leadership/china-s-strategic-investment-surge-in-brazil-m-a-activity-hits-eight-year-high

...and you just seem to have a problem with the EVs grin. They are coming to Europe by 2027 whether you like it or not and people will always favour cheap and reliable over way more expensive European cars

UK - US foreign policy pictured as hint

cheesy
If I believed that the US had nefarious intentions against us - yes.

Lol, I'm not trying to deceive/convince you as no offence, but you've already demonstrated that you lack basic understanding of Britain's complex history/relationship with China.

You might be perfectly happy selling your country to China, but I and many others, including the Hong Kongers who fled Chinese oppressive rule, would prefer not to become a vassal state of China. Gracias.

You and EVs 🤣🤣....

Chinese EVs have already been welcomed into the UK market; other high end appliances such as American style fridge freezers, smart TVs etc etc have been in the UK for a while...Notable brands include Haier, Hisense etc which I would personally recommend grin

The point is that the UK should do business with China (they are the 2nd largest economy) , but we would be wise to keep both eyes wide open as we do.

Come off it abeg cheesy
Come off what? It's common knowledge that the UK, US, Canada etc all conduct clandestine intelligence activities aka spying . There's even an intelligence alliance - the Five Eyes- comprising the UK, US, Can, Aus and NZ.

Does that mean that we should sit back and let ourselves become prey to a potentially hostile actor? Don't the news articles that you shared show that action was taken when spying activities were exposed, e.g. Germany ordering the CIA chief to leave the country.

Whether you and Hustla want to believe it, the facts have shown that China is one of the top cyber and state threats to the UK. Nevertheless, I guess it's only fair that we do nothing, or maybe we should make it easy for them and provide direct access to our top communication cables because after all, we are spies also and China/other countries take no action whatsoever to stop us.

What an incredibly naive view.

US having nefarious intentions against UK ke? California literally has a bigger GDP than the entire UK. It is no longer 1832, wake up and smell the coffee please grin

You are the one who lacks deep understanding of world issues apart from what the West feeds you with and its apparent.

What history? You mean the complex history where Britain flooded China with Opium (literally decimated the population with drugs) when they could not find anything the Chinese wanted from them? (China at the time was already self sufficient).
That one? Don't make me laugh abeg.

Is that not one of background stories of all the distrust or is this not the economist crying about it -https://www.economist.com/china/2018/12/15/the-west-once-flooded-china-with-opium-china-is-returning-the-favour and the reason why people like Trump and Rubio think they are doing it in reverse now? https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/drugs-fentanyl-china/

It is literally contained in official US history files so I am not the one cooking up anything - https://history.state.gov/milestones/1830-1860/china-1 .. and if you like Wikipedia, its also here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_Wars

You can keep deceiving yourself. I will choose not to believe useless, baseless and laughable tales of Chinese EVs listening in on conversations when there are obviously more covert, discrete ways to do it in the wild on a nation state level like Pegasus.

Hint: Even the FBI says they have access to it but dont worry, it was only obtained to “stay abreast of emerging technologies and tradecraft” wink

I didn't say that the US had nefarious intentions against the UK. Please go back and read your earlier post and my response that I would speak in the same way IF the US had nefarious intentions against us.

Let's agree to disagree. You can continue to reside on Cloud Cuckoo Land where China is an altruistic, philanthropic provider of loans and breaker of chains, is not any kind of threat or spy and has zero imperialist ambitions 😇

I will remain in the real world where we do business with China and buy a whole range of Chinese products (including EVs 🤣), but at the same time stay (increasingly) alert to the threats that our national (and international) security agencies have warned against.

Lol, no. You need to re-read what I have said.

Nowhere have I said that any country should grant access to China or whatever.

My focus is where you said "African and Caribbean countries are too complacent and short-sighted to realise this..."
The point is that making China out to be exceptionally devious in their spying or a threat to African countries in a way that US/UK etc are not, is absurd. China poses no more of a threat and is no more destructive in its spying, lending, manufacturing, subsidies etc. than the West.

Just to be clear so it's easy to follow: the point isn't that China is a benevolent entity as you've mischaracterized (as usual for you). It's that it's no more malevolent than the West.

PS. I don't think you actually opened the articles I linked to. If you had, you'd have seen that they weren't about the Five Eyes. They were all separate instances of the US spying on its own allies; sorry, vassals, including the UK. Here again, the point stands that China isn't any doing anything the US, UK etc aren't doing.

By the way, on the subject of Chinese EVs, I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the Xpeng X9 to launch in the UK. That car is glorious (not an adjective one would usually use for a car but believe me it fits - watch a video to see for yoursel).

I will be one of the first customers and Xi can listen to my conversations as much as he likes cheesy. He wouldn't be hearing anything the US and its vassals aren't hearing anyway, given what Snowden revealed.

You are the one who claims the West is this - the all do-gooders who never spy on other countries and are the saints and saviours of the entire universe with no ulterior motives, the ones who will save the world from the imperialist antics of China & Russia as if we are not witnessing worse from present day US.
Real life is not an American movie, we read and research and see all the bs for what it really is.

..And when we ask you to list the numerous China atrocities, you will quote some "national security" rhetoric with no real evidence.

Don't buy from China na grin As if the countries yapping about can compete with them in any shape or form. We were literally here to see the trade wars in real time and the backtracking by the US when critical "it is no longer 1820" lessons were learnt.

Excuses quickly turned to "unfair trade practices" "overcapacity" and Chinese imperialism

I made no reference to the UK, US in my post and I did not draw any parallels between China and the West in relation to dealings with Africa and the Caribbean. That comparison has come from you.

>Just to be clear so it's easy to follow: the point isn't that China is a benevolent entity as you've mischaracterized (as usual for you). It's that it's no more malevolent than the West.

Just to be clear, as you seem to be confused about the discussion I was having with Hustla: The point (that I have consistently made) is that China has been shown to pose a threat to the UK and thus it is wise for the UK to insulate herself against such threats and not make herself a sitting target. Simples.
Hustla on the other hand argues that China is no threat whatsoever and that the UK is just jealous of their EVs 🤣

You are making a separate point in attempting to argue that China is as much a threat as the West - which is helpful in so far that you are at least admitting the possibility of hostile intent and actions from China. Could you please gently explain this to Hustla when you get the chance. Muchos Gracias.

PS - I did open the articles - I even quoted one which talked about the expulsion of the CIA chief from Germany :-/

Aaaaand here we have your very intelligent, very eloquent submission, proving just how moronic you are not. Lol

By the way, I wonder what kind of person you are IRL, given this apparent inability to discuss anything without denigrating others. Just look at your posts history. Are you seriously incapable of having a discussion, however strongly you feel about it, without throwing insults like an adolescent throwing a tantrum, or is it just a preference thing?

I'm never going to engage you again but honestly I just feel very strongly about telling you so hopefully you do a little introspection.

LOL I think you're confusing me with another poster or maybe not reading my comments.

Pray tell me when I claimed that the West are "all do gooders"? I even said that the West has an intelligence "aka spy" alliance 🤣

Ive already said that you're free to keep believing that China isn't any kind of threat whatsoever. Thankfully you're not a UK policy maker so it's of no consequence to us.

I and my household will continue to buy from China. We love eet 🤣 I'm even typing from a China phone which has served me well grin

At the bolded, no, that's not the case. Give some credit to both sides of your ancestral regions here. Everyone knows that the Chinese are just another bunch of sharks out to prey upon the weak, but since we live in shark-infested waters and have no defences we are simply resigned to being prey. There's a conversation to be had about that resignation and how we ended up in that role, but not regarding where African and Caribbean countries are.

Waiting with bated breath to see what's eventually decided regarding the Chinese super embassy. I have the feeling that Starmer will sign it off, probably just to show that there'll be no more U-turning. While I really wish Labour and Starmer will succeed, I have to say that it's not looking good for them with all the reversals of policy. The ID one annoyed me in particular as it was spectacularly ill-thought-through from the beginning. It's generally the case (not just here but also in other developed countries that attract immigrants) that the general [British] public are usually massively uninformed about how the immigration system works. Many people believe that legal immigrants can claim benefits for instance. They have no idea how much people have to pay for visas and so forth and generally tend to believe the narratives they read in the papers. It generally seems that it's only those who've got friends or family members who have to engage with the immigration system have some or very good knowledge of how it works.

Labour's ID plan felt this way. You get the impression that the people making policy don't actually know how their own immigration system works either. One would think that the government, who runs the eVisa system, would know that legal immigrants already have digital ID so introducing digital ID for the whole country to combat illegal working would be pointless, and isn't a good reason to advance for wanting to do so. You wonder where their Sir Humphreys are doing (if indeed any still remain) - why is no-one getting rid of these ideas before they are announced as policy in the first place?
You will be surprised as per the bolded

Lol. You meant this as a diss but it just goes to prove my point.

While China is evidently spying on only the MOD (according to you), the US and its vassals have been undertaking mass surveillance of citizens and just hoovering up people's data, conversations etc without any regard to their privacy or rule of law as regards warrants etc.

Obviously, China does much the same; the difference being that when it's China the West will call it dictatorship and repression but when it's the West it's 'democracy' and 'national security' cheesy

Lol, it's not a diss. It's reassuring facts as the warnings have specifically been made to MoD personnel driving leased EVs. See below excerpt:

"Warning stickers banning military workers from discussing sensitive information have been placed inside the Ministry of Defence's electric cars, as fears grow that China could be listening.
Stuck to the dashboard of the EV cars, the stickers warn: "MOD devices are NOT to be connected to vehicle.”

Another message stated: "Avoid conversations above OFFICIAL within the vehicle."

The MOD is already believed to have banned some electric vehicles with Chinese components from being parked close to military bases that could have sensitive information.

Re the links you posted, I can't speak to how Americans feel about mass surveillance by their government or what the Chinese think about surveillance and censorship by their own government....but I think I can hazard a guess about how they would feel about Chinese surveillance of American citizens and establishments , and vice versa.
