That's what you get, when you produce doctor's through quota system, instead of merits based systems, my condolences to the family that lose their love one.

I'm not tryna hold fort for the doc,but if you have never been in an op field, you won't understand how bloody and messy it is. With blood everywhere and covering everything, it's easy to miss some forceps. And some forceps are so tiny, like the mosquito forceps. We usually have an equipment count before closing up but what the issue is if there is a miscount,or there is no theater nurse.
The medical field is a zero error occupation so even a tiny error can cause death. And as humans,we are prone to errors. No doc goes to work to kill patients. Even the best docs have made errors. I had made my own too, when I was mentally low

Most of the good doctors don Japa, it's possible those involved are Vet Doctors that tried to change their job functions without requisite training.

I guess it's high time patient's relatives are allowed into the operating room to ensure that objects are not forgotten inside the body of their relatives.
This news is heartbreaking.
And you think it'll help matters? Allowing more people into the OR would make the patient prone to more infections
I realize the bulk of folks commenting here have never entered or even seen an OR and think it's just like any part of the hospital. And this explains the multitude of crassly ignuurentt posts I'm seeing. People should intimate themselves about scenarios before having opinions

It starts when some parts of Nigeria admit students with less than 200 in UTME to study medicine while those with 260-270 are left stranded in other parts of the same country.

Those below-average students then get shoehorned through school, and foisted on the hapless populace, while the politicians who champion the system that rewards incompetence based on ethnicity run to the UK at the slightest whisper of a headache.
Re: Kano Suspends Doctors Who Left Scissors In Patient’s Stomach by maiunguwar: 10:07am On Jan 16
That's what you get when you give admissions based on quota system especially for professional courses.

Quota system must be done away with if we want to develop as a country. Let the best brains win

Wow.

You brought in a great idea from another angle.

I appreciate.

Let me just say, these mistakes are lurking around to happen from a slight misjudgement or miscalculation from the doctor.

I'm not into the medical field neither have I been to an OR before. On the issue of the patient contracting more infections, I believe that people that find themselves in the OR do disinfect themselves before entering there. The main issue here is the negligence on the part of the doctors that forgot foreign objects inside the body of their patient.
While in a Abuja some years ago, a similar incident happened at Gwagwalada general hospital and the woman lost her life. So what should be the way forward?

Doctor? They are not telling you guys the truth.
Na nurse. Super nurse. They are all over the hospitals in the north..
They will rather treat a nurse as a doctor in some areas in the far north than employ a southern doctor.
Served in Kano and one of the doctors from Enugu that wanted to stay back after service was chased away by one of these "Super Nurses" who claimed he could even conduct operations!! Not hearsay. I saw with my korokoro eyes..
The local government chairman wanted the guy to stay. The people wanted him to stay. But this very nurse that has been there for ages refused and started threatening him.
We advised to go back home and he did. Dude is doing well these days
So, because of the singular incident on how your friend was threatened by the so-called super nurse not to stay back, that's why you just conclude that northern hospitals don't like employing southern doctors abi?

Can you see how narrow minded you are for you to use one incident to rub it on the entire north?

Have you been to all the states in the north & have discovered that there are no southern doctors employed in any of them?

This is not the first time. I think what they should be doing is to always take stock of whatever instrument they wanna use for a patient and do the same after surgery.
This is the standard procedure, even redo the counts of gauze used after, the attending staff and surgeon all failed, this is definitely negligence and show of the littlest regard for human life, visiting hospitals where you have to rely on people who have personal struggles and systemic issues makes one seek the hands of God.

Well, the error you made when you were "mentally low" is the patient who suffered this error alive and fully functional? You antagonise yourself, errors aren't allowed, and there are no excuses or justifications, how can there not be a theater nurse on ground for a surgical procedure? this is one of the reasons many affluent Nigerians don't trust the health sector here, people do not follow proper way to do things, grave consequences follow and the rest is stories.
There are many of these cases, most swept under the carpet, I have seen a surgeon excise a lump for proper testing while continuing to lament how he's supposed to be done and be somewhere else, how the excision was taking too long because of its attachment to the breastbone all while the patient was laying there and observing, he was even instructing a nurse to go check on his kid 😂 i doubt you'd have the same take if this woman was family, a daughter, wife, or mother.

Was he new to surgery?
Was he incompetent?

Was he exhausted?
Was he distracted?
Was it a system failure?

I keep asking myself different questions. How the hell do you forget a whole pair of scissors in a human body?
System Failure ni o.
