Remembering this incident always makes me laugh my head out. It was back in 2001, I was 21 and still waiting for admission into higher institution. Around October of that year, Mum has told me and my siblings we're traveling to the village during the Xmas break. I was so glad cus I last visited my village in the east 8yrs earlier which was 1993 during the "Oso Abiola" time. So I started hustling for money that I will use to go form big boy in the village. December came and it's time to travel. Back then, when we want to travel, we travel in batches and not at once, the reason were best known to my mum and dad, but I later understood it years later. So two of my younger ones travelled with my mum. Another two travel with my dad, while me as the first born will come later with one of my uncle. . So all my siblings and mum and dad were already in the village by 27th December that year, me and my uncle left Lagos on the 27th and reach Umuahia that same day but spend two days there at a relative place. Back in the village everybody was worried cus my uncle didn't tell them we'll be stopping over at Umuahia. We finally got to the village on the 30th and everybody heave a sigh of relief. The first thing I ask my younger ones is where they take their bath, they showed me bathroom but said they will have to go and fetch water for me from our river or better still I can still go there and take my bath. I took the 2nd option, at least that's an opportunity for me to start exploring our village. They showed me the direction and I left for there. I put on my neat sports wear of jersey and sports nicker. (My mum was an okrika trader then and she has selected the best of grade 1 for us). . I got to the place I was directed to and there was a small house you will pass before you get to the river. The river is at the back of the house, but you will slide down a slope to get to it. So the house is like on top of a hill to where the river is. As I was passing the house, I saw one beautiful girl who couldn't be more than 16 or 17, before I later got to know she was 17. She was washing plates at the back of the house and humming one of Celine Dion's song. I greeted her in Igbo language but she didn't answer while I continue walking to the river side. Curiosity got the better of me and I told myself I must know this fine babe. Me that wanted to stay long and savor the river before, I quickly took my bath and rush back just to get a glimpse of her again. But on my way coming back she wasn't there, but has gone inside the house. When I got to the front of the house, I noticed they were selling foods, pepper soup and drinks. I quickly rushed for home, change to one of my best clothes and took the 2k I have saved back in Lagos and went to their restaurant to buy a drink just so I can see her. . Luckily, she was there helping her mom and elder sister to serve customer. I beckon to her give me a bottle of coke, me never dey drink beer then. She serve me the drink while smiling. Her smile with her dimples makes her beautiful the more. All thru my stay there I was just glancing at her, she caught my eyes on few occasions but will quickly look away. Towards in the evening by 5pm or there about, I noticed she has changed to go take her bath at the female river which is just along the road and pass under a bridge. I hurriedly finish my drink and trace her to the river, while she was down bathing with her swimming gear, I was on top of the bridge relaxing on the rail and watching her, few times she raised her head and saw me. And then made a gesture with her hands like "what is it, why are my stalking her". When she finished bathing and playing with other girls around after 6pm, she walked back to their house and I followed from a little distance. But this time I walked pass their house as she entered and walked to our village football field to catch a football match going on. . It was dark when I left the football field, as I was coming back I saw her in front of their house peeling oranges that was filled in a tray and selling them. I told myself, "ope o, opportunity to get closer to her". I went there, sat down in the bench close to her and told her to peel and sell orange for me. She looked at me, smile and said you again, what do you want from me? Her pure English jolted me to reality, I thought she was one of the "mgbekes" we have in the village. I replied her that, ah ah! Is it not orange you're selling, I want to buy and taste your orange if they're sweet like you. She said again, how do I mean if they're sweet like her. I told her never mind, just sell orange for me. She said, she has been noticing how I have been looking and following her since afternoon, while talking some guys came around and were speaking Igbo saying "Oby nwa" sell orange for us. They were playing with her and trying to touch her, but she always shun them and tell them to stop. Two among the guys were one of my uncle's age grade and they know me and saw me there but never mind me. . Talking about this my uncle, he was my uncle in the true sense of the word, but I don't call him uncle but by his name. Why bcus, he's just three years older than me and the last born from my mum's side. Right from small we have been playing and doing things together. But in the east there's a certain age you will reach, you will start finding your age grade and attending their meetings. He grew up in the village but me I grew up in Lagos so I no send their age grade meetings nor do I even know my age grades sef. So, it was thru those my uncle's friend got to know her name was Oby, short for Obiageli. After the those guys left, I teased her again by saying Oby, your orange is very sweet, I hope you will be sweet like your orange. Then she snapped, who told you my name. I told her, don't pretend you didn't hear when those guys called your name. She then said ok, what do I really want from her? This time no need beating around the bush. I told her straight away that I liked her, and I will like us to be friends. She burst into laugh and said: another one, I asked her what does she mean by another one. She said I shouldn't mind, but I will understand later. . I told her that I really liked her and not joking. Then she told me to wait when she finished selling the oranges, she will have my time and I can say what's in my mind. I said ok o, I will wait. 30 min later she sold all the oranges and start packing her things inside. When it was time to take the bench I was sitting on, she told me to go wait for her at a distance that was dark, that she will come meet me there. I did as she said, about 10min later she appeared. Oya Oga, I am here. What do you have to say. Before I start talking, she interrupted me and said the reason why she's giving me a chance to talk is bcus I don't sound like I live in the village. I told her she's correct, that actually I just arrived that morning from Lagos and when I saw her that afternoon washing plate and humming to Celine Dion's song, I was mesmerized by her beauty and voice. And also that I am a fan and lover of Celine Dion's songs. She laughed and said, hope I am not trying to use bcus she's singing her song and now said I am her fan too. I said nope, and she said I should sing one of her song for her, which I did perfectly and she clapped for me. She asked me my name and I told her, and also told her about myself, that I am from Lagos bla bla bla. . She told me she lives in Abuja, and that, that was her first time to visit the village since she was born. She said, her father was the principal of our village secondary school and that her father wants her to come do her waec in the village for him to supervise her. She told me her full name was Obiageli, Oby for short but that in Abuja most of her friends called her Celine Dion bcus of her obsession for her songs. We both laughed and I asked her for the last time if she has accepted my proposal. She said she can't say for now, but that I should stay in queue like others. I asked her what she meant, and she said do I rmbr when earlier she told me another one. I said yes, what was the meaning? She said I am the 5th person that has asked her out since on the 24th she entered the village, that was why she replied me with another one when I said I liked her. Then she said, she has already told herself and my other competitors that it's on the 31st she will give everybody their answer and choose just one person. That I should go home and pray that it will be me. Hmm...... Inukwa prayer bcus of a girl. We disengaged and bid each other goodnight, and to see the next day. I went home with a bit of happiness and anxiety. . The remaining and exciting part of the story will continue in the comments section where my own uncle almost stabbed me in the back bcus of her.......... |

Continuation...... So I got home that night with a bit of skepticism about her but hopeful. Unknown to me, this girl was already head over heels for me. She has already told her elder sister and mother about me. That she has found a good friend and companion. I didn't know until the next day, after taking breakfast. I waited till midday before I went to take my bath and start preparing to go hear my exam result of last night, lolz. Meanwhile, while I was preparing to go see her. The whole family was preparing to go for a church crusade organized by that my uncle me and him travelled together from Lagos. So I left the house before others. While all these was going on, I didn't know that my other uncle who I told you guys was three years older than me have been monitoring my movement. Cus his age group friends has gone and told him they saw me with Oby that they have all been toasting and that it seems we are getting close with each other. . So while others were at the crusade ground, this my uncle was watching me. So I left for Oby's place. I was about 40 or 50 metres away from their house when she saw me. She left what she was doing, ran to me and hugged me, wrapping her arms around my neck, I was shocked and surprised at the same time. I freed my hands and didn't hold her back, she told me anxiety wanted to kill her that she has been expecting me for long and that she has a surprise for me. While all this was going on, I was still baffled. Does it mean I have won the race, I said to myself. Some kind of butterfly feelings engulfed me. She didn't even mind I didn't held her back nor say anything, she was just talking on and on, how she has told her mum about me. How they have prepared a very delicious meal for me to welcome me, how this and that bla bla bla. The excitement in her was just too much, like a kid they just bought new toys for. . I finally broke my silence, Oby, what's going on? This one you're excited like this, and I don't understand all what you're saying. She said don't worry, and she held my hand and start leading me to their house like a goat taking to the slaughter house. I held my breathe and told her while walking to their house that I really don't understand what's going on, that she should brief me. She just said I should be calm and composed, that she wants to go introduce me to her mum and sister. Hian! Just like that I said. She said I shouldn't worry, that she's taking care of everything. So I followed her like a zombie to their house/restaurant. They didn't opened shop that day for sales, cus her mother was going out for an occasion. She offered me a seat at the veranda of their house and went inside to go call her mum and sister. When they came out, I stood up, bowed and bent a little to greet her mother. . Her mother replied my greetings and then said in Igbo language: Ah, this one is really a Lagos brought up, that Yoruba people have thought me how to greet. We all laughed it over. Her elder sister greeted me and I reply. Her elder sister was even more prettier than her and my age mate. She was 20yrs and she introduced herself as Nkechi. I wanted to tell her my name, and she said I shouldn't worry that her sister has told them everything about me. I glanced at Oby, and she smiled sheepishly. Honestly guys, if not that I have already gone for Oby, her sister would have been a perfect match for me. More matured in stature and my age mate, but fate had already brought me to Oby. I teased her sister, where was she before I saw Oby. She laughed and said, actually she's the indoor type and doesn't like going out and coming out too much. Before I know it, her mother has served me a sumptuous meal of akpu and egusi soup with bush meat. I ate to my fill and then they brought out fresh palm wine, I wanted to say no I don't take alcohol, but when I saw Oby grabbed a cup and fill for herself, I have no choice but to join them. Not long after, her mother excused us that she's going for an outing. That I should feel at home. Lest I forget, her mother has asked me for the name of my family and I told her and shook her head that my family name is good. . There's something I noticed in the village, almost everybody knows every family in the village. Pray your family doesn't have a bad name, if it's, you're a goner. You'll be treated like a lepper. So after her mother left, her sister went inside to take a nap. We were left alone. I don't need a sooth sayer to tell me I was her chosen one. While we were talking, I told her it was just ystday we met and I have already been treated like a special person in her house. Does it mean I am the chosen one among her 5 toasters. She frowned and said others were not toasters but jesters, that I am the only person that really talked to her with sense. That the other guys were just flaunting money at her. That do I know, two were among those guys that came to buy orange from her last night. It was my uncle's friends. She said I should forget them jare, that it's me her heart chosed. . After some talking, she said I should take her to our house. That she wants to know our house. Hmmmm.... Knowing no one was at home, I said no problem let's go. She went inside and tell her sister that we are going to my place. Her sister came to asked me which compound, and I told her my family compound, which she nodded and said we should go (I know it was for safety reason, and I understood her) When we got to our compound, it was silent, lonely and empty of anybody. She asked for everybody and I told her where they went and she smiled and said ok, perfect. I asked her why she said perfect, she said I shouldn't mind that she just wants to seat down and relax. I took her to the room me and my immediate younger brother shared. She just flunged herself on top of the bed and heave a sigh of relief. I sat at the edge of the bed we started talking sweet nonsense. Before I know it she was at my back wrapping her arms around me from behind. I turned around, held her head and kissed her. After like 30 seconds from the kissing, she whispered to me to go bolt the door. I went and bolt the door, came back and started kissing again. . 5min into our kissing and caressing, we heard a knocked at the door. I was surprised, cus I wasn't expecting anyone to be back by that time. It was 3pm and the program was supposed to end by 6pm. She stood up and sat at the edge of the bed while I went for the door, immediately I opened the door a hand dragged me outside. It was my uncle, I was shocked and angry at the same time. What's it I asked, and why did you drag me outside like a suspect? He said to me, is that not Oby that is inside with you. I said yes, but how did he know? He said he saw us passed while at the crusade, and he wanted to be sure where we were going to and what we want to do..... I asked him, what concerns him about where we are going to or about to do. He said, it concerns him bcus that person I am inside with is our blood relations, that it's a taboo to have any intimacy. . My mind first of all shooked, I don't know the village that much nor our kindred like that. I asked him if he's sure of what he's saying and he said yes. I then asked him to tell me how we are related. Here comes story for the gods. My uncle told me that her great grand father's cousin's son married one of my maternal grandmother's niece. I said to him, ah ah! Which kind funny family tree are you quoting here.... That all what he said here doesn't concern me and her now. He dragged his ear and said he has warn me o, that I shouldn't bring calamity into the family and then left. His last talked and the seriousness in it got me afraid and I went inside and told Oby that we should start going. She was surprised, and asked me who was that and what did he tell me. I just told her, it was my uncle and that he said my mum needed me immediately at the crusade ground for a special prayer, I lied. She tries to hold me again for us to continue what we were doing. I gently took her hands away and she somehow became angry. I escorted her home and told her I will see her in the night. She grudgingly waved me goodbye and I went back home, the next I wanted to do was to investigate what my uncle just said about us being family............ To be continue! |

Ehen! I would have said why I was ban for some minutes. The story I painstakingly finished writing this early morning has been whipped out. The mod that did that didn't do well at all. Do you how many hours it took me to type that. And if I may ask, what's the banning for, there's no iota of curse words or insult in it |

@Op, I thought decency was a thing then, that women kept their virginity until marriage night. Seems the older generation lied to us about how chaste they were |

So I came back home thinking about what my Uncle said. I told myself once mumsie comes back I will ask her. I went to join them at the crusade ground until 6pm when everyone got back home, but mumsie still has other engagements elsewhere. It was new year Eve, so there was enough walking about to do. While my siblings and other family members were all cheerful and playing and gisting. I was brooding and thinking to myself, so I would have committed an abomination this afternoon. My mind was restless, I was eagerly waiting for mum to come back so I will throw her a barrage of questions. Meanwhile that my Uncle was with his friends elsewhere drinking and celebrating. When it was dark by after 7pm, mumsie wasn't back yet. I decided to go see Oby just to know how she's doing and feeling about the whole incident. |
