In a sane country, when you owe nepa bills , they cut your lights In Nigeria, when you owe bills, you steal the power and chase nepa officials who come to disconnect you with cutlass and gun. Of course the big men and women ignore And then we wonder why we don't have light. When you don't pay for the power that you use on the grounds that it is expensive the sector won't have enough money to improfe things I'm all for government paying for improved power, but it would cost 20 trillion naira annually for the next ten years to get there. Are you ready to support the borrowing needed to get there and are you ready to pay the high bills that would result? |

nairalanda1:Power companies in Nigeria are selling darkness. Estimated billing doesn't exist in saner climes. Most customers in Aba are now on prepaid. And there is significant improvement in power in areas covered by prepaid. Because if there is blackout, the company makes a loss. So they have no choice but to make sure power is stable. Ever since our area was covered by prepaid, we no longer contribute to repair our transformer. |

nairalanda1:In sane countries consumers don't bear the cost of buying electric poles, transformers, wires, etc, it is the responsibility of distribution companies. Left with people like you, consumers will be the ones installing and maintaining telecom masts by now. |

Restoring power to the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa after settling outstanding debts is a reminder that even diplomatic missions are not exempt from operational responsibilities. |
| Re: South Africa Restores Power to Nigeria High Commission after debts payment by nairalanda1(m): 6:37pm On Feb 02 |
Jakarta:Yes, because in sane countries everyone pays their bills on time, and everyone pays a cost reflective tarrifs and people who do not pay are cut off until they do, therefore the distribution companies can afford transformers and so on Nigeria? First off, only 20% of consumers pay cost reflective tarrifs. Government is struggling to pay subsidies and even the bond they issued to pay for the thing only covers a small amount, not the whole, stealing power or using power without paying for it it something that most people do, and metering doesn't solve the problem. Let's not forget corruption and ripoffs like estimated billing which happen because not everyone pays so discos burden those who do pay. And people who don't pay do illegal connection when cut off. That translates to a sector that loses money and cant afford to buy transformers, polew and wires so people have to buy it. You get the problem. ? I am not here to defend any government and if you think I am, then you have missed the point To make it clear, we all pay cost reflective tarrifs for the phone services we use. As such we don't buy diesel for the generators , we don't buy telecom mast and we don't buy components for the gsm company. Because we pay them a cost reflective tarrifs and because people cannot use phones without paying. The power sector doesn't have that advantage. When most people don't pay a cost reflective tarrif and when 60% of metered consumers bypass their meters. And where even those on subsidized rates either underpay or don't pay. Any abuse would be reported to the mods |

nairalanda1:There is no any sane country in the world where everybody pay their bills on time, that's a lazy lie. Making paying customers suffer for a company's inefficiency doesn't make sense one bit. Going by your logic since people borrow airtime without bothering to pay back, should telecom companies see that as an excuse for other paying customers to suffer the consequences of bad debts? People will pay for what they see and use, and if they fail to do so, then disconnection is sure. A transformer can't be faulty for almost a month and as customers we bear the brunt or fixing it, then a week later a distribution company will slap us with bills without deducting the cost from of fixing the said transformer, that is stealing, unfair and will always be resisted. As a distribution company if you don't have money to provide the needed structure for your business to run smoothly then you quit and let those that can do it, not transferring your basic responsibilities to consumers all in the name of bad debts, consumers not paying bills on time, not having money, those are lame excuses. |

anonimi:First, who told you the "warmth of our country" and your supposed warmth of you "its people" is what I enjoy? In fact, what warmth do you, anonimi, who can't converse without insults and rudenes, have for anyone? And why should I leave the comfort of where I live and work and enjoy my life, and come and suffer with people like you who don't understand the power we have as citizens of a nation? Can you afford my wages and the comfort it buys me where I live, or are you seriously asking me to come and suffer and wail like you do because you believe you are powerless? It doesn't "happens in the same way and to the same extent as in Nigeria", because Nigerians like you don't know what powers you have and how to use it. And until you do, suffer! Because you are reaping the suffer you sowed, and because, seriously, I no send you! |
