Danielmac:Hello Daniel, Congratulations on begining Medical School properly. So let's cut to the chase, I don't think one has to buy Physical books as most texts are now in Soft copy, anyways: 1. Anatomy - Soft Copy Keith Moore: You can read your first 70 pages from here and occasionally for reference - Hard copies of Vishram Singh Vol 1,2,3 -Slides 2. Histology - Soft Copy: Junquiera and Indebir Singh (They are better than eachother on certain topics) 3. Embryology - Soft Copy: Human Embryology by Indebir Singh (leave Saddler, I did not like that book) 4. Physiology - Soft Copy: Ganong, Guyton, BRS, - Hardcopy: Sembulingam - Slides 5. Biochemistry - Soft copy: Satyarayana, Chatterjhea (leave Leninger and Harper's and Lee's) - Slides Your order of Priority should be to read slides first before textbook and videos, hold your videos well. Practical Manuals are between you and the Preclinical lab people. Know what you should know to pass, nobody cares about your stuff if you fail. Follow those who have their ears to the ground make you no go dey read aimlessly. Past questions very important, form your MB essay notes using the past questions. Draw for them in Anatomy, write small put diagram, write small put diagram. Your diagram does not have to be pretty, the most important thing is for whoever will mark your work to know what they are looking at just by looking at your diagram and labelling. Physiology also write plenty, put diagram, charts, graphs etc. You can't be writing on Hb-O2 dissociation curve and not included the diagram of the curve. Biochemistry, write and draw their pathways If attendance is ≥ 75% if you cannot make some classes have people who will sign on your behalf At the back of your mind, you should always aim to make it through to the other side, nobody cares what you went through to get to the other side, just Pass. Doctor wey get Distinction and Doctor wey no get, all nah Doctor. Compete against yourself not others. Your journeys are very different. In worse case scenarios, always make sure your test scores are not below the mean test score of the class. You are on your way to bagging an MBBS/BDS be respectful, treat people well, don't be selectively nice, don't look down on the Anatomy and Physiology guys, be humble. 20 Children cannot play for 20 years how much more a large MBBS/BDS class, do and collect your degree and move on with your life. Write your MB, pass and be looking. Nothing should concern you with resit/repeats. Do what it takes to pass and not your best because your best may not be enough. May the odds always be in your favour. Wishing you all the best Daniel. |

horpeyemmi66:You are right about the textbooks. I was surprised that my daughter in Medicine has never asked me for money.to buy textbooks. I only bought her a laptop and maybe occasional money for practical manuals. She is starting 300lvl now. Do not know yet if that is when the buying of textbooks will start. 😁😁😁😁 |

horpeyemmi66:When i was in the University, I use to see my secondary school classmates in Medicine carrying big big books. There were no laptops and mobile phones then and no Internet. I still had this impression which was why I was thinking of physical textbooks. |

Danielmac:Whatever you do, don't overstack yourself with textbooks. From my own experience and my school's preference: Keith Moore for Anatomy Sembulingam for Physiology Vasudevan/Chatterjea for Bch This is what worked for me based on my school also. So find out from your seniors also what books they used and what books your lecturers prefer. Also, your notes and slides are your greatest companion. Textbooks for stuff and understanding and notes/slides to pass the exams. Some of us neglected our notes back then and almost paid the price for it if not for God. |

Joy0041:The biggest mistake anybody can make in medical school. You'll struggle without past questions even if you're super brilliant and a jacko! And if you're a guy just find one or two female friends hold tight. Those females are something else. They will push you to your best and more importantly they always have the latest past questions and insider info.. You'll thank yourself for this. |

Securing HouseManship/internship placement is becoming increasingly difficult and frustrating. The Centralized portal introduced to address irregularities in the previous system has worsened it. Check my topic to see revealing details about the unholy practices in the current system. Share it to wider audience to push for a reform. Thank you |

Upright001:Hello, what do you want to find out about the ABU Medical school? |
| Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by Upright001: 6:20pm On Feb 04 |
horpeyemmi66:Good evening Sir. I want to know about their admission Modality and cut off mark for MBBS And the UTME score that might get one admission for medicine Thanks Doc. |
| Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by horpeyemmi66(m): 1:04am On Feb 05 |
Upright001:Alright. So let's go this way. ABU does not publish any official cut-off marks, some of what has been written below is based on anecdotal evidence. The two major factors ABU considers are the following: 1. Your aggregate score (UTME + PUTME)/2 2. State of Origin So here's how it works, ABU is the most culturally diverse federal university, you literally find almost every Nigerian tribe at ABU, even the ones you have never heard of. As such, ABU always strives to reflect federal character thing. However, the 19 Northern states, are the Catchment areas of ABU, as such in a medical school class, you typically have more representation from the Northern states. What ABU does is to rank people from every state, if for example ABU is to take 12 people from Kwara state, they would rank everyone from Kwara from the highest scoring candidate to the least and pick out the 12 they want. Now, for someone coming from a state that is not catchment like Osun or Cross River typically has to beat the undisclosed Merit cut-off and the ranking thing I explained earlier to be considered. The lesser the number of people who have applied from a certain state the better. For perspective, When I applied for BDS in 2019 using Ondo state, my UTME: 297, PUTME: 320, Aggregate: 309. When applying from a Non-catchment state, you typically have to score as high as possible. Someone coming from Yobe would not have had to score as high as I have done, I hope you get the gist. Hopefully this helps. All the best. |

Hello everyone, I’m new here and I’m following this thread to learn from others. I’ll appreciate any advice shared here. Thank you. |

Hello everyone! Please I need advice. I'm 25 (will turn 26 this year) and I'm currently serving at the Federal University Lokoja medical school. The Human Anatomy department there. I graduated with a BSc Human Anatomy, 2.1 (4.25 GPA) from University of Port Harcourt. IBefore, I would always say I didn't want to go back to MBBS because of the cost and I felt that time had passed for me, but a couple of things made me start considering it again. 1. When FUL was trying to get MDCN accreditation late last year and early this year, I noticed that only 2 of the lecturers on the anatomy staff list had a BSc in Human Anatomy. The rest were doctors. Some had a first degree in anatomy, while others were pure MBBS. When I asked one of the first degree anatomy holders, he explained that in a short while, non-MBBS degree holders would no longer be allowed to teach medical students, and coming into academia with an MBBS degree was much better than coming in with a BSc. I realised that even if I have a PhD in Anatomy, perhaps a time would come where a doctor without a PhD would be preferred to lecture medical students than me. I really did not mind becoming a lecturer though, but now I'm not so sure with my anatomy degree. 2. Someone asked me today what my plans would be after I'm done serving (I finish in May), and I genuinely did not know what to say. The truth is, I would say I'd go for an MSc or something (I was considering doing something with neuroscience), but I'm starting to feel like I'm delaying the inevitable. Unemployment or underemployment and stuff. I remember my doctor uncle telling me that the 5, 6, 7 years I did not want to spend to go back to school after my anatomy degree, would still be spent on the unemployment line, and his words were scary. I think I'm going to apply for direct entry to MBBS this year. After all, I wouldn't know unless I try and it's better I do something than sit around worrying right? Please I need advice on the best university to apply to where I would actually stand a chance of getting in on my first try. I considered Rivers State University since the school is in my village and they'd definitely have an indigene quota, but the school fees even for indigenes is too much for me to pay. My parents are near retirement and I don't want to put this extra burden on them after they paid for the first degree. Yes, all my siblings are done with school with the last one in final year, but I would feel guilty if I put another degree cost on them. I'd like to fund this one myself or at least get a scholarship for it. I considered going back to Uniport where I got my anatomy degree as I heard that schools normally consider their graduates for MBBS admissions, but I also heard Uniport would give more preference to their JUPEB graduates from Ashgroove than DE so there's a massive chance I may not get in. Like the quota for DE is normally shared with JUPEB guys, and more would come from JUPEB since they pay so much money for their program. I considered Unical too because I saw they accept a 2.2 in anatomy for direct entry, and so it might be easier to get in with my 2.1. Someone was also suggesting I try Unilorin, which might be cool although I don't know whether I actually stand a chance, or FUL where I'm serving (but since the medical school just started, I'm a bit skeptical about applying, and I don't think I'd like to school there considering that I served there). Is there any other school I should consider with my grade which would not be so expensive, and maybe a bit closer to my family in Port Harcourt? Although I really wouldn't mind going far if the chances of me getting there would be high. Also, would the calendar of the school be fast enough? I know RSU has a very fast calendar and they don't go on ASUU strikes. Please give me your advice. I'd really appreciate you. Thank you! |

ThatWriterBoy:Your best bet is Rivers State Uni or Uniport since you are from there. I will advice u get in contact with medical students from either schools especially the direct entry students to make further research, try to know the number they admit and how they admit. ( U can also add Unical, UNN to your research, I dont think u stand a good chance in Unilorin) I will also advice u learn a skill that should be able to help u with expenses (ur writing skill should also help u get gigs). Plus there are scholarships too or Nelfund. Finally your age should not be a stopping factor. |

ThatWriterBoy:Hello sir, I got a few things to say regarding this post. 1. Don't mind accreditation. FUL sounds like a good option, the tuition may not be as expensive as other centres. And, since it's a new school, competition may not be as tight as in other schools. Accreditation will come, one way or the other. I know there are some schools that have made students stay back for over 10 years (eg, UniAbuja, BSU), but still don't worry. Just start and see how things go. Another thing is look for schools that favour your catchment area. 2. I get that you don't want to be a burden. I understand this. But, trust me, don't let this hinder you. Your schooling, somehow, is a family project. If you make it out, you'll be a blessing to lots of other members in your family. To give back, you can look out for one or two struggling persons in the family and support. I suggest you sit your family down and outline your plan. Most times, they'll support you. They may not give you everything....but they'll take some financial pressures off your shoulders. Also discuss with uncles and aunts, cousins that you feel are positioned to be of help. I don't see anything wrong with this. .. MBBS is an intensive program. I always advise people to have a structured financial plan before going in. And, as you mentioned, keep your eyes open for scholarships. Thank God you're from Rivers State. Best wishes, doc. May God bless the paths before you, and give you wisdom to navigate through. Amen. |

ThatWriterBoy:I would say you have higher chances in Uniport or Unical…. Unilorin would depend on how solid your grades are or a strong durable connection. You lack both the ethnic and religious factors which may work against you. Leave FUL for teenagers, new schools tend to waste one’s prime years. By the way I started again at 26 and I’m a couple of months away from being a doctor |

1. How many times do you check WhatsApp for lecture updates per day. 2. Assuming your course rep drops important updates at random hours of the day,how do you handle the time of notifications with your focused reading period so as to balance distractions with your goals. |
