Interesting thread....but I guess the originator of the thread and its major contributors are no longer active on Nairaland.

I'd have loved to hear from all the early contributors to know how far they've come and what learning points they would like to share.

I'm keenly interested in hearing their stories.

felixzo1:
the recommended spacing for oil palm is 9 meters by 9 meters.giving 143 trees per hectare.(100m by 100m)oil palm reaches it maturity by 8 to 9 years. (oil palm start producing 3 yrs after planting)when fully matured a tenera spp. oil palm can give 12 fruits a year weighing between 35 to 45 kg,oil yield per hectare can reach 7200 liters .(http://www.fao.org/docrep/006/t0309e/T0309E03.htm)(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil)my 7 m by 7m spacing is high density spacing and often not recommended. what you heard from nifor was 8.7metres not 8.7 feet. nobody will tell you to plant a tree at that density. watch the video i posted earlier and read the recommended links, before you make a big mistake.
Thanks

🌱 Affordable Farmland in Ogun State: 5 Things You Must Know Before Buying 🏡

Are you considering buying farmland in Ogun State? Whether for agribusiness, land banking, or estate development, investing in land is a smart move. But before you make that purchase, here are five key things you must know to ensure a smooth transaction.

1️⃣ Location Matters 📍

Not all farmlands are the same! Some are closer to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, making them ideal for future urban development, while others are more remote and better suited for large-scale farming. Choose based on your goals!

2️⃣ Land Titles & Documentation 📜

Avoid trouble by ensuring the land has the right legal documents—whether it's a C of O, Registered Survey, or Deed of Assignment. Buying untitled land might be cheaper but comes with risks!

3️⃣ Soil & Water Availability 💧

The fertility of the land is crucial! Ogun State offers rich, arable soil and access to water bodies, which is essential for profitable farming. Always inspect the land before buying.

4️⃣ Future Development & Appreciation 🚀

Land in strategic locations appreciates quickly! As industries, estates, and businesses expand into Ogun State, demand for land will skyrocket. Buying now means you can resell at a higher price later!

5️⃣ Pricing & Payment Flexibility 💰

Prices start from ₦600K per acre, with flexible payment plans available. Compared to Lagos, farmland in Ogun is affordable, profitable, and growing in value daily!

📢 Don’t Wait – Invest Now!

Foreign investors are buying in bulk, and land prices will only go up. Secure your farmland today before it’s too late!

The most irritating and annoying aspect of buying illicit or unimproved oil palm seedlings from hawkers is the result and effects ( yield and variegated fruit forms) which will manifest after 4 to 6 years when you ought to be smiling to the Bank.

There are trendy names, including supergene, in the oil palm plantation business currently. Please wear your binoculars before you get trapped. Pure Semantics!!!🌳👀💡

Hey brother, good day sir. Long time.

Thank you for lending your voice to shed light on these cacophony of oil palm trees vendors without proven farms. I will stay with the proven NIFOR stuff when I am ready. At least it is proven to perform over the years.

How is NIFOR sir?

Starting an oil palm plantation requires significant investment and planning.

Here are key details:

1. *Land preparation*:
Oil palm thrives in tropical climates with adequate rainfall. Ensure suitable land (typically 20-50 hectares or more) for a large scale and a small farm of one acre
.
Note : A successful business starts with a well detailed business plan and a feasibility study that will help you to understand the process procedure and expected revenue of the farm/ business.

2. *Seedling procurement*: Source high-quality seedlings from reputable suppliers to avoid regrets.

3. *Planting*: Plant seedlings (usually 150-155 per hectare) with these spacing (9x9m or 8.5x8.5m).

4. *Maintenance*: Maintenance is key to every successful farm. Regularly remove weeds, prune, fertilize, and control pests/ diseases when required

5. *Harvesting*: Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) are harvested 3-4 years after planting, with peak production at 7-36 years.
6. *Processing*: Sell FFB to mills or set up an extraction facility (requires significant investment). It is more profitable when you have your small-scale oil palm processing mill.

7. *Market*: Oil palm products include Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Palm Kernel Oil (PKO), and Palm Kernel Cake (PKC).palm kernels flakes (PKF) and brooms for household users.

*Costs*: Clearing, felling, marking, pegging distribution of palm in the field, digging, and planting all requires money.

Land preparation: The land should be well prepared with access road for easy evaluation of FFB during harvest.

Seedlings: 150/ 155 per hectare Depends on the measurement
Labour and maintenance: You will require a significant amount of labour to maintain your farm in a year

*Potential revenue*:

- Average yield: 18-28 and as high as 36 tons FFB/hectare/year

Price: Depends on your location.
