Before you rent a new place, take time to understand the source of income of the landlord. Many landlords don’t have any active source of income aside from the house you’re about to rent. To survive, they depend entirely on tenants for their livelihood. This often leads to frequent rent increases, unnecessary billings, and constant financial demands that can frustrate your peace of mind. Choosing a landlord who has other income streams can make a huge difference in your rental experience. A landlord who isn’t desperate for the property’s income is more likely to respect agreements, maintain the property properly, and avoid making tenants the financial pillar of their personal life. This isn’t just about finding shelter; it’s about securing your peace, stability, and sanity in a place you’ll call home. |

![]() Good advice. And also, any compound that a landlord lives in,avoid it. And lest I forget, any compound that has a landlady is also a big red flag too. But then again,a compound that belongs to a polygamous family,my brothers and sisters, don't ever consider renting such an apartment. |

Sonnobax15:Aje! You have said it all. The last paragraph sounds like face me I face you house |
| Re: Before You Rent That House! by JuanDeDios: 8:56pm On Feb 05 |
Goo0dHardDick:The is largely true. I've experienced a landlady whose only income was the house. It wasn't pretty. Then I had a landlord who had many properties and thriving businesses. Best landlord I ever had. But I also had a landlord who was very well educated and had a business and was very badly behaved. He and his wife were very churchy and talked a lot about grace, but they had no single grace to give anyone. |

Leave that thing, a wicked person is a wicked person. Even if the landlord has houses in the 36states of Nigeria he can still frustrate tenants if WICKEDNESS is his middle name. |

You said it all. Thumbs all. |
| Re: Before You Rent That House! by LabStores: 9:00pm On Feb 05 |
JuanDeDios:Most times, the person that actually built the house is even dead. The landlady will often be 2nd or 3rd wife who inherited the property. Many times, landladies like that are the most evil and wicked. Frustrating tenants is usually their hobby. |

There is one landlady in Rumuogholu in Obioakpor LGA of Rivers state, she has K legs. Avoid that woman with everything you can think of. Avoid her house. She's everything the OP described. |

This is a good advice. Some Landlords have more than one house, yet they are very greedy and they don't wish their tenants to also become landlord, but to continue to live in their house and pay their rent. |

Sonnobax15:Some landlords are people who know road.. |
| Re: Before You Rent That House! by NwaliE01: 9:06pm On Feb 05 |
Sonnobax15:I lived with my tenants until I moved after few years. They loved having us around. There was no issue for once because I understood their rights and they tamed their excesses to an acceptable level. I think if we're all humane, there would be no issue at all whether living in the same plot with landlord or not. Treating other people's property as yours is the easiest way to curtail one's excesses which we all have. |

Also... Check the power supply payment history ( NEPA bill history)... very important. |
| Re: Before You Rent That House! by nesgeeek(m): 9:07pm On Feb 05 |
This is absolutely correct. I've been a victim. My former landlord an ex policeman extorted me and my neighbors a lot last year. Infact he made us understand openly that landlords don't pay bills where tenants leave. Myself and my neighbor couldn't wait for our rent to expire before we evacuate the house. He show us shege with unnecessary billing. |

JuanDeDios:Different people with different ways: some use their pastors, alfas, babalawos or whatever. Just make sure to confirm it BEFORE you pay your rent so that you would know whether to avoid the house, neutralize any negative power found or just pack in if the coast is clear. I actually learnt this the bitter way last year. |
