In early February 2026, residents of St. Petersburg, Russia, were left mesmerized as they gazed upward to see what appeared to be four moons hanging in the night sky. This surreal display, which looked more like a scene from a science fiction film than reality, was captured in viral videos that quickly spread across social media, showing a central moon flanked by three other glowing orbs. While the sight initially sparked confusion and whispers of a "glitch in the sky," experts were quick to provide a natural explanation for the phenomenon.
The spectacle was caused by an atmospheric optical event known as paraselene, or more commonly, "moon dogs". Much like their daytime counterpart, the sun dog, moon dogs occur when moonlight passes through thin, high-altitude cirrus clouds. These clouds are filled with millions of tiny, hexagonal ice crystals that act like miniature prisms. When the light hits these crystals at precise angles—typically 22 degrees—it refracts and reflects, creating bright spots on either side of the actual moon.
This particular display was rare because the extreme winter chill, with temperatures dropping below -20°C, created the perfect conditions for a higher number of these "mock moons" to appear simultaneously. The vertical height of the glowing spots depended on how much the crystals "wobbled" as they drifted through the air, with larger crystals producing taller and more vivid shapes. While the colors are often pale or white, some observers noted faint hints of red and blue at the edges of the glow. The event has served as a fascinating lesson for schools and communities, showing that even the most otherworldly sights can be explained by the simple, beautiful physics of ice and light.
