Minister of Works, David Umahi, says he would resign if the ongoing Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Road project fails quality test and is found to be substandard.

Umahi made this vow on Wednesday during budget defence before a joint session of the National Assembly, declaring readiness to subject the work to independent testing.

DAILY POST reports that several questions were raised during the session over the award of a section of the project to a company some legislators described as unknown and previously associated with generator sales.

Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, demanded to know why the contract was taken from an established construction firm and awarded to another company, arguing that the company was not widely known in road construction.

Responding, Umahi dismissed concerns about the contractor’s background, insisting that the focus should be on the quality of work delivered rather than perceptions.

“I’m just hearing about Maikano for the first time. Whether they are selling goats or cows, they are doing well.

I am satisfied with the quality of work on the Abuja–Kaduna stretch, and I challenge you to an inspection.

“Bring the best of your concrete testers. If you test it and it fails, I will throw in the towel,” the minister said.

Person wey nor fit answer how much does a project cost per kilometer naim, go con allow himself be subject to scrutiny of the quality.

Time always tell how good or bad a road is - then posterity will judge you.

For the engineers in the house, it is advised to pave the concrete roads with asphalt to make it smoother to drive on because all the concrete roads are I have driven on that this administration built are all bumpy

You won't. The road that you revoked from Julius Berger and re-awarded to Infiouest construction company that nobody has ever heard of, is already beginning to fail in portions. The new concrete road being done now is bumpy, slow, poorly done and does not compare to the new asphalt technology Julius Berger introduced on that road with a 50-year warranty. What's worse is that it was re-awarded for almost the same sum Julius Berger was requesting for as contract variation due to naira devaluation. The only explanation is that Infiouest is a front for Umahi and he wants kickback.

Tinubu must realise that the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road has sentimental value to Northerners. Aside from its strategic importance, it is one of the 3 legacy projects of late President Muhammadu Buhari. The other two being Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Second Niger Bridge. Despite the nepotism tag on Buhari, he completed the other two outside his own region while hoping his successor will do the same. Rather, Tinubu came and is solely focused on the 15 trillion naira coastal road in Lagos.

Umahi I've seen that company break and redoing places that have cracked on that road, better send a supervisor that will monitor them 24/7.

When are you resigning, because it has already failed. Some sections have even develop sizeable portholes.

You terminated the contract with a well established company with years of experience, only to hand it over to an unknown company that neither knows their left or right.

If at this point you are still using a mere project that shouldn't even be considered an achievement to rate your performance then you obviously don't even know what the people engaged you for.

Normally, you are to contract very reliable road construction company and develop a strong contract with them and the federal government with the construction company providing you a guarantee of more than 5 years. Anything goes wrong the company is to be held responsible

The money is not yours nor the government but the people. Building or overseeing a road project should mean nothing now in this country.

He merely brought the Abakaliki standard he did in Ebonyi to national limelight while being arrogant about it. All his concrete roads in Ebonyi have all failed, by the way. Even Nwufiru, his successor, had to redo the concrete airport runway that he Umahi initially built. Who builds an airport runway with concrete, for God's sake?!
