JAPA: The Rush To Move Abroad Should Stop by uche87(op): 12:03am On Feb 28
Traveling abroad is a beautiful experience when done the right way. The exposure is lovely and exciting. The culture shock is an eye-opener. It gives us the chance to learn, unlearn, and re-learn. It gives credence to the saying that learning is a lifelong process. That being said, living abroad isn't for everybody when compared with visiting abroad. If you can afford it, it is enjoyable and pleasurable. Those few days, weeks, or months could educate your mind more than a school.

Living abroad is an entirely different reality. Some people never fit in. Most times, fitting in depends on the phase or status you have achieved in life. If you have a high-paying job, relocating to start all over might not be good for you. If it’s a transfer from one good job to another, then it’s a blessing.

Additionally, if you own a thriving business, you are better off growing it in Nigeria. One of the ways to create wealth is through ownership. Business can be unpredictable in Nigeria, both positively and negatively. With the right connection and contract, an entrepreneur can sleep as a peasant and wake up on a throne with a gold crown.

In recent times, two of my friends in Nigeria who are doing well, to the best of my knowledge, believe their future lies abroad. These are comfortable men with promising businesses in Nigeria. Some of these moves are driven by women—people who can't zoom in on those glossy social media pictures of Nigerians abroad and see what is behind them. I took my time to ask them some strategic questions, and there was radio silence. This is because most people who relocate don't have a strong conviction that their decision is the right one.

The UK, especially, is an upgrade of Nigeria in terms of infrastructural facilities. In 2021, I met a former top bank official who relocated with his family. The man was generally sad. From his presentation, it was clear his wife engineered the move. He worked in a warehouse for a while before moving into healthcare. They gave him a bit of respect, but when he experienced verbal and physical assault by staff or patients, it hit him differently. He couldn't believe his eyes. He later had a stint as a care worker, organizing the personal care of elderly people. Note that care is just a fancy term for wiping bums. Let me add that I am not oblivious to the fact that people grow from blue-collar or transitional jobs to high-paying white-collar jobs. Testimonies abound.

People like this believe they are investing in the future of their children. This is largely true, but only time will tell. I have seen children of immigrants who have missed their way and ended up badly in social vices.

Apart from social media, some clerics also fuel the exodus from Nigeria. During an online service, a prophet declared that some people would be granted visas. The livestream erupted. "Amen!" "I receive it!" serenaded the entire space. I was shocked. In this age of radical nationalism, Africa might be barking up the wrong tree. The current way to gain popularity in Europe and America is to speak against migration. Rupert Lowe of the Reform Party UK is a good example. Nigel Farage is another one. These men are good students of President Donald Trump's school of thought.

Relocating abroad is just like the heavenly race. It is a personal decision. There is no guarantee it will work for you. Individual circumstances need to be critically considered.

I will give special consideration to people who have been kidnapped, escaped kidnapping, or are at risk of being kidnapped. If kidnappers have sent you a warning letter, like the residents of Kwara State, your emergency exit from Nigeria might be justified.

I agree with this post. It reminds me of that line from Madagascar, about how an African lion cannot just become a Canadian lion by being moved to Canada. The environment may change, but the lion’s nature, instincts, and conditioning do not instantly change with it. It was shaped by a particular climate and ecosystem. Simply placing it somewhere new does not automatically guarantee it will thrive.
In the same way, many people leave their countries believing the grass is greener somewhere else, or imagining another country as some kind of Eldorado where life is automatically easier. It is natural to be attracted to stronger economies, better infrastructure, or higher salaries. But every country has its own pressures and difficulties. A higher income can come with a higher cost of living. Better systems can also come with stricter rules and intense competition. Loneliness, cultural differences, and the loss of family support can weigh heavily.
Running away from challenges at home does not mean challenges disappear. Often, they are simply replaced with different ones. If someone moves without realistic expectations, they may discover that success still requires hard work, sacrifice, and adaptation. A new location does not erase personal struggles or instantly transform circumstances.
This does not mean migration is wrong. For many people, it can open real opportunities. But it should be a thoughtful decision, not an escape based on the belief that everything abroad is automatically better. Real progress usually comes from preparation, resilience, and clear thinking, whether someone chooses to stay and build at home or move elsewhere with a full understanding of what that choice truly involves.

People move for different reasons. Most times their current location cannot afford them the kind of life they need.
Re: JAPA: The Rush To Move Abroad Should Stop by laivwire(m): 9:25am On Feb 28
The fact that people have thriving businesses doesn't mean all is rosy for them. Lots of Nigerian entrepreneurs look okay and thriving on the surface but are seriously battling to keep the lights on under crazy pressure from loans ,bad staff, poor infrastructure and an oppressionist regime. They would rather bail out before their businesses are shuttered or shame comes upon them.

UK is not upgraded Nigeria, it is light years ahead. If you are gifted enough to thrive in Nigeria's harsh environment, you would get better returns for your creativity and talents in developed countries. That's an indisputable fact.

But as you should know, opportunity and talent is not enough anywhere, you need good timing/luck too.

Japa if you can but take it as just another risky venture. Always protect your back end.

Africans mostly nigerians move abroad to earn and retire back to Africa to spend it.
Staying abroad with your salary will eventually make you poor(average), but you will enjoy good amenities.

But then some people don't care about being poor abroad, as far it gives dem good social amenities(house, light, transport, water, security, school, health, food), they will live and die there.

Why are you attacking Nigerians like it's their fault. The engery should have been used to write an article criticizing Nigerian politicians and their corrupt practices. You must be joking. Infact you are a wicked enabler of corruption. I'm sure you haven't eaten properly this week but because of your short sightedness and envy you prefer people stay here and suffer with you.

Do you know the crazy population in Nigeria? Do you know the zillions of dollars that have been mismanaged? You want peoole to die in abject poverty without experiencing proper societal civilization, proper working infrastructure and working amenities ? Who is this guy? Seyi laws cousin? This guy is paid. I'm sure you are close to 40 if not over 40, never experienced 24 hours light and you wrote this useless article using a generator that powered your phone.

That's why I keep saying alot of Nigerians are very foolish. This guy is a typical example

If the UK is upgraded Nigeria then that mean 70% of Europe and some state in US are not different from Nigeria
Re: JAPA: The Rush To Move Abroad Should Stop by Emdi1914: 12:46pm On Feb 28
Nonsense! If your country was good enough, a lot of people won't seek to leave.
Its not just about money, some people seek to live in a clan that is more organized, sane, neat, environmentally healthy, secure etc.

If any Nigerian government can make all Nigerian politicians and all their cabinet members to experience what the citizens are going through… no Nigerian will travel abroad again….

If Tinubu can subject himself and his family members to go through what an average Nigerian is going through daily in Nigeria…. No one will ever want to japa again out of Nigeria because Nigeria will automatically become better over night….
Re: JAPA: The Rush To Move Abroad Should Stop by Jman06(m): 1:00pm On Feb 28
Every Nigerian is a potential kidnap victim, so your last paragraph is one of the major reasons Nigerians are running away!

Also, there's a lot of uncertainties about Nigeria's political future! The southeast (Igbos) have been repeatedly denied the presidency of Nigeria and even told that they don't belong. Our youths are systematically marginalised and denied jobs and promotions in Nigeria. They have to work extra hard to even gain admission into public schools in a country that is supposedly theirs !

Given the foregoing, it is a smart move for Igbos to relocate their children and families abroad where they could have a level-playing field to thrive. Many of them have succeeded in making names for themselves in various walks of life abroad; from education to healthcare, entertainment, research, armed forces etc. They were able to achieve such feats abroad whilst they could not in Nigeria!

So you see? The gains of japa is far more than whatever disadvantages there is in it.

Trust me when I say social amenities here can't be overemphasized. Imagine buying a bus ticket that can last you 24 hours and can take you anywhere within your city.

God punish our political leaders
Re: JAPA: The Rush To Move Abroad Should Stop by ZombieTAMER: 1:10pm On Feb 28
As long as the likes of Buhari and Tinubu are presidents of Nigeria.

The youths has no option than to leave the country for them to survive..

Tinubu can't create jobs
he can't stop insecurity and create enabling environment for investors
he can't stop corruption
he can't boost the economy and standard of living

there's no future in a country where snake bite kills people in 2026 and the president patronizes medical tourism in Europe.

These evil leaders go abroad and see this things, but can never replicate same in the country..

Go to Lagos, half of the youths there are motor park touts, collecting different levies from motorists, security, king of boys, balee, union levies etc it's madness

very dirty and disorganized system, markets on every pedestrian road, every bus stop, stench of piles of shit and dirt.

we're not ready..
The world has left Nigeria behind

leave now if you have the means
Re: JAPA: The Rush To Move Abroad Should Stop by osuofia2(m): 1:20pm On Feb 28
Op, so we should wait to get kidnap letter before considering moving abroad, you go wicked walahi, there are lots of people that were kidnapped without letter from the kidnappers.
If you have the means to move abroad do so, travelling is not all about the money but for sanity, society that works, you don't have to know anybody before you get, admission, jobs, etc
