It really saddens my heart when the Hausa people are punished for the sins of the Fulani simply because many Nigerians cannot differentiate between these two highly distinct ethnic groups. The Hausas are peaceful, loving, caring, and very hardworking people. They do not cause trouble wherever they go; they are generally easygoing and friendly.

The Hausas are not the killer herdsmen, nor do they go about kidnapping people for ransom. The typical Hausaman is your familiar “Aboki” — the mai shayi (tea seller), mai sugar, mai ruwa, mai rago, or the daily-needs provisions seller in your community. Hausa people do not live in the bush; they are city dwellers and are generally well-mannered.

We, the southerners, should stop punishing the Hausa people for the crimes of the Fulani. They are not the same people.
