Hi medics, my nephew sent a long list of foreign textbooks to buy or source for the pdf for the preclinical courses, but honestly, I don't get it. Shouldn't his lecturers slides and handouts be more important than the textbooks (he said both the scholars and seniors told them to hold their textbooks dear). I thought the textbooks would be for more detailed reading and should be according to his outline and not cover to cover which might burn him out, so pls I need your suggestions on how y'all scaled through this level? |

chidoziekingsley:I guess he's just starting 200lv, 2 or 3 textbooks are fine, the rest when he resumes, pdf will be flying. You can do well to get him a tab or laptop. Before buying a text book he should check if its one that fits his style there's a high chance of buying a book only for it to be covered by dust. Personally, I love hardcopies but with the overwhelming materials here and expenses, it is partenient to gravitate through pdfs. From 200lv till now I haven't owned a hardcopy bought personally, I've my reasons though. If you have the resource, you can get one for each courses though |

Cardiojosh:Pls, which should he take more important, the textbooks or his lecturer's materials because i believe covering the big textbooks cover to cover will lead to burn out. |

chidoziekingsley:Depends on the school. His seniors are better positioned to answer, most times lecturer materials are more of guide on what to focus on in textbooks, other times they are the bible from which the students will be tested. So it depends |

Sultan5:I also needed this, thanks. Even if it's just as a guide but basically I should not just read the textbooks blindly(cover to cover)? |

Danielmac:Medical school is about working smart. You need to know how your lecturer operates and adapt accordingly. The way you prepare for lecturer A may be different from lecturer B. Thats why your senior colleagues are your most important resource. They have this information. Second resource are past questions they will give you an idea of how your lecturers approach setting questions for each topic. What do they ask regularly (high yield stuffs), how do they ask it, where do they ask it from (uslme, materials, textbook stuff). Attend lectures, most times these lecturers gives hint on where you should focus on, likely questions they can set and how to approach it. When going to war you need information on which you can strategize. Get these info and adapt as you go. Obviously reading your textbook front to cover is the best thing to do however where is the time and how many of those stuff will you be able to reproduce. |

chidoziekingsley:Wisdom is to go quickly through the lecturers materials then move to textbooks for better understanding, if needs be, sometimes a lecturer notes is word for word of a particular textbook. Understanding where mcq questions come from is important too, for my school by just reading your Anatomy notes extensively you're pass properly, notes and atlas suffice for a very good score, but that is not the case for physiology, to pass with high score you need textbooks too. Understanding how your school operate is also important. |

Good day everyone Please what are your opinions about UI post utme? I scored 309 in this year's jamb which requires me to score really high in the post utme. Also I'm not thinking of changing institution because I had C parallel in my olevel which is a disadvantage in most institutions. |

horla10:To be honest, you can't land federal universities with such average rate score, opt for state universities or private universities if you can afford it. Chances of entering federal to study medicine with such average score is slim. |

| Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by NL1960: 11:31am On Apr 23 |
Darealrick:Are you from Lagos state?. Kingsley1169:Getting Medicine in LASU is not easy if you are not from Lagos state. There are people that have scored above 300 and did not get it. Medicine in LASU is mainly politics. It is a state university and so Lagos state indigenes have preference. |
