Just like Nairaland... They don't want to evolve. They believe they control the market, not acknowledging that users(consumers) will determine the fate of the company. The forum was created to serve the needs of others, then when you think using bots to fight free speech and even to drown comments in confusion, you end up imploding like Blackberry. While Nairaland is still in the market is because there is no competition in the Nigerian market. Building an advance forum website and app is not enough. What a CEO will need is finances to run adverts and promote the forum and even the introduction of paying verified accounts amongst others. Take the one cent. |

I completely disagree, even till date Watsapp is a mess.. BBM is still far ahead.. It will interest u to know that Watsapp is mulling a return to pin for chatting instead of phone number.. Nigerians especially left blackberry because if a simply reason, E-mail, they find it hard to navigate the restoration of their account into a new blackberry phone.. Another reason is that u can't beat the crowd.. Android is an open gateway for everyone to contribute to latest program... Programs are coded from everywhere ND when the creator refuses to sell outrightly to android, android makes them a staffer with management of the particular app still in their care.. Android went crazy trying to gain market..ND that is why it's still a leader till this day .. meanwhile blackberry followers the iPhone model of making thing Personal and if a good app comes up ,they only offer to buy out ND not bring u in.. These are the core reason it collapse never cause of time of sale of it's messenger, that is childish thinking... |

The dual SIM evolution was also a major factor that worked against the dominance of Nokia. |

Nokia and BB didn’t try to evolve. They also derailed on their value propositions. Brands’ main goal of being market leader always is to solve certain problems that have never been solved, in any market. If a brand is in a market and it’s solving mundane problems, such brand will be overtaken. The notion works in all businesses. Check out how Opay and co took over our banking space. They came to solve problems that our conventional banks can’t solve in commercial banking. Check out why everyday is still Day 1 at Amazon. It’s their obsession for customers. The moment you are ready to satisfy and solve all problems your customers may have, that’s the moment you will become a category leader in your market. Multilinks, Visaphone and co came with CDMA tech, which is still better than GSM till today but they didn’t allow customers to use their SIM with the type of phone they like. They brought very substandard phones with the lines, thinking Nigerian customers are crude or don’t deserve better phone. They lost out to GSM providers because you can use your SIM in your desired type of phone. Assuming BlackBerry allowed people to use their phone number as their BB Pin, they would have stayed longer in the market. BB PIN is hard to cram and not easy to store as a contact. It was first all coming with their phone as inbuilt (like MEI) but it later started coming as downloadable with their app. BB should have allowed early smart phones phones like LG, Samsung to download their BB app. Android won’t have come to take over easily. Blackberry is an app (software) like WhatsApp but we were cajoled into believing that it’s a phone ( hardware) because they were also branding a phone called Blackberry. BB’s management should have unbundled the two. Sebi we have Google Pixel as a phone ( hardware) which is till running on Android ( software). Same Android is running on other brands of phones. If BB had allowed people to download their app on another phone but not restricted it to their own brand of phone, Android would have struggled to come in. It was this and more that Android studied and made sure you only use your phone number as ID and you are also able to download their app to other phone. Similar thing killed hotmail messenger and Yahoo messenger. Those messengers came before BB but Yahoo’s executives didn’t deem it fit to allow it to be downloadable on phones. They could have even gone further to have their own brand of phone called Yahoo phone. There are much to this but let me stop here. Every business leader needs deeper knowledge of business analysis. You don’t just sit on a board of a business and think that’s all. Those managing businesses too need this knowledge to be able to assess so many things about a business or a brand. |

bigpicture001:Why Android is able to hold top spot till now is because it’s owned by Google and it’s using the power of it’s search engine for research and data mining for sale. So android controls nearly all that happens in that value chain. Users pay next-to-nothing, using that app but they mine your data and sell to advertisers which pay them hugely. Finland is the owner of Nokia and they have always been a conservative country, right from evolution of man. Their pack of sugar designed since 1960s is still been used till today. They always feel that once a brand has gained ground, there’s no need changing things about such brand. It’s there crop of current generation that is trying to change that perception. There was an interview where the then Nokia CEO was crying when they asked him why did he allow Nokia to slip by. He said they did nothing wrong to the brand. And truly to them, they did nothing wrong at that moment. A lot of CEO’s who go to business schools also need various industry experiences. They teach a fraction of business analysis in all MBA program, whether Executive MBA or Mini MBA or normal MBA. There are packs of textbooks by great authors that business managers need to have and be reading. It’s from these mistakes that iPhone took its learning and it keeps evolving. So it tough to copy iPhone because before you setup a manufacturing line for their iPhone 17, they are already releasing iPhone 18. They make sure they carry out surveys from customers ( they may not come to Nigerian customers) to know what features they expect next from their products and their research teams go into work. Once they are able to have a breakthrough, they patent such invention ( if it hasn’t been patented). |
