I replied "I am not yet married oh. I'm still single". Everybody including him laughed.

I get really surprised when I see /hear unmarried people say they are not single simply because they are in a relationship.

Any lady with a partner (Boyfriend or Fiance) or any man with a partner is NOT single, she/he may be best described as UNMARRIED. A single person is one who is yet to commit to another, once a person is committed to another, he/she ceases to be single.

The OP's post isn't referring to one's marital status, he referred to social status as a whole. Of course, no one is married unless they are married. But no one is single simply because they are unmarried. Some may be in relationship, some engaged (promise fo marry), some in complicated relationships, and others single with no commitment to anyone. The word UNMARRIED is best fit for people who are not married officially, NOT single.

What's the big deal about being married?

Been married for almost a decade and I don't really see what the big deal is about it.

It amazes me when people assume getting married is some sort of achievement or some superior social status.

If being single makes you happy, be damn single.

If living together without any sort of commitment is what you guys want and agree to do, then do the damn thing!
