Hello Nairalanders,

Please I need your honest advice.

I am considering buying a Toyota Corolla 2010 as my first car, but the one I am seeing is manual transmission. I know most people prefer automatic, especially in city traffic, but I also hear that manual cars can be cheaper to maintain, more fuel-efficient, and sometimes more durable if handled well.

My concern is that this will be my first car, and I am still thinking about whether manual transmission is a good idea for a beginner, especially with Nigerian traffic and daily movement.

Please for those who have used manual cars before, especially Corolla manual:

Is it advisable for a first-time car owner?

Is the maintenance easier or cheaper than automatic?

Will it be stressful in traffic?

Does it affect resale value badly?

What should I check before buying a manual Corolla 2010?

I will appreciate your sincere advice before making payment.

Thank you.
Very wise!
So far you learnt how to drive with it

Are we still talking about manual cars in 2026.
My brother manual car is an outdated design, same way you have blender in our homes compared to previously owning manual grinder for our cooking.
Just learn it during driving school to know it .

Haha op already made up his mind after 5 comments.
Of course, people who don't know how to drive manual transmission will advise you against it. 🙄

Yes, if after learning to drive with manual, you purchased an automatic car, why then did you undergo a driving lesson with manual.

In the UK they're still manufacturing manual cars till tomorrow, and lots of people are still using it, it's only the problem of bad roads that makes a lot of Nigerian using Automatic cars, as for me, am still rocking manual cars anytime anyway! grin

Many latest cars are still being manufactured with manual gears, but they are becoming less common every year. Most manufacturers now prefer automatic, CVT, or electric drivetrains because they are easier to drive, more fuel-efficient, and better suited for modern traffic conditions.

Manual transmission is now mostly found in:

Sports cars

Performance cars

Some off-road SUVs and pickup trucks

A few budget-friendly models in some countries

Examples of newer manual cars still available include:

Toyota GR86

Honda Civic Si

Mazda MX-5 Miata

Ford Mustang

Jeep Wrangler

Toyota Tacoma

Porsche 911 GT3

In countries like Nigeria, manual cars are still quite common because:

They are usually cheaper to buy

Repairs are often less expensive

Many drivers believe manuals handle rough roads better

Fuel economy can sometimes be better depending on driving style

However, globally, manual cars are gradually disappearing, especially with the rise of electric vehicles, which do not use traditional gears at all. Some reports show that only a small percentage of new cars now come with manual transmission options.

Stick shift saves life, literally. You'll get the full experience when going long distance, if you stay in Lagos, traffic ( the real one called go slow) will drive you nuts if you drive a stick shift.

it's wise and advisable as a first time car owner to get automatic car

Use that to master driving before going for manual
Where did you hear this kind of theory?
Learn to drive Automatic first before Manual?
That's awkward advise.
If you learn to drive Manual, you can drive Automatic.
But if you learn auto first, you will have problems with Manual while learning.

Go for manual. The best driver- car experience comes with it. It makes you pay attention to the sound of the engine. You'll know when the engine is happy and when it's groaning. I don't know how to explain more on this. Experienced users already understand.

My dear brother, let me give you the honest truth.
When you compare owning a Manual and Automatic car and you put the pros and cons against each other, believe me Manual car are at advantage.
The only advantage of Automatic over Manual is that you don't need to change gears, just put your leg on acceleration and drive.

But comparatively, Manual cars are at advantage than Auto.
I speak from experience because I own both Manual and Automatic cars and I drive the two car week in week out. Anytime, I feel more at home with the Manual.

1. If you learn to drive Manual car, you can easily drive an Automatic without going to learn. But if you learn to drive Automatic first, you won't be able to drive Manual unless you learn afresh.
2. Manual cars don't have gear box issues. Gear box complications with Automatic cars can be frustrating.
3. Manual cars are easier and cheaper to maintain and less cumbersome than Automatic.
4. When you have key starter or battery issues with Manual cars, you can easily push and start the car. You can't do so with automatic cars.
5. In situation of break failures, it is far easier to control a manual car than an automatic. Simply change gear from high to low gear in manual and the car responds faster. But that is not so in automatic.
6. With a Manual car, you are more in control of the car than in Automatic. Manual gives you power behind the wheel which the Automatic doesn't.

Forget the talk of Manual being hard to drive. I tell you very well, those saying such thrash only know how to drive Automatic, they can't or have not driven manual. Ask anyone that has driven both manual and automatic, they will tell you that the only advantage Automatic has over manual is that you don't need to change gears and it is easier in traffic. Aside that, manual cars are far more advantageous than Automatic.
I have given you the advantages above.

I am not particularly talking about the driving part but the safety and gaining confidence on road with first car.

There is anxiety sometimes when changing gear most especially in traffic, the calmness and confidence need to be mastered before enjoying manual car.

Go for it bro , its not that difficult to drive it, fuel is expensive , any car that will reduce fuel consumption

Owning a car is no longer a luxury, if it won't solve economic problem for you don't buy it. Manual cars are cheaper to maintain and it consume much lesser fuel.

My fuel cost is now over 300k per month excluding maintenance. At this point I would choose keke napep over rolls-royce because its no longer about the luxury , its about how it effect my life, my business, my savings. There lots of meetings i now miss because I don't want to waste fuel. If keke napep can ply highway at this point, I don't mind getting a keke

Dude, be honest and tell me, do you drive a manual? Yes or No.

I am almost sure you have never driven a Manual car and that is why you are talking about anxiety with changing gears in traffic.
There is absolutely no big deal with changing gears in traffic if you learnt to drive Manual cars. Infact, you can change gears with your eyes close and unconsciously if you have been driving manual for over 3 months.

See most of you that learned to drive Automatic without learning to drive Manual first always come with these kinds of crappy talk.
If you go to driving school, they will advise you to learn to drive Manual instead of automatic. E get why.
They use Manual to teach you how to drive.

The reason is that when you use a Manual car, you are learning to "Drive a Car" .
But when you use an Automatic car, you are learning to "Move a car".

All you people driving automatic cars, only know how to move a car . Go back and learn how to drive a car with Manual.

My neighbor had a terrible experience some years back. His wife was in labour at midnight and needed to rush to the hospital.
His automatic car couldn't start. I had travelled when he called for help. I told him to go collect my car keys and drive his wife to hospital. Lo and behold, he only knew how to drive Automatic and my car then was Manual. It was then it dawn on him that he did not actually know how to drive but only knew how to move an automatic car.

Go back and learn how to drive using a Manual drive which would give you an advantage of being able to drive both automatic and manual.

I really enjoyed the days of my driving manual cars, you’re in total control. Manual gears are far more durable, no issues, but slightly difficult to adapt to driving manual coz of balancing the clutch and all

I was advised to buy a manual car as my first car then, that I should drive it for one year and then buy Automatic thereafter, I bought the manual car, I taught myself how to drive from YouTube and other channels, but do you know that I fell deeply in love with this manual car, whenever I changed the gear I found my self dancing on the wheel but still don't know if am dancing to the media playing in the car or the gear switching.

Whenever I drove on my wife Automatic it would be like I was missing something in driving.

There's nothing beneficial for a new driver in manual gears.

But if you are already an experienced driver, go for manual as your first car, you will love every experience from it. It's cost saving too. It has good resale value, so long as it's Japanese, don't mind the nay sayers.

Manuel make a lot of sense if you a beginner, aside that if it a daily use in a city like lagos i did advice you go for auto. if you not a master of clutching you burn the clutch.

Nope, I answered him accordingly in my initial post that he should go for Manual if it is his first car because of the advantages of manual.

However, I am replied you based on your response about Manual being cumbersome and giving drivers anxiety in traffic.
That is why I asked you if you know how to drive Manual? And you seem to be avoiding answering the question.
Obviously, you don't know how to drive a manual car. So you are not in the position to give advise on what you don't know.
Like I said earlier, if you only drive Automatic car, you only know how to "move a car" . Go and learn to drive a manual car so you can confidently tell anyone that you can "Drive a car".
Knowing how to move a car is different from knowing how to drive a car.

Abeg to disagree with this assertion. It's better to start with manual driving first before automatic. You should have learn rigorous driving experience thru manual first.

I learnt thru that and I drive automatic later effortlessly without even training. So once you're perfect with manual you get get along with automatic not vice versa.

If it's for every day use in traffic city like Lagos. I would advise auto. Unless shifting gears in that particular car and model is very easy. Apart from the above, is manual for me .
Re: Is It Wise To Buy A Manual Transmission As A First Car? by AKWATGOLD1(m): 9:18am On May 12
@GideonG,
Manual transmission has alot advantages over automatic gear from my point of view in the underlisted below:
1. Manual transmission will make you active all the time when driving both short and long didtance journey
2. Manual transmission is easy to maintain when it comes with top-up ATF fluids and you know much is the cost of the original ATF fluids now
3. When your battery is down or cannot roll your engine, Manual transmission standout just push and start, you are back on the road again.
4. When there is flood on the road, Manual transmission standout by weathering the flood but not same for auto gear tramsmission.
5. Manual transmission is easy to diagnose by any sound mechanics because that what some of them use to learn work unlike Auto gear that their techinicians is try by error.
6. Resaleable value - You also buy as low price when compare with auto gear of same model vice versa
7. Fuel efficiency is at peak.

Manual isn't as bad as we describe it especially if it's not an overused vehicle.

I mostly drive around Lagos with manual Corolla and very cool. Mind you, I have Automatic at home
