koxyz:So, they should build and run the school with Lagos resources and give preference to people from other states who give preference to their own indigenes too, thereby leaving Lagos indigenes stranded. State and private institutions are at liberty to decide their preference criteria. Even federal schools have catchment areas |

Kog45:ASUU and intra-tribal discrimination is what is causing that. It's just sad. The same thing is begining to affect KWASU too. The latter used to the be fastest government school in Nigeria and immune to strike. I don't know of now sha. For distance learning and postgraduate education, ABU seems to have perfected it, and it's one of the top schools in Nigeria/West Africa when it comes to this system. In few years time, it'll be very obvious. |

Armaggedon:You're sha cooking the "facts" in your head to make you feel good. There is this saying that if you want to lure a Yoruba man, build a school where you want him to be. Cost is the least of the factors driving those people's choice of where to study. Typical SW parents will sell belongings and inheritance to send children to good schools. And yes, SW has most high quality schools. See that FUOYE dragging top spots with first generation schools? It's a 4th or 5th gen school established during Jonathan period. None of the ones established together with it can move close to it today. This shows the kind of attention those people give to schools. Quite a number of people from other geopolitical zones making waves had contact with SW education. Lolll. Check those top UTME scorers and see where they had their secondary education. There are other things the zone may not have, there is no perfect society but you see education, they have hacked it ![]() |

FreeStuffsNG:UNILAG is there only because of the population of Lagos residents amongst JAMB candidates, who ordinarily would prefer to stay in Lagos. But on the national average, OAU is still the most sought-after university in Nigeria |

Kog45:The implosion of federal institutions in Ilorin is a matter of time, definitely inevitable unless they correct the observation you raised above. UNILORIN and UITH especially are experiencing it already. They have almost grounded UITH. Institutions where merit is sacrificed for nepotism can never develop. Any developed and efficient system anywhere in the world today is being maintained mostly by competent "outsiders" and the host communities remain the highest gainers. Prof Oloyede, an Ogun man, took UNILORIN from the days where no one wanted them. The days when they beg people with admissions and projected it to be mentioned with A list schools. The school is witnessing gradual decline rn |

| Re: LASU, UNILAG, OAU… JAMB Names 10 Most Preferred Universities For 2026 (See List) by Saladdin: 9:57am On May 12 |
DesireV:You're spot on. Its just annoying to see the level of intra-tribalism going on. The school has good faculty and facilities no doubt, but till it eschews that nonsense, they'll continue to struggle. Sadly, they're rubbing that nonsense on KWASU too. KWASU was styled and operated like a typical North American University, the first VC really tried and he was a topdog from a Canadian Institution. The type of department, GPA system, Naming System, Lecturing System etc in KWASU used to be very similar to Canadian Federal Schools. It even used to have few faculties from the US/Canada. But when they infused that nonsense "omo Ilorin" bullshit, those great things have rapidly declined now. So sad that both schools used to be the fastest government institutions in Nigeria and immune of strike. But it's another case now. |

datola:some people are hardcore when it comes to nepotism. In a country where minimum wage cannot train one child confortably in subsidized institutions, someone is trying hard to rationalize high demand of cheap education as evidence of good education. The moe-run even argued about lesser distance, indirectly contradicting himself. |

datola:Is this based on an actual survey or mere assumptions severely limited by personal horizon? On another note, the student with the highest JAMB scores nationwide also opted for UNILAG. Sometimes it's all about other people's realities and perception of the choices placed in front of them and not about our own personal inclination. A top university sited in Lagos is still a top university and should not be watered down for that sole reason or any other personal reason. UNILAG, for example, is not only consistent in being a top choice but always been consistent across different ranking platforms. |

........the most important legacy of Obafemi Awolowo. The concept of free education he introduced, is still the reason while higher institutions in Yorubaland are the cheapest in Nigeria, if not Africa at large. This is one among other many reasons why their schools are sought after. Awolowo got this too right, and also early enough. It's worth emulating. |
