Have I Been Scammed? by Revealpanda(op): 12:34pm On May 20
I know absolutely nothing about cars and wanted to get my first car... I always loved 2013-15 Honda accord.... All my hope was on a friend who's been in car business for about 5 years now and knows his way around.

I went to where he is and we looked for a direct Belgium car, he did all the necessary test and assured me it was a good car... The person we were getting is from is also his business network of friends.

I made the whole payment without doing any test of my own because I know nothing.... We did drive test and everything and the car was okay.

On getting to my state I just decided to Google the Cars VIN number, I saw it online where it was in USA, turns out it seemed the car was used for Taxi in USA... While other than the headlight which was damaged in the VIN page it has no issue.

My concern now is the mileage... It has more than 200kmiles on it already... And via my small research such cars are bound to fail anytime.

I paid 13m for 2015 honda accord not to talk of transportation to my state which is 600-900km away from Lagos which te driver is saying he will take 700k to drive it to my state, not to talk of commission I paid my guy

My question now is was I scammed?

I've been depressed since last week

To me I don't think you have been scammed. People are using 200k miles cars and are very happy with it. Note that a lot of these so called "low mileage" Cars might actually have been tampered with. Just go on TikTok and read comments. You go shock. It's the maintainance history that matters.

Don't panick bro. It's still good

Congratulations
Re: Have I Been Scammed? by sexyto(m): 5:03pm On May 20
As long as you maintain it well you are good to go, most low mileage cars are either salvage or roll back odometer. Since it doesn't have a major accident rest your mind.
Use recommended oils and drive safely.
Re: Have I Been Scammed? by udede(m): 7:39pm On May 20
Yes bro, you were not scammed but you are about to scammed by the driver that want to collect 700k to drive it to your destination. Pay me less than half of that and I will drive the car to any where in Nigeria

Thanks for this.... I'm also concerned about the resale value.... Assuming I decide to swap or resell... Won't the buyers use the mileage as a way of down pricing it?

How can you say you don't know anything about a car you want to buy, you didn't even do a little research on your own even though you trusted your guy and a simple thing like what you're complaining didn't come to your mind when buying it.

No... As a matter of fact, they'll jump at your car and want to immediately buy it from you.... The secret? Maintenance... Maintain that car as your babe... You'll sell that car within a few days if as of when it's sold, it's still very clean... In and out.

One more thing. Next time you want to purchase a car... Still take a trusted, NON- COMPRISING mechanic to inspect the car again for you. Trust nobody... Not even your heart.. Happy purchase once again

Posting cooked up story in Cars talk for what exactly? What can your comment or whatever U have to say add to my Life?

How else was I going to research about the car when it's in the shop or buyers place I saw it... I already had in my mind 2013-15 Honda accord or Toyota camry

And you didn't had in mind what to check, so you can ask him about it.
It was when you paid the money and the car delivered to you, you remember to do research and got to know about the mileage of the car.
One of the most important thing you should have asked before Making payment.

It's alright.

You were not necessarily scammed, but you definitely should have been told the full history of the car before paying.
A lot of Nigerian-used “direct Belgium” cars were formerly US auction cars, and many of them were used for Uber/taxi abroad. That alone doesn’t automatically make the car bad. What matters most is:
* Engine condition
* Gear transmission condition
* Chassis integrity
* Maintenance history
* Whether mileage was tampered with

200k+ miles on a Honda Accord is high, yes, but Hondas are known to survive well beyond that if properly maintained. Some even cross 300k miles without major engine issues.
The bigger concern is whether:
1. The mileage shown to you before payment was accurate
2. Your guy knew the history and hid it from you
3. The car was overpriced for that condition/mileage

From your story, the car still drives fine, passed inspection, and only had minor accident history online. So don’t conclude immediately that the car will fail tomorrow.
For now:
* Calm down and stop assuming worst-case scenario
* Take the car to a very good Honda mechanic for full inspection
* Check transmission, engine compression, suspension, AC, and signs of flooding
* Confirm if the mileage on dashboard matches ECU records

If mechanically sound, just maintain it well and enjoy your first car. Depression over it won’t help now. Many people driving happily today bought cars with auction history without even knowing.
Your friend may have lacked transparency, but based on this story alone, I won’t call it a total scam yet.

My guy, you have nothing to fear since your vin check showed you the actual odometer and state of repairs which is minor. Give it about 5-7years of usage, you can now resale and get another. Ensure you dont use roadside mechanic and non standard oil for maintenance.

No you've not been scammed. In fact yoir friend did you a solid one. The mere fact that the car isn't an accidented or flood one and repackaged to you is a win. Plus even though the mileage is high it's better cos it was used as a taxi in a sane country and there's a very high probability that it's had a good service and maintenance record. Do enjoy your car and make sure to service regularly. That being said 700k to move a car from Lagos to 5 states away is very absurd.

Is Fuel money included in the cost of moving the car to the East or wherever? Even at that it is still expensive. You can go to any reputable transport company like GUO, GIGM, Libra etc. , you will definitely find a staff that is off duty or on leave that can drive the car for highest 150+200k excluding fuel expenses. Some may be officially rendering such services sef

Ensure you put security on it before handing it over.
Re: Have I Been Scammed? by sleekflow(m): 10:46am On May 21
I feel you got a good vehicle. My Avalon was at 190+ when I got it. And it is still running sharp with a noiseless engine. As someone rightly said, na maintenance be koko.

700k to move motor ?!
As how now ?
If you hold 200k, your motor go reach destination sharp.
Re: Have I Been Scammed? by Skillsnigeria: 10:49am On May 21
This is not a good business honestly.

This is what happened when someone is doing something for the first time without the knowledge of it.

There is nothing you can do about it now, you now have your own experience when buying another car.

How is being scammed even coming to your mind? Did they hide the mileage from you? If the car dealer never hid the mileage from you, you're just bothered over nothing.

Who says a 200k mileage car will fail? Anyways, enjoy your car.

700k to drive to where exactly? Na heaven? Why not get a driver with driving licence from your town to go bring it down to you if you cannot drive longs distance yourself. Price is ok but that delivery too much. Even 18 seater bus from Lagos to your location no go charge 700k

Taxi are always well maintained and pass most emission test. Sometimes it just insurance that made them sell. Once no Nigeria rewire or meco never touch am. Thank God and please use original abro coolant for radiator. Do original oil change. Check the break pads. No pressure wash radiator o. Make rewire no remove thermostat. Refill a.c gas.

If you can register it and have someone send you the plate number, it will reduce police and customs stress on the road because those people no dey use eye see Tokunbo. Customs will harass you and bring up all sorts of issues before finally extorting you shege, then police will be dictating to you how much to give them since you have money to buy a Tokunbo vehicle in this balablu economy.

Re: Have I Been Scammed? by NaijaHelper1(m): 11:09am On May 21
Why are you being charged 700k for transport? 600km from Lagos suggests it's probably going to the East for which 700k is excessive unless sth is wrong with the papers. I transport to the east all the time and I pay the driver 350k. Two refuels and custom tips along with driver charge of 100k. I guess with fuel price increase the amount will increase too but I don't expect that to rise by more than 70k extra. 200k miles is nothing for a well maintained Honda or Toyota. If it was used for Taxi and covered mostly highway miles, then you're in luck. If it's stop and go traffic, that's harder on vehicles so it may be difficult to assess if it was a good buy without having this information.
